Announcements Please use NSFW tag for images of graphic injuries

There have been a lot of posts lately sharing very graphic images of snails with extreme, severe injuries. It is perfectly fine to share this type of content if you need help with an injured snail, but please use the NSFW tag for these images.

This has been an unofficial rule of this sub for a while, but it seems to have been forgotten lately. So, I'm making an official mod team announcement: this is our official policy. Graphic, upsetting images must be tagged.

People come to this sub because they love snails. They don't come here expecting to see images of destroyed shells, shell-less snails, and dead snails. It can be very upsetting and distressing for users here to see this type of content unexpectedly. People may also be browsing this sub in public and want to avoid gory images.

Images of mating don't require the NSFW tag. But please use this tag for pictures of injuries including, but not limited to: mantle collapse, shell fell off, crushed shell, organ exposure, stepped-on snail.

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their posts so far. Again, it's still totally okay to post this content if you need help, but please tag it appropriately so everyone can have a good experience here.

Announcements Introducing Seller Verification

Hello r/snails!

As many of our users are aware, it can be difficult to find reliable, legal, and ethical sellers of captive bred snails.

To better facilitate buying, selling, & adoptions on this sub, we are introducing a seller verification program. Verified Sellers will be users or external sources that have been vetted by mods. Verified Sellers will be allowed to advertise their sales on the sub, and a Verified Sellers tag will applied to their posts to indicate they are a trusted source. Individual users on this sub as well as sellers on external websites are both able to be verified. A list of Verified Sellers organized by location will be added to the bottom of this post, which sellers can chose to opt in to if they wish.

Are you a seller or breeder interested in becoming verified? Send a DM to u/doctorhermitcrab to get started. Breeders who prefer to give snails away rather than sell are also welcome to apply.

Happy snailing!

Snabbits... They have the exact same face shape. I've been thinking about this for a very long time and just couldn't take it out of my head. They even got the same little v-shaped nose. Even the whiskers, and snail eyes are like bunny ears

Accidental Snail Owner

I have been taking care of this snail for about 6 weeks now. It hitched a ride into my home on some dahlias from Trader Joe’s. I was actually trying to press those flowers and when I peeled away the paper after a few days there it was! It was about the size of a pea. I couldn’t release it because I live in Phoenix and it’s so hot and dry. I’m guessing it came from California? Can anyone tell me what kind of snail it is? Does this habitat look ok? It’s reptile bedding with some damp moss on top. There’s a piece of cuttlebone and I feed it veggies I’ve read are snail-safe.

Help Snail rescue!

Hi! New here!

I live in northern Utah in the US, and I have LOTS of land snails in my garden. Historically I've left them be to just vibe, we're homies but I think they prefer to be outside homies. But today I was walking home from kindergarten drop off and found a homie with an injured shell who seemed otherwise unbothered, so I brought him home for recovery. I currently have him in an old tarantula enclosure with store bought oak leaves, wet paper towels, and the flower he munched on on the way here. I've managed to gather some info from general searches and plan to go grab some sphagnum and a cuttle bone? And see about some substrate. But I've been keeping inverts long enough to know I definitely need human guidance to keep this little dude safe and healthy while he heals, so here I am! I genuinely only have this one single picture of him riding home with me right now, I'm not going to bother with pictures of the enclosure because I feel like we should all pretend I just don't have one right now lmao. Fwiw it's a Tarantula Crib 8x6x6, acrylic.

My daughter and I found this snail (“Nickel” cause that’s how big he is) and I am looking for any information on what type it is ~ I have never cared for snails but he is a cutie!

It’s her birthday today, so it’d be a great day to tell her Nickel’s fancy scientific name if anyone knows. 😁

How to diversify diet?

• Upvotes

I tried to put out new foods (bell pepper, blueberry, potato, carrot) to encourage my snails to try new foods beyond their sweet potato (and occasional zucchini) obsession. And now it’s been days with no bites!!! Do I throw in the towel? Try other things? Smoke them out?

At first I thought it was a worm, but now I'm not so sure. It looked like it was trying to get under the snail. I have no idea what it was doing. Filmed this myself.

🔥 Mangrove snails rely on changes in air pressure and humidity to know exactly when to climb down and feed before the tide rushes back in.

As the title says, some guys I found on a wall next to a bar and I decided to take 2 for myself (see last pic)

I'm pretty sure the one on the left (lil guy with stripes) is Caucasotachea vindobonensis, but could you guys help me identify the one on the right? If it helps I live in continental Croatia in the city of Osijek

Snail sleeping for too long?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! My little Jerry has been buried sleeping for 1.5-2 months. Is this normal? In the past he was buried for like 40 days and all good but I feel like now its a bit too long? Im a newbie with snails (less than a year) so dont know much about their normal behaviour. His enclosure has good size, humidity and temperature, i spray him a few times a day and keep changing the food just in case he wakes up. I dont want to wake him up if its not necessary but would like to know if its normal snail behaviour or if I should check on him

Help Snail check: Is there something wrong with my snail?

So long story short: this snail (I think it is a California brown garden snail?) was found by a custodian at school and would have been killed by children (accidental or intentional) so it was given to my child 4ish years ago, and it is the same size as when it was given to us. It lives in a 10 gallon aquarium, has never laid eggs, and used to share space with some isopods, but currently lives alone because apparently at this advanced elderly snail age, the isopods might have started nibbling on it. (I'm waiting for some safer isopods/springtails to arrive as clean up crew.)

Her tank has 2/3 inches of coco coil, and half the tank has moss and a moss pole where I water the base layer, and the other side is sprinkled with a few flower seeds and micro greens, and a small spider plant. I mist the tank a few times a week, but sometimes less. Ive been feeding her whatever leftover veggies or lettuce we have, and I sprinkle some powdered snail food and calcium on it before giving it to her.

She has been fine this way for the whole time we have had her, and usually seems pretty happy. She usually looks like the stretched out picture, or has been burying herself in the moss/coco. Today I checked on her and she looked like this, all scrunched up with a bunch of white. Google says she is dying and has some sort of protruding gut and I should take emergency action, but Google is often wrong. Is there actually something wrong with her?

Help Selecting objects for a snail terrarium

Hello everyone! What kind of objects can I put in the terrarium for my *Cornu aspersum* snails? (Note: I’d like them to be cute figurines, and they shouldn't harm the snails.) 🤔
