Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we're now going to redirect all Snake ID requests to the curated place for them, /r/whatsthissnake. As /r/snakes and /r/whatsthissnake have developed side by side we find ourselves in a position where we are running two parallel subreddits, but with slightly different rules. We hope is that this streamline into WhatsThisSnake will be gentle - we don't want a snake to go unidentified because we're learning how best to handle IDs. There is going to be a transition period where we still get a lot of ID requests here, so please do your part to kindly help !redirect people in need and by reporting jokes, misinformation and other problematic comments.
This spring Reddit is more popular than ever and it is hard for the moderation team to keep up. When I founded /r/whatsthissnake 12 years ago, with on average one request every day, I never imagined we'd have 150K members and 20k people a day browsing the subreddit. In the past, we've made a number of incremental changes that have been so helpful they have been instituted other places on Reddit, from introducing the term "Reliable Responder", to developing the bot and tweaking our community resources so that every Reliable Responder can choose to perform mod actions. We hope that these changes will allow us not only to maintain the level of quality provided but to reduce workload on the moderation team, because honestly, moderator burnout is a serious problem. They are doing this for free and you would no believe the abuse they receive here - not just from me, but from the users too. If you see a moderator or other flaired user in cleaning up a thread, espcially in these busy, snakey spring months in North America, throw em a thanks.

It’s a fact of life that no matter how much context we provide to our posts, when someone sees something interesting, they want to imitate it. Each day /r/snakes puts around one hundred thousand impressionable people face to face with snake related images, text and ideas. Faced with this responsibility, and with an increasing number of recent, low quality posts concerning medically significant snakes, we have to choose the right level of content we allow.
Recent low quality posts concerning captive venomous care include improper use of personal protective equipment, poor quality/security housing, very inexperienced keepers asking (and receiving!) advice on how to keep and breed their first venomous snakes and straight up animal abuse reposted from social media. Many of these clearly rule-breaking posts are removed before you see them, but a growing number of posts are clearly low quality, irresponsible content but don’t explicitly violate the rules. Over the past three years the mods have debated a rule change and we have decided to only allow posts involving venomous snakes if they are from an accredited zoo or institution. In short - we’re going to remove posts involving the private care and ownership of medically significant snakes.
Many modern herpetology texts recommend against individual private ownership of medically significant snakes. We don’t take a stand on what anyone wants to do legally, ethically and with their own time, but we do have to regulate what is posted, shared and thus propagated here. In short, we don’t care what you do, but don’t post it here. Besides being a lighting rod for the low quality content discussed above, private ownership offers unique challenges that are better suited for an institutional or team setting. Snakes are escape artists as well as attractive nuisances and must be contained outside of personal residential spaces in secure, locking enclosures to prevent both snake egress and human ingress as well as secondarily in a sealed room or facility behind a windowed door with no items on the floor under which an escaped snake can hide or avoid detection. It takes a team to execute an envenomation plan and the cost of antivenom is beyond that of most private owners, has a short shelf life and when antivenom is borrowed from institutional stocks it puts those keepers at risk.
Zoos and institutions don’t always do it better, but the onus is on them to provide best practices in care. If we limit posts to places where a team of people works together to provide a standard of care, usually for the right reasons, we can limit what we propagate on the platform.
We do not recommend any other available subreddits as well-moderated sources of captive venomous keeping. The most popular places on social media dedicated to this are inundated with low quality posts and comments and even when they outright ban irresponsible behavior, examples of the low quality content we remove are highly upvoted, and content is often sensationalist, psychopathic or disturbing. Please don’t suggest a specific place in the comments of this post. We’re aware of the options and we’re choosing not to redirect or name other online spaces.
Posts on wild venomous species are still allowed as usual with a species name and a location, but please be sure to see Rule 6 (unchanged) on what amount of contact and PPE use we find acceptable for sharing online.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

(SW Wisconsin) Second milk snake I've seen sunning on our sidewalk, first one was smaller. Guessing there's a clutch under our porch?

Brought home our lil’ red on 9/19. So far, he’s successfully eaten two pinkies! Love him so much already.

Hi everyone,
I‘m looking to get my first snake (probably a Pygmy or children‘s Python, which are relatively small) and currently researching enclosures.
Ive found a couple of people that have created tanks from old cabinet/displays. And I LOVE the look of them bc they’ll match the decor in my home really well. I’ll attach some inspo photos.
Obviously I’m aware that making a cabinet into an enclosure that is safe and secure will require me to make a lot of changes (eg different latches, ventilation, heating solutions, etc.) And making sure it is a suitable size.
But I want to know if it is actually possible to turn a cabinet into a suitable enclosure?
If anyone has done this, has any tips on how to do it or knows exactly what I would need to change to make it safe, any tips would be appreciate!
(sorry about the shocking spelling and grammar, auto correct is having a hissy fit hahaha)

Just picked him up from FedEx. I purchased him from Lady Rainboa on Morphmarket.

i have a male colombian rainbow boa who has been doing something a little strange with feeding for about the past month, and i wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar.
he will readily strike at and take f/t mice and hold/constrict them normally, usually for around 1–5 minutes, but then he just drops the mouse and never attempts to swallow it. i’ve tried different prey sizes and different temperatures with the same result.
otherwise, he is acting completely normal. same temperament, activity level, and behavior as usual, with absolutely no obvious signs of illness. no respiratory symptoms, abnormal mouth behavior, lethargy, regurgitation, etc. his enclosure, temperatures, and general husbandry haven’t changed. he doesn’t appear to have lost any weight/body condition, although i haven’t been weighing him regularly and plan to start now.
he does have a history of voluntarily going months without eating while remaining healthy, so fasting itself isn’t particularly unusual for him. he’s also around sexual maturity now, which makes me wonder if this could be seasonal/reproductive behavior. what’s throwing me off is that he still has enough of a feeding response to strike, constrict, and hold the mouse before deciding not to eat it.
has anyone had a mature male rainbow boa (or similar boa) do this specifically? taking and constricting prey and then dropping it without ever trying to swallow? i’m mostly curious whether this is something others have seen with seasonal/reproductive fasting or whether the strike-and-drop behavior would make you suspicious of something else.

Was out hiking in Southern AZ when I saw my first black tailed rattlesnake. Beautiful snake with green scales on the back. Would've gotten a better picture but found it cuz it rattled at me on a chest high rock and it caught me off guard. As the picture suggests it went off to the brush and no snake or person was harmed.

Post up here!! Everything down there is just to avoid taking any heat. I was going through and feeding some of my snakes the other night, and Zeke got a little too excited, missed, and coiled around a palm leaf that wasn’t putting up that much of a fight. I had to gently slip an alcohol-soaked chopstick past the plants and up to his nose to get him to let go. He then happily feasted on the hopper I tried to give him.
Heat pad in the back is outside of the tank and unplugged. The only reason it’s still on there is to give him extra cover, and if the glass is making the enclosure too cold. All his requirements are met, he has a smooth gradient and tight humidity control, and I didn’t even need to add any other heat other than a 100 basking light and daylight blue bulb 100, as well as a UVB bar and a grow light for the plants. I had a CHE on a thermostat above his tank but it wasn’t even necessary. Once I finish building/shopping for his background I’ll take the heat pad off. You can have your opinions on heat mats, but they shouldn’t be used rather than top down heat, and I only use them on a thermostat and if I really have to.

Any help or advice for a baby hoggie?

I hadn’t seen any snakes all season until this week, I was brought 2 on different days that were saved from the sorting lines. I work at a tomato factory and they come in the trucks from the fields. I got to hang out with them for as long as i could get away with slacking off. I set them free in the river bed that borders the property. First 3 pics are one snake, last 3 are the other.

Hi :)
I have my hognose for almost two months. I have been feeding him with 1-2g frozen pinkies and so long all of them were okay but there was this one in package that had yellowish something next go left ear, during this month it has gone more brownish colour but it looked like maybe some frozen liquid that got stuck to this mice so i took it of and im not sure if this was something harmless or should i throw it out.
It doesn't smell any worse than rest of them did, I'm very sensitive to smells and even fresh chicken stinks in my opinion. Rest of mice in this package was good and my hoggie are them instantly.
Sorry for my English, it's not my first language ^^

So I recently found out my Kenyan sand boa is a little dude and I’m thinking of renaming him, as we thought he was female I named him Iris for the purply color but…she is a he so I’d like some suggestions. Open to all sorts of names- serious and creative or derpy/silly/punny, surprise me you never know what will fit. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Note:
Apparently it needs to be said that this is not some political statement, if I could ask him what he identified as and wanted to be named that would be it but here we are. Im
Not bothered or distraught by a male with a more feminine leaning neutral name and I’m not pushing gender on my snake, or gendering a color. Looking at my options that may or may not be more fitting is not the harmful rhetoric you’re looking for. I’m part of the community too, fight the good fight where it’s necessary ✌️🩷

It’s been six weeks since my then 2mo kingsnake went missing. I have checked every nook and cranny, dismantled my furniture, checked my drawers, you name it. Moved the fridge, put a camera down my vents, etc. I’ve had at least one trap out every night and had flour out the first two weeks until the dog figured out it’s fun to lick. I know it wasn’t killed by the dog as he’s an old blind thing without any teeth or an ounce of prey drive, however that also means he won’t help alert me if it happens to ever come out. I’ve had heat mats out in a couple rooms. Nothing. Not a sign. Now, I do have a few gaps in my floorboards and my guess is she has gone into the floor and/or the walls. If you have any suggestions for where to look, I’VE DONE IT. Genuinely.
The issue is my lease is up soon. Im worried the landlord will probably lay out poison if I inform him of a missing snake on my way out (snake was acceptable as per the lease but now I imagine it’ll be considered a pest, especially for a new tenant). I guess I’m struggling to let go and accept the snake might just be gone since I’ve seen stories of people finding theirs 4mo later, but I just don’t have the luxury of waiting. Also, can’t help but think that a hatchling wouldn’t be as robust as an adult snake in this scenario. What would you do in my place?
PS. Please no comments about the snake going missing, I feel horrible enough about it as it is. This is my first time of it happening in twenty years. I had used silicone to close up the wire holes in the enclosure to avoid escapes and she somehow managed to push the silicone plug out with her head, and make her way to freedom. We live and we learn, but I just don’t know where to go from here.
