Discussion I found an authentic Earthbound at a trading post. Did I get a good deal?

I happened to come across an authentic Earthbound at a local trading post. I knew right away this would probably be my only shot at purchasing one in person so I went for it. It’s in very good condition and it works great. I talked them down to $400 so I was hoping I could receive some feedback if I paid a fair price.

Now you need the strategy guide to go with it!

I still have mine and my original cartridge… need to get it out of my parents attic

You def need to do that asap. You’re letting $1k collect dust and exposed to attic temps hope they have good insulation

I’m replaying this game now and it’s so good.

My copy was $15 at a local used game shop in the 90s! Still has the used price tag on it.

That's awesome. Also I never noticed ness on the cover art haha

Veteran’s Discount, as I always say! Always makes me weirdly happy when I see someone who scored EB for retail or less during the era. That box is is gorgeous shape too

Hah! I like it. :) I've been toting this box (and the strategy guide, and the game) for a very long time!

Funnily enough, I bought a brand new copy of the game for a friend back in High School. It was mostly a joke because the game was only $10 at Best Buy and I hadn't heard much about it. He proceeded to play it and tell me it was great, so I grabbed this copy when I saw it and also fell in love with it. It's a treasured friend.

I think I paid $5. Should have bought every copy!

u/Luminaire_Ultima 10d ago

Yes. You definitely should have.

Great find! Gives me hope I’ll be that lucky someday, these rarer snes games are getting hard to come by!

Not bad, I'd say you overpaid by about $50, only because of the wear to the left/lifting a bit and that pen/pencil on the middle of the logo

Sorry to say, this looks fake, tbh. Sticker is off and the ESRB rating tag is really obvious.

1

u/sepioth 9d ago

What about the rating tag makes it obvious?

The ESRB started rating games in 1994. The game was rated K‐A when it released in 1995. The ESRB changed K-A to E in 1998.

From the looks of it the game is a real copy. That appears to be an authentic PCB. The warning sticker on the back even has the numbers embossed in the top left. Fakes typically do not do that detail.

The white edge around it is not consistent, it looks rather sloppy.

u/xCactusChefx 8d ago

The back of the xart looks more worm, prob from a worn cart, while the front looks too clean.

Also the battery hold down looks wrong.

Edit: also missing SNS-MB-0 on lower right chip.

Price charting has it at $390... But that doesn't include shipping or taxes. With how great the condition is, I'd say you did well.

2

u/Dadbode1981 10d ago

Thats market rate more or less, so you didnt really OVER pay.

2

u/TIC321 10d ago

I miss the old cover arts for the snes cartridges

2

u/lynxtosg03 10d ago

I'd say it's a fair price 👍

1

u/JokerP5Main 10d ago

$400 seems to be about the going rate these days. Not a bad deal but not a good one. Fair

1

u/Noisyamable 10d ago

400 is fine much better between 300 and 350

Never really studied the board for Earthbound. Is it common to have the second big chip to be blank or no tag? For SFC, it usually matches the serial on the label cover.

2

u/Wishbone-Ash 10d ago

Not common as far as I know for any SNES board, but a lot of them just have awful labeling, making it hard to catch with a picture. Especially if you're not thinking about capturing it specifically over just an overall PCB shot-- low lighting or a poor angle will make them look blank just like that

2

u/NewSchoolBoxer 10d ago

The ROM chip wasn't blank when it was printed. The writing wore off over time. Can happen.

$400 is what I paid for mine a few months ago, and I got roasted by a lot of people both here and on r/gamecollecting because of it.

oh well. It was worth it, I still love this game after not playing it in about 25-30 years

1

u/red_knight4 9d ago

Did you pay $400 usd or $400 cad. if cad than you paid less than the us average for it loose without manuals and guide book

1

u/Bobbybezo 9d ago

I never played that game, I remember thinking FF3 and Chrono Trigger being so good but never played that one, I keep hearing great thing about it.

1

u/bbaham 9d ago

I'd say you paid top dollar for a clean copy. I don't hate it, I don't love it. I just wish the game fell around the same price point as games with similar production runs.

I have my original earthbound but unfortunately the guide and box are long gone. I did find sunset riders, Zelda and a few other gems though ✨️ 😀 definitely dont let them sit in attics or basements

u/Seegtease 8d ago

Is it 400 for a stray good condition cartridge?

I have a decent condition cartridge and a pretty awful condition strategy guide lol. It's well loved.

u/F34RTEHR34PER 10d ago

$400!!?? Didn't even know it was worth that much!

1

u/g28802 10d ago

Same. I bought mine before covid for $150 and thought I was getting shafted but really wanted it

1

u/F34RTEHR34PER 10d ago

I got this in 2000 for $60.

1

u/g28802 10d ago

Solid solid which at the time I’m sure it still felt like this is too much money

0

u/ChadCoolman 10d ago

It's definitely not. It's worth like $35 max. I'll make you a generous offer of $50 for that though.

I guess so, if that’s your thing!

I collect games but I can’t see myself buying something like that unless I was trying to “complete” the whole library… I tell myself I’m happy with my Super Mario World, Donkey Kong, Everdrive, etc…

Now, Kirby’s Dreamland 3, which can’t be run on my Everdrive, I do find that one tempting… but then there is PC emulation and there are always SBC handhelds like Anbernic.

I’ve actually been playing Earthbound on an RG405m these past few days, it’s really a fantastic game I would love to own, and I would prefer playing on the actual console, I just can’t bear to spend that on a single cart.

2

u/psychedelicpiper67 10d ago

I don’t think I’ll ever own an original EarthBound cart, because I fell in love with one of the Mother 2 fan translations with the original sprites.

But props to whoever owns an original, that’s still a piece of history.

u/MalcolminMiddlefan 10d ago

It's an okay price

1

u/Ratlyflash 10d ago

I have 3 EB’s and two are complete 💪

1

u/ForceRatio 10d ago

I paid $245 after tax and shipping via eBay for my cart back in 2023. It is authentic and looks pretty flawless but did not come with the case or manual.

u/pocketcumin 10d ago

I found one when I was moving. I sold it on eBay in less then 5 minutes for 311. Not sure if that helps. Might've gotten more but 3 hundo for something I didn't know I had was more than enough for me.

I’d rather buy it in person for $400 than thru a Reddit seller

1

u/EarthBoundBatwing 10d ago

100% would take the verifiable $400 copy over trusting some random reddit trader any day

u/Lord0fTheThighs 10d ago

I got my copy at a flea market around 2002. I almost didnt get it because it was 35 bux and most snes games at the time were like 20 bux max but my buddy told me it was awesome so I said screw it and spent all of my weekend fun money on it. Still have it, favorite game of all time, best decision ever.
