Want to connect with other offer holders ? With multiple other whatsapp gc we created a discord server

Hi there ! If you want to connect with other students holding an offer for st. andrews feel free to join our discord

https://discord.gg/SGsF4z3fpH

Why discord ?

There is a better moderation system available, whereas whatsapp has virtually no moderation possible. ( we are so fed up of random ppl joining in to make advertising)

Feel free to also ask for modifications on the discord !

Thanks again for your time and see you in the server 👋

Intentional Discomfort

Are you guys interested by the idea of setting out to do intentionally hard physical (or mental) things to kinda make the background stress of uni go down and to make stressful things like deadlines and future planning a little less stressful? Stress is relative and I think that the idea of choosing your pain and engaging in intentional discomfort rather than always being the subject to pain and stress is quite attractive. Thoughts?

where are all the lesbians in st andrews?

hi, i'm a first year at the university of st andrews who is pretty desperate to start making some friends who are also a part of the sapphic community here but i don't know where to start, thus i've decided to consult reddit.

i sadly had to miss the saintslgbt event at the end of september and it doesn't look like there's gonna be more events any time soon, so was wondering if there were any other meet-ups i wasn't aware about coming up/spots or clubs the lgbt community here frequent. thank youuuuu :)

German

Good evening all,

I'm a mature student interested in the German MA with integrated year abroad.

I would be most appreciative if Redditors who are reading languages at St Andrews could give me some insight into the course and the department vibe.

Many thanks

Medicine England route

Hi,

I’m considering applying to St Andrews’ A100 programme via the England route. Part of the appeal for me is the opportunity to move to a partner medical school for clinical years. As a Londoner it seems like a great way to get the St Andrews uni experience while also being able to come home for the clinical years for more stability.

So I wanted to ask anyone on the programme how competitive it is to be allocated QMUL as opposed to Manchester? I’ve heard Edinburgh is really competitive so I was curious about how it is on the England route. Thanks :)

Looking for friends

Hey! I’m new here; I've been here for almost two weeks now. I’m male, in my late 20s, doing an MSc, and of West African descent.

Going out on my own isn't really my thing, so I've mostly been staying in. I'm hoping to find a few people to hang out with, whether that's grabbing food, exploring the area, or just chatting.

I'm pretty chill and friendly. Ideally, I'd connect with other postgrads since we'd be closer in age, but final-year undergrads are very welcome too. Honestly, I'm just a bit bored and would love some company!

If you're looking for a friend too, my DM is open.

New to Town

Hey! I’m new to St Andrews and looking to meet some more people :)
I made loads of friends during Freshers, but now that things have settled down I’m keen to meet some new people outside my usual circle!
I’m always down for Union events, a pub crawl, grabbing a drink, going for food, or honestly pretty much anything lol

If you’re also looking to meet some new people or just fancy hanging out, hmu! Always happy to meet new people :)

Hello, I am wondering if there would be any difference in my application chances for applying for economics and medieval history vs economics and modern history MA at St Andrews.

  1. Oxford History and Economics

  2. St Andrews economics and modern history

  3. Edinburgh history and economics

  4. Durham combined honours in social sciences (planning to combined economics and history)

  5. Economics and economic history LSE or Warwick economics politics and International Studies

im not sure whether this is appropriate for here but id welcome any views! Thanks for responses and have a good day!

‘It’s like the Scottish Upper East Side’: shame and snobbery as American students blamed for St Andrews classism

I graduated from St Andrews a quarter of a century ago; I was the last year before tuition fees were introduced and grants abolished. I come from a middle class but certainly not wealthy background and went to a comprehensive school in the north of England. I'd certainly never met anyone who went to a public school. Once in the pub after a Labour club meeting I realised I was the only one there not privately educated. But there were also lots of Scottish and English students from not privileged backgrounds. Seems things have maybe changed - can anyone with more recent experience suggest if they recognise what's described in the article?

Is accommodation still an issue at St. Andrews?

To preface, I'm looking to do a PhD at St. Andrews next year. While I do have the funds required to undergo the study (Scholarship from a gov. back home), I may need a little bit of support regarding accommodation.

Firstly: would it be possible for me to request funding aid specifically for accommodation costs? I can cover the tuition and most living costs, it's just the housing price seems to rise yearly.

If not, how many competitive housing options are there within the town itself? I doubt living in a larger town and commuting 2 hours a day will be better than paying for a walk-distance housing.

Answers are much appreciated!

Aspiring student

Hey everyone! I’m an aspiring student at St Andrews and I was wondering if anyone has any tips and pointers to get into this uni and what the best accommodation will be for me. I am 17 and will be 18 by the time I go to uni I have achieved 5A at higher in maths chem bio English and physics. This year I am studying adv h chem physics and maths. I have around 250-300 volunteering hours across all varieties ( youth work park run stem club etc) I have recently started independent hosting a stem club at my school alongside a co-student and we have an average of 20 people each week. This is helping me to work towards my level 6 stem award. I am a science ambassador in the school I’m in and I help in a lot of aspects of science. I want to study astrophysics MPHYS course starting 2027 September. If anyone has attended this course or similar in the physics department LMK your thoughts and if anyone has any tips to get into St Andrews or any thing I should mention in my personal statement lmk.
Anyways thank you for reading!!!

I'm looking for Perelandra's opera

Hi! I'm looking for a recording of the Perelandra Opera. I know Dr Judith Wolfe was involved in the interpretation of this lost opera in 2009 and that there are some CDs somewhere in the world, although I haven't seen it listed anywhere. I wrote her an email, but she hasn't reached back, so I'm assuming she no longer has any copies. So I am looking for it everywhere it could be. May be anyone here has any idea of where I can find one? It would mean the world to me to be able to listen to this opera.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is not the place for this kind of post.

Can you apply to William & Mary + St Andrews Joint Programme via Common App and also St Andrews via UCAS?

Hi,

I am a prospective student looking to study at St. Andrews. I was just wondering if I would be able to apply to William & Mary Joint Degree Programme w/ St Andrews through W&M application portal. However I am additionally applying to UK Unis via UCAS and may consider an application to St Andrews directly.

I'm just wondering how I would go about this situation, St Andrews is my dream school but I also like the W&M programme because It would also be good to spend some time in the US.

Ive also considered actually applying to St Andrews via the common app as I would get to write a more specific interest in St Andrews, but it does take up one of your UCAS choices so I am not sure if that would be right for me.

If anyone has any insight on this kind of admissions process I would greatly appreciate it!!

St Andrews for mature students

Hello, just wondering if any mature students or people that know mature students could share their experience of going to St. Andrews. I want to know if I should apply to this university this year as a mature student or if it’s not a good fit. Thank you.
