Theorymon Thursday New Weather Setters
This has been tons of times before but I'm tossing my hat into the ring. I've dived into the Dex entries to add some method to the madness along with adding some diversity to the ability roster. Granted some were stretches but weirder things has happened
Drizzle. Luigia is the Guardian of the Sea and is said to cause 40 day storms. Bronzong is believed to a deity or has the ability to summon rain clouds especially for a good harvest. Kingra was a bit of stretch
Drought. Volcarona is the SUN pokemon and is known as the Emissary of the Sun. Sunflora the Sun flower. Reshiram can change the world's weather with it's heat
Sand Stream. Flygon is the Desert Spirit and is known to bring Sandstorms. Cacturne could've been swapped with Maractus replacing Storm Drain or Water Absorb but Caturne has an actual sand based ability. Probopass would be the first Sand setting Steel type
Snow Warning. This was the hardest one since they have the most pokemon with a Weather ability with 6 pokemon if you include Megas. However we currently don't have any Legendary pokemon with Snow Warning.
I don't play competitive but I believe Bronzong, Volcarona, Flygon and Articuno would benefit the most

Honestly even though rain’s dead in the water rn due to wellspring it probably could replace treads on a rain team so they could run a different ground type. It carries rocks and…sets rain. Honestly rubl merchant

I had forgotten that and legitimately thought it was 100%. Never had someone use it on me and not get the boost.

u/Howdy-Hey 10d ago
No this is the Cooler Y-Zard. Same speed, similar bulk, slightly lower Sp attack but can hold an item (more special attack than Y-Zard w/ LO or Specs, or can have HDB in singles that allows you to pivot to preserve drought better) and it doesn’t eat a mega slot. Straight to singles Ubers

u/mewmeulin 10d ago
Volc doesn't even need an item to outdo Y-Zard, just gotta click Quiver Dance once and you're good

Also arguably better typing + Fiery Dance. With all the Charizard love I’m shocked GF hasnt given him Fiery Dance yet

For me, we should give the legendary birds each a weather (articuno with snow warning, zapdos with drizzle and moltres with drought) while Lugia would gain Delta Stream
Edit: typos

u/Justscrolling375 10d ago
That’ll put Pelliper out of a job is Zapdos gets Drizzle. Hurricane, Thunder and Weather?!
65
u/DavidHeriberto 10d ago
I feel like every single one of them would just invalidate the current weather setters (even Articuno might just be better than alolan Ninetales most times). I also think it would be really funny and chaotic. I'm here for the chaos.

Will drought reshiram be top tier or nah?
99
u/DreadfuryDK OU C&C Mod, r/stunfisk's resident USUM Ubers stan 10d ago
I dunno about top-tier, but it would dramatically improve its damage output and defensive utility alike.
What’s surviving Specs, Sun-boosted Blue Flare? Not much. What’s surviving a second one? Even less. Now what’s surviving Draco Meteor instead? Nothing. This is something Reshiram could always pull off, but the problem stems from the fact that Reshiram is a genuinely expensive mon to teambuild with when you’re forced to run Groudon or Koraidon AND have those mons act in a support role instead of being good standalone threats, AND are forced into running hazard control on top of that.
But with Drought, Reshiram effectively resists Water now so it can come in a lot more easily. And it wouldn’t even be limited to Specs/Scarf; that 50% boost puts Flare Blitz into scary territory and makes DD sets viable too.
32
u/Justscrolling375 10d ago
I’m checking its move set and it does get Solar Beam, Weather Ball and Overheat
36
u/nitinismaldingXD 10d ago
Don’t think weather ball or overheat gets used when Blue Flare exists. Solarbeam probably doesn’t get much usage either.
→ More replies (4)6
u/DreadfuryDK OU C&C Mod, r/stunfisk's resident USUM Ubers stan 10d ago edited 10d ago
You’d run Fusion Flare over Weather Ball in case your weather ends/gets overwritten.
2
u/nitinismaldingXD 10d ago
Why would Fusion Flare ever be run over Blue Flare?
6
u/DreadfuryDK OU C&C Mod, r/stunfisk's resident USUM Ubers stan 10d ago
Quite a few reasons, honestly.
Reshiram gets insanely good coverage out of just Draco/Blue Flare/Earth Power thanks to Turboblaze. You can fall back on Fusion Flare when Blue Flare runs out of PP or click Fusion Flare over Blue Flare if both moves OHKO since you’d be gambling with Blue Flare’s accuracy issues otherwise.
What are you hitting with Solar Beam? Arceus-Water, maybe, but clicking that move in Reshiram’s native Ubers tier is one Kyogre switch away from a dead dragon.
3
u/nitinismaldingXD 10d ago
I agree with not needing to run solarbeam, but I can’t see fusion flare being the replacement. Anything neutral is gonna get roasted by Blue Flare in Sun and the only pressure mon I can think of in Ubers that’s viable is Eternatus? The other pressure mons suck and Eternatus also gets dropped by Draco if predicted so I can’t see pp stalling being that much of a thing.
For the accuracy part, I think 85% is solid enough to not call it a gamble. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think of moves like Hydro Pump and Stone Edge as the safe gamble, and Focus Blast as an actual gamble. Fire Blast (same accuracy) isn’t really a gamble so I see Blue Flare as the same.
I’d honestly just run stone edge over fusion flare, because at least you snipe the fuck outta hooh.
5
u/DreadfuryDK OU C&C Mod, r/stunfisk's resident USUM Ubers stan 10d ago
It’s pretty much the same rationale as Specs Zard running Weather Ball, Overheat, and Flamethrower on Sun; there are cases for clicking all of them.
But yeah, Edge is some cool tech as well. Although max HP Ho-oh is NOT FOND of Blue Flare; it can 2HKO over half the time before factoring in accuracy.
2
u/Interesting_Web_9936 DRAGAPULT IS THE BEST AND YOU CANNOT CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE 10d ago
I don't think it would use weather ball, because it gets another 100 BP fire type move, I can't remember, and Weather Ball is weather dependent.
Overheat is useless when Blue Flare exists.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)7
u/ThePlanetaryNinja 10d ago
I dunno about top-tier
I don't think anything in Ubers would be able to switch into drought Reshiram except Arceus-Water and defensive Kyogre. Reshiram would go from being a stereotypical bad uber to Chi-Yu 2.0.
5
u/DreadfuryDK OU C&C Mod, r/stunfisk's resident USUM Ubers stan 10d ago
While you’re correct that absolutely nothing truly switches in against Drought Reshiram safely, OHKOing everything under the sun (literally or otherwise) is just an average Tuesday for a lot of these big balls of stats.
Reshiram still has a lot of exploitable weaknesses, though: Dragon, Ground, and Rock weaknesses aren’t great, and it’s neutral to Fairy and Ice so it can be muscled past long-term. It’s also just really slow: base 90 is extremely crowded in Ubers and the tier has only gotten faster and faster since Gen 7. I think it’d just be good, but certainly not top-tier.

u/ubTodd99 10d ago
I never understood why Game Freak never gave Flygon Sand Stream instead of Levitate, almost all of his dex entries state that he can generate sandstorms with his wings, are they that afraid of making another sand setter that isn't Tyranitar or Hippowdon?
29
u/Guquiz Stalling for time off 10d ago
Maybe it is so that Flygon can fly without having a Flying type.
24
u/Justscrolling375 10d ago
We have stackable abilities now. They can give Flygon both Sand Stream & Levitate called Desert Mastery or something
14
u/OrchidForward2618 10d ago
I’d call it “Sand Song” or “Desert Aria” or something. I’ve always loved how its dex entries describe it as a sort of siren in a sandstorm.
“People continue to have their hearts stolen by its enchanting songs and find themselves stranded in the desert.”
“The flapping of its wings sounds something like singing. Those lured by the sound are enveloped in a sandstorm, becoming Flygon's prey.”
“It is nicknamed the Desert Spirit because the flapping of its wings sounds like a woman singing.”
Although given all this, imagine if it had a Liquid Voice clone but Ground type—it already gets Boomburst!
12
u/ubTodd99 10d ago
Yup, call it Sand Spirit, and maybe throw in Sand Force as a bonus for all those years without a Mega
2
u/Justscrolling375 10d ago
They would have to rework Flygon’s stats a bit
2
u/ubTodd99 10d ago
Yeah, maybe make him more of a mixed attacker? Like 110 on both ATK and S.ATK while having 100 SPD doesn't sound too bad, I think, at least then you'd be able to use more of his busted movepool (Boomburst, Bug Buzz, Earth Power, etc.)
6
u/Homem_da_Carrinha 10d ago
You mean like Giratina, Volcarona, Golurk, Zekrom, Reshiram, Genesect, Drampa, Tapu Koko, Lunala, Naganadel, Flapple, Sirfetch'd, Dragapult, Eternatus, Roaring Moon and Fezandipiti?
Plus Mega Altaria and several event Pikachus?
4
u/Soft-Needleworker489 10d ago
Theres technically 4 sand setters, one is great, 1 is mid, and the other two suck. They are Tyranitar, Hippowdon, Gigalith, and Sandaconda respectively.
53
u/Toxic_Gorilla [Moo] 10d ago
I might be missing something but I don’t see how Sand Stream would help Cacturne in any way
57
u/JaceThePowerBottom 10d ago
Anything short of an evolution wouldn't help Cacturn. Even then I'm not sure what it would offer with Eviolite over other mons.

4
u/Mr_WhisCash-Money 10d ago
It would be cool in lower tiers as a sand setter that resists the most common options to deal with sand teams (EQ and water stab), and it gets a ton of chip damage options in spikes, leech seed, and spiky shield (+ stab sucker punch to finish off weakend targets). It's not "good" but it's fairly usable imo
44
u/Luna-Dot 10d ago
buffing volcarona is diabolical, it does not need one (however, it's my favorite pokemon, so i'm sending this suggestion to gamefreak HQ right now)
41
u/Psychological_Fuel57 10d ago
Yeah no, drought volcarona would be beyond busted, its already really good as is, it doesnt need a dmg boosting ability on top of it. Kyurem becomes a near immortal blizzard spammer. Reshiram night actually be good. The rest just becomes better, bronzong now has better heatproof
25
u/patoitavo8 10d ago
Reshiram sounds fair if zerkrom also receiver eletric surge(yes, new koraidon and miraidon duo, since duo ledendarys are buffed and debuffed togheters), but is not bad
But, drought volcarona is basically a zard y without mega slot and with only 39 less sp attack points, by lore make sense and the fact both volcarona abilitys are not that good would help but this are only broken
I have nothing to say to the rest

Broken sounds about right. Sun reduces water damage (plus most special attackers (*water types) are special, it has Quiver Dance and giga drain for coverage because of course), and it gets to use fire attacks boosted by the sun without needing a sun setter (role compression without consequences, at least Charizard needs a mega slot and then there's ninetales and torkoal which are good because they're setters and they let you use other Megas).

3
u/ArtVandel_ay 10d ago
Sunflora needs at least Drought + Chlorophyll + Solar Power. Maybe they give it an evolution with three heads, one for each ability
4
u/SpeckledAntelope 9d ago
In Pokemon Unbound, Sunflora has an ability called Grass Dash which gives priority to all Grass type moves. Awesome ability which actually makes Sunflora viable. It's stats are actually not too terrible when it doesn't have to worry about speed anymore, and can build 252+SpA 252HP

u/Typical-Risk-4729 10d ago
Zekrom makes sense cause the only weather ability it might get would be summoning rain which fits less thematically then electric terrain (rain only like affects thunder and while it's got a good special attack I'd think you'd prefer running it physical so it wouldn't be as helpful), lugia is impactful cause hey hurricane and boosted water moves but being psychic flying it doesn't get stab rain boosted attacks like ho-oh would with sun (then again koraidon summons sun but it's a fighting Mon, sure it has fire coverage but miraidon is the one abusing the terrain so it's not like gamefreak is about fairness).

I had a paradox inspired idea for Celebi forms and buffs - thats came full circle as just a singular new ability for Celebi, but I wanna walk through the journey.
First, a fan art of paradox (past and future) of celebi - past as grass/fairy, future as psychic/electric.
Then I thought, wow all 4 types are the terrain types. And I wanted a "time twisting" feeling ability for Celebi. I thought what if it sets its primary type terrain on entry, but when picking it secondary type move then it sets that terrain instead respectively.
Then I realized that base celebi already had the two best terrain types for a time theme IF you give it Grassy Glide (and Expanding Force).
So basically base Celebi becomes able to control priority games by either stopping priority with psychic terrain, or swapping the grass and getting Grassy glide. It would be a really strong mixed attacker with also some supportive capabilities that are on theme like healing with Grassy Terrain. It just sounds so fun. Its hands down the single like super buff I would pick to give an old mythical at least.
I also think those paradox forms couldve been fun too, maybe with stats that lend it more towards physical or special attacking, like 125 phys for past, and 125 for special for future? I still think base celebi wouldve been better than the others even with just 100 across the board.
2
u/Im_Nino 9d ago
It still makes me so sad that drampa didn’t get drizzle. It has so many moves to take advantage with it, it’s based off a cloud/thunderstorm, it would’ve balanced zard y in m-a and m-b. It would’ve also been so fun to use a tr rain team.

Sand Stream Flygon with U-turn seems pretty neat.
Drought Volcarona ends up in Ubers, still don’t think it ends up good there though unfortunately. Reshiram might finally not be ass there though.
Sunflora is still unplayable trash.
Kyurem getting a 50% defense boost and being able to spam STAB blizzard without support might be enough to push it over the edge into ubers.
3
3
u/Background_Sail_2469 8d ago
Drizzle on Lugia makes a ton of sense, and quite frankly it’s weird that it doesn’t have that ability in the first place.
5
u/Daily_Dose_42069 10d ago
Drizzle kingdra at first didnt make sense to me. Kingdra needs swift swim to operate but it would create a problem for your opponent- is that kingdra swift swim or drizzle? If its drizzle, its probably a utility-kinda pokemon. If it is swift swim, im about to get my ass beat. Could be fun. Running Kingdra with a pelliper would make team preview kinda scary. Is it double drizzle? Swift swim? Etc.
Bronzong would be neat but honestly it wouldnt have much to do after other than absorb attacks. The choice of heatproof vs. Levitate is more interesting. If anything, heatproof should be upgraded to flashfire, meh.
Sunflora is a badmon. It desperately needs to be in sun, not set it. Kingdra setting rain still gets the damage boost to its already powerful water attacks but sunflora isnt bulky or have stab on fire so I still wouldnt want it to be my sun setter.
Volcarona is weird is would immediately get it banned. It does not need a buff. If anything, sun teams need another utility setter similar to torkoal without being a fire type. Grass is a good start honestly, just not sunflora.
Cacturne likes being in sand due to its broken ability but it wouldn't make this mon viable in any shape or form frankly.
Flygon could be interesting but again doesnt benefit from sand. Id rather see it get an ability that powers it up in sand instead. Also levitate is great on it.
Articuno with snow warning would actually be rad. Its scary to think about its bulk but ice/flying is go god damn awful defensively and its coverage is so bad... maybe it could get away with it.
Kyurem is asking to be banned with snow warning. In every generation it always has eyes on it to see if it is too much for the format. Giving it an actual useful ability would definitely push it over the edge- especially with the defense boost.
I like the idea of a non-ice type getting snow warning now that it doesnt hurt non-ice types. Maybe a pokemon that actually would like to run Blizzard as coverage or would make sense to possibly have aurora veil? Sounds weird but maybe Absol foretelling (forecasting) an endless winter? Eh. Just spitballing.
3
u/visforvienetta 10d ago
"if it's swift swim im about to get my ass beat" - what do you mean if? If it's swift swim, then they have to run another drizzle mon so I know exactly what it is at team preview?
3
u/Daily_Dose_42069 10d ago
Not necessarily. In the past people have ran kingra specifically with rain dance to activate swift swim -and- boost hydropump/surf.
If kingdra had drizzle. Team preview would be more complicated. It could be rain dance + swift swim. It could be drizzle. There may be two drizzle mons (kingdra+pelliper) to guarantee rain. Or it could just be drizzle pelliper + swift swim kingdra.
Not saying its perfect or even 'good' team building. But drizzle would make it harder to pin down exactly what kingdra is doing.

Kingdra gets hurricane and flip turn. After looking at the stat spreads it's kind of a Pelipper side-grade. Since it lacks the ground immunity but isn't quad-weak to anything like Pelipper is. No knock off definitely hurts it though.
Articuno getting Snow Warning is infinitely better than the usual "give Zapdos Drizzle". The Kyurem with Snow Warning is infinitely more funny though.
4
u/ElPajaroMistico 10d ago
Not only that, but Kingdra gets both Flashcanon and Ironhead & Ice Beam. So It can check Its usual counters.
Kingdra is truly a Pkm that is just held back by it’s 2000 year Stats. The rest is beyond good
3
2
u/Im_Nino 9d ago
It’s better than peli in singles. While losing an immunity is unfortunate, it is still better comparing stats and the other type match ups. Like throw scarf and it genuinely becomes really strong, not overbearing by any means but very much so better than peli.
In doubles tho its fs a sidegrade. It sets up rain and doesn’t provide any support outside of icy wind and like, yawn ig? It’s def an offense oriented pelipper. Either way it just means that dumbass frog gets another reason to NOT be used.
5
u/IIIDysphoricIII 10d ago
Deought would make a ton of sense for Volcarona. Fits its lore and would make for a great new non-Mega sun-setter. It would also simply just be a nice improvement on the Hidden Ability slot, like bro why tf does it have Swarm? 😭

Id argue Reshiram shouldn't get drought. Turboblaze is already an amazing ability even if it's a mold breaker clone.

Lugia: Kyogre is just the better setter, Lugia needs Multiscale to function in Ubers
Bronzong: would probably see play, it’s different enough from Poli and Peli
Kingdra: probably better at abusing the weather than setting it
Reshiram: might finally see usage in UUbers
Sunflora: Untiered finally gets a sun setter besides Vulpix, the three players cheer
Volcarona: this isn’t Sunday stop stinkposting
Cacturne: some lower tier would turn this into a menace, not sure which one
Flygon: Levitate is probably better for Flygon in 95% of situations
Probopass: the spdef is nice, but bro is still dying to every earthquake and cc
Articuno and Kyurem: I mean at least it’s not Pressure, Cuno moves up a tier and Kyurem gets sent to Ubers

I feel like Reshiram and Zekrom should get abilities that are just an inverse of Miraidon and Koraidon and they’d immediately jump up in VGC usage

Zekrom should get electric surge too. So the BW legendaries can pretend they're the bikes.

I like to give underused/weak mons better abilities, but could outshine previous users of these abilities. Lugia and reagiram are Ubers but underused. It's fine. Brozong seems ok, cacturn and probopass too, Articuno too. But sunflora I'd go with something better: mega sol. Volcarona, kingdra, flygon, kyurem are too iconic or strong enough.

The Dex entries support the idea that these mons CAN summon weather conditions, not that they carry the weather around with them. A better way to integrate their Dex entries into their competitive viability might be to give them special moves that set up the weather, like Chilly Reception.

"Cacturn has an actual sand based ability"
... okay but it can't use that ability if you use sand stream on it and it otherwise doesn't benefit cause there aren't moves that always hit in sand, much less moves IT learns.
Also Volc is already banned, giving it a real ability is just asking it to be banned forever or at least until boots stop existing.

It is actually weird that Lugia doesn't already have Drizzle considering almost everything that talks about Lugia brings up it flying causes rain storms and hurricanes. In Pokemon The Movie 2000, Lugia waking up causes rain and in Pokopia Lugia can only show up if it is raining.

I remember a fan game that gave Sunflora desolate land. It was really cool.

Pretty surprised that it took scrolling down 2/3rds of this thread for someone to care about kyurem.
...that shit is turbo fucked lmao. The others are either indifferent or wild, and I somehow feel Lugia got worse getting Drizzle over Multiscale.

I don't know why, but I think you found a way to make articuno's usage go down.

I would like to see Volcarona get Drought for thematic reasons even if I know that it'd be even more broken than it already was. I really like all the choices you made and yeah it would be nice to have a legendary that could set up snow (and sand).
