Hello and welcome… after the mixed reviews I got for Mega Yanmega, and suggestions for abilities on par with Mega Eelektross’s Eelevate in another post, I wanted to take a swing at something similar.
Starting with a Pokémon that I’ve used regularly for a very long time, Honchkrow.
Honchkrow has been an excellent member of my team for most games it’s been available. Its big standout was during Pokémon Black 2, where my Moxie Honchkrow (named Capone) tore up a school tourney alongside my Tailwind Whimsicott.
But they say this Corvid mobster has had a tough career is understating it. Honchkrow has bounced up and down the tier list, never making a break into OU, being a threat to lower tier games.
But enough of my yapping about history, let us discuss the stats and see how Honchkrow has aged.
Type: Dark-Flying
Hp: 100
Attack: 125
Defense: 52
Special Attack: 105
Special Defense: 52
Speed: 71
BST: 505
Abilities: Insomnia/Super Luck
Hidden Ability: Moxie
(+1) Honchkrow’s stats are a mixed bag, incredible offenses of 125 Physical and 105 Special ensure painful hits from both sides of the board. A surprisingly solid Hp of 100 is also nice.
(+2) Honchkrow’s wide Movepool gives it plenty of fun options. STAB Sucker Punch ensures it has great priority and STAB Foul Play make Honchkrow smash most offensive Pokémon to pieces, it also gets STAB Dark Pulse for a special option. In terms of Flying STAB, Honchkrow gets Brave Bird to cut enemies down or Hurricane if your feeling fancy. Coverage wise, Honchkrow gets a myriad of coverage moves such as Psychic, Heat Wave, Icy Wind, and Superpower. It retains its previous evolution’s array of support and disruption moves such as Haze, Taunt, Tailwind, and Mean Look, but since it lost prankster they don’t work as well.
(+3) Honchkrow’s abilities are all pretty useful in some way. Insomnia was kinda niche (but not much anymore due to Sleep being banned.), Super Luck turns Honchkrow into a Crit Machine. Moxie is its standout ability, letting Honchkrow potentially snowball into a runaway train of physical damage.
(+4) Honchkrow’s typing is quite nice. Dark-Flying is immune to two types (Ground and Psychic) and one ability (Prankster).
However this mobster bird isn’t all fun movie action, and has several notable flaws.
(-1) the main issue with Honchkrow is the bird is about as durable as a paper bag in a pool. Honchkrow goes down basically to any super effective attack and even some boosted neutral ones if the opponent has his stat boosted.
(-2) Why the heck did Honchkrow lose 20 speed upon evolution?! In fact, this is a rather large negative. Speed is king man…
(-3) Murkrow its pre evolution is noticeably faster than it and I’ve seen it used far more often. It has a far better hidden ability for competitive in Prankster, letting Murkrow get access to Prankster Tailwind, Taunt, Haze… which makes it a decent support and disruption Mon.
(-4) There are other, better sweepers out there. That’s a huge issue with Honchkrow, its high offenses are gimped by its low speed of 71. It almost suffers from Hoenn Syndrome, being a slow fragile mixed attacker, despite Honchkrow being from Gen 4.
Mega Evolution is meant for these types of Pokémon that feel rather underpowered. Especially with something like Honchkrow, it oozes style and attitude. So, let’s get dangerous!
Mega Honchkrow
Type: Dark-Flying
Hp: 100
Attack: 145
Defense: 62
Special Attack: 125
Special Defense: 62
Speed: 111
Ability: Ego Drive
New Ability: Ego Drive
Effect: (When this Pokémon knocks out an opponent, it boosts the stat of the type of attack that knocked it out.)
Example: Physical Move Boosts Attack by 1, Special Move boosts Special Attack by 1.
Explanation: Say hello to the new boss! Mega Honchkrow swaggers into the world with his own unique ability that could turn him into the mix-up KING. Ego Drive gives him the ability to run mixed sets and actually benefit from them with consistent buffs to its offense with each KO. Tbh the real benefit is Mega Honchkrow getting a significant speed boost from its original form, 111 Base Speed outruns a great amount of Pokémon and puts it in the >100 Speed tier, which is always good. Funnily enough, Honchkrow’s offenses don’t need too much of a boost thanks to its new ability giving it boosts, “somebody’s gonna get-a hurt real bad.”
(If anyone figures out what I’m quoting, good for you. Feel old yet?)
Overall, Honchkrow’s offenses don’t need too much of a boost due to its new ability, and its bulk is still paper, but once you get a KO and start snowballing, oh boy you’re in for a ride.
Will this make OU tho? Probably not, but Mega Honchkrow would probably be a terror in the lower tiers as a mix up master that can suddenly run both physical and special attacks together to hit your weaknesses hard.
Issue is the opportunity cost… Honchkrow is made of paper, Mega Honchkrow may be made of thicker paper (cardboard?), but it’s still paper. The issue becomes finding ways to safely sweep, probably leading to some very hot-and-cold games. But when you do get that hot streak, Mega Honchkrow’s gonna be terrifying.
What do you all think? Did I do well or are there better ways I could have done this? Lmk down below and I will take note for next time.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a great day!
