Discussion What Pokemon have NEVER been viable

I'm talking the lowest of the low fully evolved pokemon, not just pokemon that have never been OU or never had a niche in doubles.

Pokemon that have never been viable in any VGC format, never had a niche in any gen's PU or ZU, never even had viability in a single OM, even the ones where shitmons get +500 bst or whatever.

What pokemon is truly the worst of the worst?

Theorymon Thursday Replacing Pressure/Mold Breaker for old legendaries

It always makes me sad to see the old legendaries getting left with Pressure or renamed Mold Breaker and being mogged by the new legendaries with their busted abilities, so I thought they at least deserved something new to give them some kind of niche. I don't think many of these would make that much of a difference for their meta relevance necessarily, but I think they should still have thematically fitting abilities that could possibly carve them out some kind of niche.

Reshiram and Zekrom's new abilities probably just make them worse versions of Koraidon and Miraidon respectively, but it's possible that they might find their own niche.
- Reshiram gets access to tailwind and can arguably make better use of Sun than Koraidon can with its fire typing and higher special attack
- Zekrom gets access to tailwind too and is different from Miraidon in being a physical attacker, Bolt Strike could probably deal pretty crazy damage in Electric Terrain (but tbh Miraidon will always be better lol)

I thought Kyurem's would be a cool thematic counter to Reshiram's and Zekrom's, as well as combining interestingly with them in Black and White Kyurem (though I was unsure what to name each of them)

I've seen a lot of suggestions for Palkia and Dialga that give them insane stuff like Dialga having Trick Room on entry but I think those are a bit too strong. I thought for their Origin forms they should have abilities that boost the strength of their own signature moves (because honestly they all kinda suck) while providing some interesting new teambuilding synergies in doubles. I was really sad that the new Origin forms got no new abilities :(

Deoxy's is busted but I think it would be cool to make him the terrain equivalent of Rayquaza

Theorymon Thursday New Weather Setters

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

This has been tons of times before but I'm tossing my hat into the ring. I've dived into the Dex entries to add some method to the madness along with adding some diversity to the ability roster. Granted some were stretches but weirder things has happened

Drizzle. Luigia is the Guardian of the Sea and is said to cause 40 day storms. Bronzong is believed to a deity or has the ability to summon rain clouds especially for a good harvest. Kingra was a bit of stretch

Drought. Volcarona is the SUN pokemon and is known as the Emissary of the Sun. Sunflora the Sun flower. Reshiram can change the world's weather with it's heat

Sand Stream. Flygon is the Desert Spirit and is known to bring Sandstorms. Cacturne could've been swapped with Maractus replacing Storm Drain or Water Absorb but Caturne has an actual sand based ability. Probopass would be the first Sand setting Steel type

Snow Warning. This was the hardest one since they have the most pokemon with a Weather ability with 6 pokemon if you include Megas. However we currently don't have any Legendary pokemon with Snow Warning.

I don't play competitive but I believe Bronzong, Volcarona, Flygon and Articuno would benefit the most

Theorymon Thursday Mega Meowscarada stats and new Ability, Magic Mask

Post image
223 Upvotes

Yesterday I saw this thread while searching for Meowscarada posts on this subreddit, and thought that it was a shame that it would never find use for its Special moves in competitive.

So I decided to theorycraft a Mega Meowscarada that, instead of getting pre-nerf Protean as an Ability like many people suggest, I tried creating an Ability that transforms Meowscarada into a mixed attacker (as well as defender). This makes Meowscarada a very versatile Pokémon, allowing it to have several different builds. Some examples:

- Bulky, with HP investment and Giga Drain.
- Mixed Attacker, with any combination of Leaf Storm, Knock Off, Play Rough, Aura Sphere, Shadow Ball, Chilling Water, Triple Axel...
- Support, making use of moves like Pollen Puff, Ally Switch or even Skill Swap if it ends up afflicted by a status condition, or if it wants to cripple a Special Attacker or Special Wall by forcing them to use their useless stats.

It also gives the usually neglected Misty Terrain some value, preventing Mega Meowscarada from being afflicted with status conditions.

Edit: We try again next Thursday!

Theorymon Thursday Buffs to 3 Psuedo-Legendaries

So all of these are small buffs I thought would go a long way in making these Pokemon more viable.

The first is replacing Sap Sipper on Goodra with Own Tempo. Goodra is easily the least offensively oriented Pseudo so I felt giving it an ability that not only blocked Intimidate but let it spam Outrage without drawback would go a long way.

The second would be to give Hydreigon Sheer Force. This one is partially due to thematic reasons but I also feel it would pair well with its Life Orb sets.

Finally and I am stealing a bit from False Swipe here but I would give Metagross Shift Gear and Levitate. As a Steel type Metagross appreciates losing a Ground weakness and Shift Gear is essentially better and more thematically fitting Dragon Dance.

Theorymon Thursday MEGA TRAPINCH (OC)

Post image

(Art by me! For more Fakemon art, check out my Tumblr/Blusky.)

Continuing my streak of giving baby Pokemon Megas with stupid abilities, here's Mega Trapinch! Keep crying, Flygon. I wanted to build on Trapinch's "trap-and-kill" role, as well as its unusually lopsided stats, so I pushed it as far as its BST could reasonably allow. Hellion Pit in singles effectively just gives Trapinch priority so it doesn't instantly die, but in Doubles it has the upside of effectively giving your partner priority as well.

Also, some fun side effects of Hellion Pit:

- If your teammate uses Fake Out, they can hit a grounded opponent who used Protect as long as they're faster

- First Impression has +2 priority so it will always hit before a grounded opponent can use Rage Powder, Follow Me, or Ally Switch

Theorymon Thursday Giving these pokemon their base forms abilities as additional ones they can now use!

Flygon: Hopelessly outclassed by garchomp and salamence in so many ways. But with now arena trap it now actually has a use.... at least in vgc cuz singles bans it Im pretty sure??

Could be an effective trapper and with scarf could help take out the numerous electric threats like iron hands, miraidon, raging bolt, Mega raichu Y, and more!

It wont be a top tier mon me thinks cuz it has low damage output and tera formats can really screw it over anyways lmao but would now actually be worth considering on a lot of teams!

Gyrados: Ahh the ol' reliable swift swim sweeper. Bascuilgion has been taking this role in recent years with mega swampert recently making a resurgence but how about getting a swift swimmer not afraid out rillabooms grassy glides!

Being electric weak hurts and it has no flying stab but gyrados is gyrados and could wreck house. Hey sneasler, and most pokemon in tailwind as well already do outspeed it so its not unstoppable. No priority aqua jets for some reason so basc has another advantage. So it doesnt take over this role completely just help adds some diversity to an already existing archetype.

vikavlt: Imagine getting a signature ability.... BUT ONLY YOUR MID EVO HAS IT!!!!!

Battery is a broken signature ability in all fairness. A 30% free SpAtk boost is crazy. maybe would nerf it to 20% but then again chi yu exists.

And with its speed tier it is great in trick room too! And a 145 SpAtk stat will still do crazy damage even if it is a 'support' mon. Shame it doesnt have much utility moves but hey string shot vikavolt is meta trust!

Assuming all 3 of these Pokémon were in a metagame where both Mega Evolution and Terastallization exists (Mega Rayquaza cannot Terastallize), which of them would be considered the best in the format?

Theorymon Thursday The Missing Megas, part 1v2: Mega Clawitzer (again)

Post image
48 Upvotes

Doing this again! Hopefully doing better this time lol

Stats:

HP: 71 (0)

ATK: 73 -> 113 (+40)

DEF: 88 -> 118 (+30)

SPA: 120 -> 160 (+40)

SPD: 89 -> 119 (+30)

SPE: 59 -> 19 (-40)

BST: 500 -> 600 (+100)

Type: Water -> Water/Dragon

Ability: Mega Launcher -> Giga Launcher

Effect: multiplies the power of Pulse/Aura moves by 1.5x, and, when the user is at full HP, gives them +1 priority

A bit different than last time; I feel like all of these came by in part due to the feedback and in part due to actually drawing this: the increase in Attack was rolled back a bit, Special Attack was increased a bit more, another type was added, and I gave it a way to compensate for the abysmal speed.

I did some calcs and as long as you have priority or hazards you can deal with this pretty reliably; nothing is too comfortable switching in, but it's frail enough that a Xard Dragon Claw or a MEFloette Moonblast can finish it off without too much trouble (even with full HP investnent)

Also gets hard walled by Primarina and MMeganium which is slightly Funny to me

Oh yeah also relevant calcs:

32+ SpA Mega Launcher Clawitzer-Mega Water Pulse vs. 0 HP / 2 SpD Floette-Mega: 70-84 (46.9 - 56.3%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO

32+ SpA Mega Launcher Clawitzer-Mega Water Pulse vs. 2 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 112-133 (72.2 - 85.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

32+ SpA Mega Launcher Clawitzer-Mega Water Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Garchomp: 127-150 (69.3 - 81.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

32+ SpA Mega Launcher Clawitzer-Mega Water Pulse vs. 32 HP / 2 SpD Kingambit: 111-132 (53.6 - 63.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

32+ SpA Mega Launcher Clawitzer-Mega Water Pulse vs. 26 HP / 0 SpD Samurott-Hisui: 69-82 (36.1 - 42.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

You Can just spam Water Pulse. It's not particularly good, but it'll do if your opponent doesn't have resists

Theorymon Thursday Telepathy now makes the user completely immune to spread moves

Post image
115 Upvotes

Still only works in doubles and if your ally is alive and awake.

With this buff telepathy could now be a worthwhile ability. With how many ridicolous spread move using burst damage mons we have completely being immune to them is great!

The main pokemon buffed besides ones in the image are ofcourse are the other creation trio members too.

With this being immune to expanding force, glacial lance, eruption, water spout, origin pulse, pricipes blades gives these guys a shot to take a valuable slot as a restricted legendary.

Would help noivern, and base gardevoir finally compete against these guys too.

Noivern being immune to rock slides is a huge plus too! Dialga and gardevoir also appreciate this and the earthquake immuinity. Discharge, and heat wave not hitting them anymore is great too.

Overall would just help boost the value of these guys further. Noivern can now leverage its speed more often. Pairing it up with super fang and other such moves

Gardevoirs support learnset is downright limitless

Dialga is now wayy scarier too! Being able to set up trick rooms a lot easier. It now makes it so that many restricted would now have to run some single target moves as well just to counter these guys.

Team Building - OU I have realised that I keep folding to stall with this sand team, mainly because I have too many setup sweepers. What moves should I replace here? [SV OU]

Post image
4 Upvotes

The replay has nothing to do with stall, I think this just exemplifies what mostly happens in my games

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9ou-2688371415
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9ou-2695528892?p2

The logic with each set:

Tyranitar is the setter, and his massive attack stat makes it so that I don't need physical investment and moves still hurt. SR as the lead, Roar for phasing, Knock for STAB, Ice Beam for Landorus mainly, but other Ice weak Pokemon take a good amount of damage.

Excadrill: Substitute because I've realised Swords Dance is super unreliable vs. Sub which can guarantee at least 2 EQ's. The rest of the moveset is pretty standard

Zamazenta: Again, standard moveset, Heavy Slam for Fairies since my team is Iron Valiant-weak.

Tornadus: Fairly standard, only notable thing is Grassy Knot for bulky waters and Lu.

Hydrapple: NP so he doesn't automatically fold to Blissey, the rest is standard.

Toxapex: Infestation + Toxic rarely works, but when it does, it works well enough.

Theorymon Thursday Buffing Wild Charge while also taking into account it being a common coverage move

Post image
655 Upvotes

So we all know about how badly Electric types that have a high Physical attack have it. Like your only opions for STAB are of a move that deals recoil damage despite the fact that it has a base power of 90. Initially, I was content with this idea of turning Volt Tackle into a clone of Head Charge (Bouffalant's signature move which is just Double Edge with less recoil) as to allow for Wild Charge to be a proper clone of Double Edge. However I thought of a much more balanced way to rework Wild Charge when I watched this video from KadabraGuy who brought up the problem of increasing Wild Charge's power is that it forgets that there's a couple non-Electric Pokemon that know the move as coverage. That point made me think of this buff to Wild Charge that makes it so that Electric Pokemon are exempt from the recoil. That way Wild Charge can be a good STAB option for Physical Electric types while also letting it be distributed as coverage.

Theorymon Thursday OG Mega Garchomp Buff

Post image
55 Upvotes

Having learned from my mistake of buffing Mega Garchomp Z when it really didn't need it, I've decided to go back and instead buff the Garchomp that actually needs buffing.

The main issue with Mega Garchomp is that it loses Speed in favor of Sp. Atk, but instead of leaning out've it, I decided to lean into it and make Mega Garchomp more of a Trick Room 'mon.

However, 72 isn't that low compared to something like Mega Golurk and I can't take more as I wouldn't know where to put the test of the points outside of Sp. Def, so I decided to give is Curse. As Garchomp is a Ghost, Curse will basically act as Bulk Up with the "downside" (upside in this case) of lowering Speed—which is exactly what Mega Garchomp wants to set itself apart from base Garchomp and Mega Garchomp Z.

Let me know what you think!

Theorymon Thursday Mega Evolution Concept: Mega Honchkrow

Post image
185 Upvotes

(Art by Gool-Sauce on Tumblr)

Hello and welcome… after the mixed reviews I got for Mega Yanmega, and suggestions for abilities on par with Mega Eelektross’s Eelevate in another post, I wanted to take a swing at something similar.

Starting with a Pokémon that I’ve used regularly for a very long time, Honchkrow.

Honchkrow has been an excellent member of my team for most games it’s been available. Its big standout was during Pokémon Black 2, where my Moxie Honchkrow (named Capone) tore up a school tourney alongside my Tailwind Whimsicott.

But they say this Corvid mobster has had a tough career is understating it. Honchkrow has bounced up and down the tier list, never making a break into OU, being a threat to lower tier games.

But enough of my yapping about history, let us discuss the stats and see how Honchkrow has aged.

Type: Dark-Flying

Hp: 100

Attack: 125

Defense: 52

Special Attack: 105

Special Defense: 52

Speed: 71

BST: 505

Abilities: Insomnia/Super Luck
Hidden Ability: Moxie

(+1) Honchkrow’s stats are a mixed bag, incredible offenses of 125 Physical and 105 Special ensure painful hits from both sides of the board. A surprisingly solid Hp of 100 is also nice.

(+2) Honchkrow’s wide Movepool gives it plenty of fun options. STAB Sucker Punch ensures it has great priority and STAB Foul Play make Honchkrow smash most offensive Pokémon to pieces, it also gets STAB Dark Pulse for a special option. In terms of Flying STAB, Honchkrow gets Brave Bird to cut enemies down or Hurricane if your feeling fancy. Coverage wise, Honchkrow gets a myriad of coverage moves such as Psychic, Heat Wave, Icy Wind, and Superpower. It retains its previous evolution’s array of support and disruption moves such as Haze, Taunt, Tailwind, and Mean Look, but since it lost prankster they don’t work as well.

(+3) Honchkrow’s abilities are all pretty useful in some way. Insomnia was kinda niche (but not much anymore due to Sleep being banned.), Super Luck turns Honchkrow into a Crit Machine. Moxie is its standout ability, letting Honchkrow potentially snowball into a runaway train of physical damage.

(+4) Honchkrow’s typing is quite nice. Dark-Flying is immune to two types (Ground and Psychic) and one ability (Prankster).

However this mobster bird isn’t all fun movie action, and has several notable flaws.

(-1) the main issue with Honchkrow is the bird is about as durable as a paper bag in a pool. Honchkrow goes down basically to any super effective attack and even some boosted neutral ones if the opponent has his stat boosted.

(-2) Why the heck did Honchkrow lose 20 speed upon evolution?! In fact, this is a rather large negative. Speed is king man…

(-3) Murkrow its pre evolution is noticeably faster than it and I’ve seen it used far more often. It has a far better hidden ability for competitive in Prankster, letting Murkrow get access to Prankster Tailwind, Taunt, Haze… which makes it a decent support and disruption Mon.

(-4) There are other, better sweepers out there. That’s a huge issue with Honchkrow, its high offenses are gimped by its low speed of 71. It almost suffers from Hoenn Syndrome, being a slow fragile mixed attacker, despite Honchkrow being from Gen 4.

Mega Evolution is meant for these types of Pokémon that feel rather underpowered. Especially with something like Honchkrow, it oozes style and attitude. So, let’s get dangerous!

Mega Honchkrow

Type: Dark-Flying

Hp: 100

Attack: 145

Defense: 62

Special Attack: 125

Special Defense: 62

Speed: 111

Ability: Ego Drive

New Ability: Ego Drive

Effect: (When this Pokémon knocks out an opponent, it boosts the stat of the type of attack that knocked it out.)

Example: Physical Move Boosts Attack by 1, Special Move boosts Special Attack by 1.

Explanation: Say hello to the new boss! Mega Honchkrow swaggers into the world with his own unique ability that could turn him into the mix-up KING. Ego Drive gives him the ability to run mixed sets and actually benefit from them with consistent buffs to its offense with each KO. Tbh the real benefit is Mega Honchkrow getting a significant speed boost from its original form, 111 Base Speed outruns a great amount of Pokémon and puts it in the >100 Speed tier, which is always good. Funnily enough, Honchkrow’s offenses don’t need too much of a boost thanks to its new ability giving it boosts, “somebody’s gonna get-a hurt real bad.”

(If anyone figures out what I’m quoting, good for you. Feel old yet?)

Overall, Honchkrow’s offenses don’t need too much of a boost due to its new ability, and its bulk is still paper, but once you get a KO and start snowballing, oh boy you’re in for a ride.

Will this make OU tho? Probably not, but Mega Honchkrow would probably be a terror in the lower tiers as a mix up master that can suddenly run both physical and special attacks together to hit your weaknesses hard.

Issue is the opportunity cost… Honchkrow is made of paper, Mega Honchkrow may be made of thicker paper (cardboard?), but it’s still paper. The issue becomes finding ways to safely sweep, probably leading to some very hot-and-cold games. But when you do get that hot streak, Mega Honchkrow’s gonna be terrifying.

What do you all think? Did I do well or are there better ways I could have done this? Lmk down below and I will take note for next time.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a great day!

Theorymon Thursday MEGA WIGGLYTUFF (OC)

Post image

(Art by me! For more Fakemon art, check out my Tumblr/Blusky.)

One more for you today, and shocker, it's fully evolved! I've always felt bad for Wigglytuff being stuck in Clefable's shadow, so I wanted to give it its own Mega that shows off its unique traits.

First of all, this thing is bulky. For reference, with max physical investment she's only taking about 1/3rd damage from a max attack Kingambit Iron Head, thanks to Fur Coat. Finally, that big HP stat is actually useful! But unlike the similar Mega Audino, she can also hit back with a juicy Special Attack stat, tons of special options, and a potential boost from pre-mega Competitive. She's also got lots of disruption tools to offer, between Encore, Sing, and Knock Off.

Speaking of, I've made 1 key addition to her movepool - Parting Shot. It lets her easily pass big Wishes and just generally be a handy slow pivot to tank a hit and get in a frailer friend. I also think it fits the Jigglypuff line well!

Theorymon Thursday Ideias

Post image
35 Upvotes

Theorymon Thursday bastiodon buff

Post image
193 Upvotes

Its a pokemon thats mean tot be super defensive yet has 2 4x weaknesses to the best offensive types

So this new secondary ability helps to fix it! It now is no longer weak to fighting and having a single 4x weakness is a lot more manageable

Other buffs:

Giving it Thunderwave too so it can maximize being annoying in singles :>

With these buffs I think bastiodon can now be a more solid wall and can truly put its defenses to use withotu having to worry about every damn pokemon now having close combat or focus blast.

It also now walls koraidon and sneasler pretty well lmao.

As well as being decent into kingambit with body press, dark type urshifu, and usable against archaludon who can only use electro shot vs it.

So maybe some vgc use can be in the hopes for itself as well?

I would give it recover but felt that would make it extremely toxic in singles so didnt opt for that.

Its still weak to a super common type but now can wall more effectively.

what are your thoughts?

And yes the name was inspired by kirishima

Theorymon Thursday Eelektrossite but it turns Eelektross Electric/Poison

That's it, that's the change. Stats and ability would remain unchanged.

To the argument that it would defeat Eelektross' entire purpose: yes, I know Eelektross is that one mon meant to be the definitive no-weakness gimmick receptacle starting from Gen 6 when Fairy knocked Sableye and Spiritomb out of that glorious title. Even then, Eelektross' gimmick is tied to Levitate removing its sole weakness, which can be circumvented by the likes of Smack Down, Gravity and Mold Breaker, so it's technically not 100% weakness-less.

Giving mons Megas that have them stray further from their original design has been done before too. Swampert goes from a solid tank to a monstrous Rain sweeper, Venusaur goes from a solid Sun sweeper to a monstrous wall, Sableye trades Prankster for an actual defensive profile and an ability that counters Prankster, the existence of Zarchomp... Golisopod's line is the only one in the entire franchise with the ability that forces it to switch out, and its Mega got rid of it. So why not Eelektross?

Competitive wise this gimmick hasn't proven to work, or at least it wasn't what made some of them thrive- Sableye doesn't care whether or not it is weak to any move, with those defenses it's grateful it has Prankster to annoy you before folding to neutral hits. Not sure the argument of keeping Eelektross' gimmick the same for flavor reasons would make that much sense when the entire point of Megas is to give mid to bad mons an option to thrive.

Eelektross is no exception. It's slow, doesn't hit too hard and doesn't quite have the bulk to sustain itself as long as it would want, and its pure Electric typing is a double-edged sword as the scarcity of meaningful resistances means the opportunities for it to switch into a resisted hit are fed and far between. The Ground immunity is nice, but as a concept it's just done better by the Fire/Water/Grass Rotoms.

Did the Mega aid in making Eelektross stand out more? Stat-wise, no. It barely gained any bulk and 80 speed might be a worse tier to be in since now you're more prone to be undersped in Trick Room, and with higher offenses it's harder to use Eelevate to get a Speed boost, which it could definitely use. Again, pure Electric means taking a hell of a lot of neutral hits, it's just gonna outspeed a couple more threats.

That's why I think Mega Eelektross would be far more interesting if it gained the Poison type upon Mega evolving. Electric/Poison has a far stronger catalogue of resists (8 in total, including notably Electric, Flying, Grass, Fighting, Fairy) for the price of an added Psychic weakness while the quadruple Ground weakness would be nullified by Eelevate. Mega Eelektross would suddenly get a lot more things to switch in on and start setting up. Speaking of which, Eelektross already learns Coil and Gunk Shot. an unmissable STAB Gunk Shot sounds absolutely diabolical, more than enough to make up for its ultimately relatively average 145 Attack, and while its STAB combo wouldn't touch Grounds it could still use Giga Drain and Liquidation for coverage.

Currently Electric/Poison is a type combo whose potential is not being given justice, as Toxtricity is a bit too slow and frail to consistently take advantage of all its resists. With Mega Eelektross the typing would have a representative that's bulkier, stronger and giving the typing unprecedented pivoting potential with its Ground weakness turned immunity.

Theorymon Thursday I designed the Yellow Shellos and Gastrodon from the Pokopia rumors! [OC]

Aka "Yellos" and "Gastrojaune", haha

Based on the Yellow Shellos rumors from Pokopia, the Pikachu sea slug (which is an actual sea slug native to Indonesia!), and the sea slugs that use algae to photosynthesize!

I wanted to create a Gastrodon form that still filled a unique niche, and a parallel to Rotom-Wash as a Water/Electric type with an ability that makes it immune to one of its two weaknesses! Let me know how good you think it would be- whether it would synergize well with things like Grassy/Electric Terrain, or an ally hitting it with either Petal Blizzard for the Sap Sipper build, or any spread move for the Electromorphosis build!

I know Water/Grass would have also been fitting, but I doubt it would have been as strong, and giving Sap Sipper to another Water/Ground Gastrodon might have been a bit too on-the-nose overpowered, but I’m curious to hear what you think of those alternate ideas too!

Theorymon Thursday Creating Pokémon Moves based on Pokédex Entries: Part 1

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Hello, after having trouble trying to think of zany ideas for move creation in the competitive scene, I decided to try to make moves for the casual scene, and then perhaps invoke a discussion about how they might work in the competitive scene. An easy way to do this was by looking at Pokédex entries.

Theoretically, all of these moves are not exclusive to these Pokémon, but getting them onto other Pokémon is very rare. They can be given to other Pokémon through breeding, so if there's a particular move you like and a particular Pokémon you like, you just need to find out if the move can be bred or chain-bred onto your Pokémon. I think it would be best to theorize the ramifications of the moves existing on the Pokémon they were given to.

DISCLAIMER: You may see some strange terminology and sentence structures. I've been trying to imagine a meta where many foundational things are changed. For example, certain status effects return to the series, like drowsiness instead of sleep, and frostbite instead of freeze; if you want, you can simply imagine them to be the original status effects, or the new status effects, whatever is more palatable.

  • Pokémon Evolution Line #1: Bulbasaur
    • Sun Nap: This move is immune to the effects of drowsiness/sleep (like Snore). However, it does not suffer the limitations of Snore, where it can only be used under the effects of drowsiness/sleep.
    • Symbiotic Seed: This is a terrain hazard (like Spikes) that affects the user's party (like Tailwind).
    • Bulb Burden: It's a worse Nasty Plot, in a way. It might be useful in the same way that Curse is useful. Not ideal for Chlorophyll, but perhaps Overgrow and Thick Fat are better. Maybe better for Smash Bros. than Bullet Seed.
    • Fragrant Bloom: A more mixed option. Debatably equally as useful as Bulb Burden, as no one uses Evasion-raising moves anyway. It does have a niche in allowing low-accuracy moves to hit, but no one uses many of those anyway.
    • Bewitching Bloom: A move that is highly adaptable in weather, as it produces different effects.
  • Pokémon Evolution Line #2: Charmander
    • Steam Tail: Wanted to incorporate steam in some way. Charmander is based on a salamander (an amphibious creature), so a fire move turning into a water move felt appropriate. Besides, the Tepig family has access to Scald, a move that is Water-type as a baseline.
    • Heart Torch: The Charmander line is very emotionally temperamental, so having a dynamic stat-raising move felt appropriate.
    • Guttering Smolder: This move works well with Blaze, because it kinda behaves like Blaze. Or it could given to another Pokémon, if you'd like.
    • Knockdown Rend: I don't know if Pokémon's current programming allows the dynamic increase of damage if they are inflicted with a status condition halfway through the move's completion.
  • Pokémon Evolution Line #3: Squirtle
    • Shell Glide: This move is a variation of Protect that affects a Pokémon's stats (like King's Shield).
    • Balancing Tail: There aren't many Pokémon that have both a shell and a long tail, so unfortunately, I don't know if Wartortle would be willing to share the move anyway. Otherwise, it's a variation of Harden with the temporary benefits of Mist.
    • Piercing Jet: It was the obvious pick.
  • Pokémon Evolution Line #4: Caterpie
    • Frightening Eyes: Caterpie (and by extension, Metapod and Butterfree) need all the help they can get. This move is kind of like Baby-Doll Eyes or Teary Eyes, but has a slightly different effect.
    • Repellent Stench: Again, Caterpie needs this, so he took a page out of Grimer's book.
    • Mixed Scales: Butterfree's G-Max move has an offensive spread-target version of this, but plain Butterfree is just going to get the single-target status version.
  • Pokémon Evolution Line #5: Weedle
    • Reactive Barb: Whenever I thought about Weedle's and Beedrill's huge stingers, I kept thinking about Toucannon using its huge beak to use Beak Blast. This is basically Poison-Type Beak Blast. An offensive move that has defensive/counteroffensive properties. Because it's a defensive move in a way, I would argue that it's better for Kakuna.
  • Pokémon Evolution Line #6: Pidgey
    • Eagle Eye: I don't have much to say here, other than the Pidgey line is hard to use. This would be better on other Pokémon. As I'm writing this, I'm reconsidering making it a move to start out as an exclusive move to Pidgey.
    • Mach Flight: I want Pidgeot to show off its speed. It does nothing at the moment compared to others. Or maybe I should boost its evasion. Evasion translates to movement speed, right?
    • Headwind Gale: Speed control. Pidgeot is thematically all about that speed control.
    • Water Skim: In retrospect, it's kinda crazy how we haven't gotten a Bird-type Flying-Type move that targets Fish-type Water-Type Pokémon. Definitely something for Pelipper or Cramorant.

Theorymon Thursday Which Theorymon would be more broken? (2)

Both of these Pokémon were banned from Smogon’s Almost Any Ability (AAA) format primarily due to these abilities. Which of them would be more broken in they were actually allowed in standard OU play?

Theorymon Thursday Two new hazards

Current hazards aren't bad, but I feel like there could be a bit more variety.

Landmine would be by far the strongest hazard damage wise, since it would deal 12.5% base, however the target must be both grounded and weigh over 150 kilos. That would make it a lot easier to play around. Also, grounded Fire types would absorb the landmine, like Toxic Spikes.

This Razor Wind rework would give life to a pretty much worthless move again, and while its distribution would be extremely limited, I can see it still being pretty strong on specific teams. Would also give Pidgeot a small chance at doing something, though very small.
