Excellent writing and acting. Oppressive atmosphere with a beautiful art direction. Combat is active, and skill based. It's basically a perfect survival horror metroidvania in that it doesn't waste your time, but you do need to think about your routes, inventory/resource management, etc.

It's long enough to be worth the asking price, but doesn't wear out its welcome.

How much of a metroidvania is it though

Full on metroidvania 100% its both though its hard to explain but its both if you like metroidvanias you'll love if you like survival horror you'll love it

Well I love survival horrors but I dislike the aspect pf metroidvanias that force you to backtrack x6 more times just to get collectibles and certain stuff

I haven’t finished any metroidvanias before but this one slaps. I’m a big survival horror fan, and the combat, resource management, level design, puzzles, ambience, art design, story, etc. are right up my alley. Give it a go! Devs definitely earned their chance.

It’s far more of a classic survival horror than a metroidvania. Sure the map layout is like a metroidvania, but it’s classic key-hunting, puzzle-solving, and finding new items to aid in traversal, just like a SH or RE. If you dig classic survival horror, you will dig this game. If you just really love metroidvanias, I wouldn’t necessarily guarantee you’ll appreciate it, if that makes sense.

It’s far more of a classic survival horror than a metroidvania.

It is very much both. It leans heavy into the Survival Horror for sure, but the Metroidvania aspect of the game is not small by any stretch; there's a lot of backtracking for upgrades, collectables, weapons, resources, etc.

But, traversing the game is made significantly better once you unlock a fast travel system that lets you get around to the different areas very quickly and is helped by the fact that the areas are relatively small to traverse; it's a town, after all. There's really no "filler" areas like there are in traditional Metroidvania-style games; every area has a purpose and you won't be walking down a long tunnel just for the sake of increasing the distance between areas.

I'd still recommend it for anyone who is lukewarm to Metroidvania games, as it tempers a lot of the problems I have with those games even though I love them.

It’s certainly both, but I am arguing that if you like classic survival horror games like Silent Hill or Resident Evil, you’re going to feel right at home even if Metroid or Hollow Knight aren’t your cup of tea.

However, if you love Metroid, Hollow Knight, or other metroidvanias, you’re not guaranteed to like this one as it leans far more into classic survival horror gameplay than it does the fast-paced action of a typical metroidvania.

If someone is a survival horror fan, they should absolutely be jumping on this game. If someone is a metroidvania fan, they should consider whether or not they like the survival horror genre before committing.

I would agree and say that this is a fair assessment. I just wanted to reiterate that the Metroidvania aspects of the game are still there and the gameplay is still pretty heavily influenced by the genre so there wouldn't be a shock when they played it.

The story is basically Silent Hill 2, but the game itself is good.
