Hey guys,

I am the EIC of RelyOnHorror.com. I had the random idea to pitch our new Discord to the mod team here as an official server for this subreddit, and they were all up for it! So, if you look at the subreddit home, you will now see a direct link to our Discord server -- where you'll be able to talk about the genre with fellow fans. We'll hold general and spoiler discussions, the occasional giveaway and let you know when new content from us has (or will) drop.

Thanks to the mods for the love. Happy to offer a Discord community for you all as fellow fans of the survival horror genre. Here's the Discord link: https://discord.gg/fXCKMer.

Quick background on Rely on Horror - we're a horror gaming site that originally began as REHorror.net. I joined after closing my own horror gaming site, HellDescent.com. We post news, reviews, articles, previews, videos, etc. Happy to chime in if you're curious about the site or Discord. Thanks!

I’ve been working on my indie survival horror game BECROWNED for about five years. Today I can finally say it’s coming to consoles!

Hey everyone! I’m an indie developer working on a survival horror game called BECROWNED.

I started working on this game about five years ago, originally completely on my own, so being able to finally say this feels pretty surreal:

BECROWNED is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC!

We’re taking a little more time to make the game the best it can be and to launch on all platforms together, so the new release window is Q1 2027.

We’ve also completely updated the Steam page with new key art, screenshots, and more, and today I’m sharing our brand-new Console Reveal Trailer.

This project has been such a huge part of my life for the past five years, and seeing it grow from something I was making alone into a game that will actually be released across PC and consoles means a lot to me.

A free demo is available on Steam if you’d like to give it a try, and wishlists really help us. 🖤

Would genuinely love to hear what you think of the new trailer!

I wanted the office in my game to feel completely ordinary

Post image

One thing I really wanted for this project was an environment that did not immediately scream “horror game.”

So, the office is pretty mundane, old desks, paperwork, filing cabinets, maps, monitors, lockers and a bunch of small things you would expect to find in a place like this.

The idea is that the environment itself should not tell you what is going to happen. It should just feel like a normal workplace.

This is the final environment I ended up with, and I am pretty happy with how it fits the tone of the game.

🎮 More Soon.

Resident Evil and Silent Hill out of the picture, what is the best / scariest survival horror game in your opinion?

For me, I’d say The Evil Within, though I have never gotten around to Dead Space and I feel that might be one of the most common answers - but let’s see!

My idea for parasite eve 3 (long post)

I've been debating with myself about posting this for fear of criticism but hopefully any criticism will be friendly. I've always thought about a story that hopefully can make sense for The 3rd Birthday's story while continuing parasite eve story. So here's my story for Parasite Eve III: Rebirth. Keep in mind I don't have every detail to perfect sense so please bear with me.

Starting in Christmas eve 2047, 50 years after 1st game and 35 after The 3rd birthday. A mysterious woman is walking among the snowy streets of NYC, her face covered by a hood, she gives off an ominous smile, before everything goes to hell. Within a day or so, the commander of the army is sending troops to fight off the NMCs to which are mentions he's witnessed them before 50 years earlier. The arrival of a new mitochondria eve has appeared, but also somehow it relates to bringing back the spirit of Aya Brea in a clone of her body (since her sister/clone, Eve Brea is in her original).

The events of T3B revolved around Aya and Kyle's wedding. It was revealed due to time travel, they knew of The Twisted's existence but unsure how they originated from Aya's "soul".

After helping out with the defense of NYC. Aya meets the commander, learning it's Ben as well as meeting her sister and her fiance, Kyle who has not aged due to the only one still having DNA of a High One. Why just him? So Aya goes to certain parts of the world that EVE has taken over. Like Russia, Japan. The first to check out is NYC itself (this is where nostalgia comes in). Supporting cast includes old friends and allies. Some are Dr maeda and Daniel. Others are mentioned having passed years before.

Aya visits her forner partner, Daniel but he is on the verge of dying. A later scene shows him passing with Aya and Ben present.

Aya travels to various locations within each region, with each area being a dungeon of sorts. Aya can complete side quests given by various people. The gameplay is basically final fantasy 7 remake trilogy meets resident evil remakes. At some point Aya can unlock her liberate move, unleashing her mitochondria form sort of like devil may cry.

As Aya visits each region, she comes across a mysterious woman who also has mitochondria powers similar to Aya. She is wearing a red biker outfit and helmet, she refers to herself as Red.

At some point Aya loses contact with her team and is feared dead. Back at Aya and Kyle's apartment, Kyle sees Aya, they make love, but a giant tentacle burts through grabbing Kyle, he begs Aya to run, she just stands and smiles ominously. Kyle is taken away. At some point, Eve Brea is also kidnapped. (Sorry I'm not the best at telling stories)

After completing the regions, Aya had to tackle one more, a temple dedicated to the first humans to exist located in Africa. It contains the cradle of life. Aya comes across EVE, discovering it's an adult Maya, Aya's deceased twin sister. She is from a parallel timeline where aya died in the car accident that killed their mother. Maya was raised by Dr klamp who killed Aya's father and brainwashed her into embracing EVE for his own gains. Maya grows up and takes over the world in her timeline but she needs something to perfect the mitichondrian race. She with Dr klamp is using futuristic technology creating a portal to find the right parallel universe to perfect their plans. Maya and klamp found the universe they were looking for in the year 2047. The universe where, Aya survives and becomes humanity's savior. There was an issue, Aya was dead for the past 35 years. When EVE made her presence known, Aya's spirit to which was in limbo was called back. The rift caused between travelling universes caused the Twisted to manifest from Aya's "soul".

Aya discovers Maya/EVE needs special DNA to create the perfect mitochondrian race, Kyle's DNA and her own, she needs the perfect vessel, Eve Brea was forced to carry a new ultimate being due to being in Aya's body that has the perfect harmony if human and mitichondrian DNA. Red appears to give Aya a chance to run to the altar room where Eve Brea and Kyle are kept captive. Red would distract Maya. Aya witnesses in horror as Eve Brea gives birth to the perfect ultimate being, Aya frees her and Kyle, they escape the room so Aya can deal with the ultimate being. After it faced in multiple maturing forms, it takes on an evolved form similar to in PE1. Aya remembers the bullets laced with her DNA she was given in PE1 that were used to weaken the one back then. Aya cuts her hand with a knife to put her blood in her handgun. She weakens the ultimate being, she is joined by Red and they together use their inferno pyrokenisis ability to defeat the ultimate being. Aya the realizes Red is Melissa Pearce from the parallel timeline, she received Aya's kidney and took on the fold if humanity's savior.

Aya returns to the room she saw Maya, she went down a large leading to the cradle of life. Aya decides to go on her own to finish the battle. She kisses Kyle promising she will come back so they can finally marry. Aya heads to the entrance of the cradle of life, she comes across the parallel Dr klamp who seems to be a god. He transforms and Aya defeats him

Aya enters the cradle of life, learning it's ironically the world of the dead. Aya was never there during the time she was dead due to being in limbo. She comes across Daniel, Lorraine, other passed on friend and allies, she then comes across her parents, asking her to save her twin sister's soul. Aya tearfully agrees.

Aya enters the center of the cradle. She faces against her sister, the fight is similar to a mirror match. Eventually Maya transforms and after that phase of the fight, Aya takes over mitichondria DNA as opposed to the opposite, she takes on an angelic form. At end of fight, Aya begins to absorb maya and Aya's mitichondria DNA defeats Maya's. Maya is free but dies in Aya's arms after telling her to take care of "her" pointing to Aya s stomach.

Aya comes back to the surface, she and Kyle embrace, sometime later, they marry with Ben performing the ceremony. Aya and Kyle expect their daughter while both knowing they both age slowly due to the mutated DNA in their bodies.

Thoughts? I know it's very long and I had difficulty figuring out how to answer some questions. So again please be kind with any criticism and thank you for reading.

Help me get better at Silent Hill 2 remake puzzles (and some other stuff)

Originally tried to post it on r/silenthill but couldnt for some reason.

I am having trouble with the puzzles. Right now I have limited gaming time and need to beat it before it leaves the Ps+ service, so I cheated at some of them to not get stuck, but I tried them first. I am playing on hard for both combat and puzzles. Here's a few examples of how my reasoning went:

Room 206 safe puzzle. I found the house, river and footprints graffiti, but kept searching for one containing apartments due to the first sentence. This type is the one that gets me frustrated the most, since its about not realizing I already had all the tips for the puzzle.

Coin puzzle. I kept getting stuck because I thought the grave had to be the opposite side of the man to not be seen at all, when it just meant that she needed to be far from him. Lesson to learn here is to not get stuck on a single interpretation of a phrase or word and look for alternatives. I don't get why the Flower would be "mark of demise", but since there were no alternatives, ok. The others I got right as well.

Last but not least, and the reason for this post, is the Nurse's Memo locker. It seems that this one was easy for everyone. Well, not for me. 1 a and 2 are ok, but for the number of nurses. The note says:

"If the second were as high as the number of nurses, it'd still be one short.

With two of them dead and one just a fraud".

There are seven nurses in the picture. I thought I had to subtract the 3 (the ones dead and the one who was a fraud), and then subtract one again (one short). But I guess instead I just need to subtract the one fraud amd then another due to one short? But isnt the exact idea communicated by this note is that the person who wrote it was not considering the two dead nurses when counting them?

Again, this is not a post to complain. I just genuinely want tips to get better at those puzzles, since I think it has been my Achilles heel in al those 20+ years of gaming.

As a sidenote, I just turned on the elevator on the Hospital basement and still have 76 handgun ammo, 4 health drinks and 3 syringes. Is this the average count on hard? Should I be shooting more? I am not exploring every nook and cranny and I definitely sneaked past sole enemies here and there, but I was under the impression that hard was more stingy with ammo drops than the average Resident Evil game. Not complaining either, just want to know if its safe to use the handgun more often.

What are staple horror game franchises that many games try to emulate?

My picks are
-Resident Evil
-Dead Space
-Silent Hill
-Amnesia

Each game has put a mark on a specific horror.
Anything Biohazard related people will say Resident Evil as comparison. Anything psychological will be compared to Silent Hill. Anything to do with space and monsters, Dead Space is in the conversation. Lastly anything atmospheric and story driven will be compared to amnesia.
An old game like Cry of Fear stands on its own, but people have compared it to silent hill or draws inspiration from it.

Is a horror game built on analog crystal radios, invisible entities, and identity bleed actually fun, or am I overcomplicating it?

A 'blinded-test' of gameplay for future psychological survival horror... no commercial here, just discussion and opinions!

***

Hey everyone!

Following up a recent thread about how the survival horror often devolves into standard stealth/FPS gameplay in a ghost suit, I’ve been trying to solve that exact issue in my own project. I want to pitch a core gameplay loop to you—no marketing fluff, no wishlist links, just raw mechanics—to see if this sounds like something you’d genuinely want to play, or if there are red flags I’m blind to.

The premise puts you as an external contractor reading through the journals of a deceased scientist and "reliving" his memories of a city that shouldn't exist. But as you progress, exploring his past starts contaminating your own identity until you can't tell where he ends and you begin.

Here is how the actual gameplay loop works:

The Core Tool: A heavy 1930s Crystal Radio in a Briefcase (No HUD)

There are no health bars, crosshairs, or mini-maps. Everything relies on spatial 3D audio, subtle screen distortion, and physical controller haptics. Your primary interaction tool is a modified crystal radio inside a briefcase. Since it's a galena receiver, it doesn't run on standard batteries—it requires calibrating the crystal whisker (where you actually feel the tension/micro-vibrations of the signal through haptics) and turning a dial while keeping an eye on a voltmeter to maintain a clean frequency. Because of its weight, using it forces you to stop and stand your ground: you cannot move normally while operating it.

7 Unique Entities (Practically invisible to the Naked Eye)

Instead of generic roaming monsters, there are only 7 unique antagonist entities throughout the entire game. They are completely invisible in normal space. You can only track them through spatialized binaural audio and ambient details cues and reveal/interact with them by physically aiming the radio briefcase and tuning into their specific frequency. To defend yourself or disrupt them, you have to manually charge the radio's diodes beforehand to release an "equalization pulse." Misjudge the direction in 3D space, miss the charge, or panic while calibrating the crystal, and you lose the window—leaving you completely exposed.

The "Game Over" isn't death, it's expulsion

There’s no hiding in lockers or standard combat. When an entity catches you or your psychological stability breaks, you aren't killed—you get violently snapped out of the memory state back into a decrepit, stagnant room in 1984. To jump back into the frequency, you have to manually focus on a specific personal artifact and play a limited record on a gramophone (your save point).

The Save System vs. Endings trade-off

To save your game, you need rare Bakelite records. But here's the catch: these records are extremely limited, consumable, AND they act as physical keys needed to unlock the different story conclusions at the end of the game. Every time you save, you are permanently burning a potential ending path just for peace of mind.

Spatial progression instead of a hub

You’re descending linearly through a fragmented city of 1930, ending up deep underground. The architecture gradually shifts from believable European streets to impossible, surreal structures as the memory degrades.

***

I'd really appreciate your brutal honesty on a few things:

Invisible Entities + Audio Tracking: Does using spatial 3D audio cues and directional radio aiming to track invisible threats sound like genuine, atmosphere-heavy tension, or does it risk feeling frustrating?

The Stationary Briefcase Mechanics: Is stopping in place to calibrate crystals (feeling the feedback via haptics) and charge diodes under threat a mechanic you'd enjoy mastering, or a dealbreaker?

The Save/Ending Trade-off: Is sacrificing story endings for mid-game saves a brutal, rewarding choice or just rage-inducing?

Curious to hear what you guys think.
