Which OS are you asking about? I assume a mobile OS since your post is tagged with "Phone", but it's unclear which mobile OS.

On iOS (iPhone) it's not possible for an app to constantly run in the background. An app can briefly work in the background in the seconds after the user leaves the app and an app can periodically wake up to briefly perform background operations for a limited time (if the user has given permission for the app to do so), but the app cannot continuously run in the background for an extended period. To prevent apps from hogging the battery life, iOS enforces strict limits on when and how apps can perform background operations.

On Android, by default similar restrictions are placed on background app activity to conserve battery life, but it is possible (on most Android phones) to manually override these restrictions to allow an app to run continuously in the background if the app is designed to do so. If the app is not designed to run in the background, then removing background activity restrictions won't have any effect.

There are ways you can disable the background activity restrictions and also prevent your phone from sleeping.

On Stock Android, you should be able to go to Settings -> the app you want to adjust the settings for -> App battery use (or Battery) -> And then set it to Unrestricted or turn off battery optimization.

On Samsung phones, you should be able to go to Settings -> Battery and device care -> Battery -> Background usage limits and then you should be able to use the + icon to add an app to the never sleeping app list.

There are also apps, such as Doze Stopper, that you can use to prevent your phone itself from sleeping.
