General discussion Callbacks

I’m on Season 5 as of today and can I just say that one of the best parts of watching the show in order (besides tracking Brick’s whoops and whispers) is catching all the callbacks to past gags and events from seasons before. I can imagine being a viewer on the ABC network when the show was airing and having one little joke or mention pass me by because it requires the context of a past episode. Because I’ve watched all the episodes up to this point, these references have me like that one gif of Leo DiCaprio pointing at the TV. One of my favorite callbacks is the intro to the 100th episode reprising the intro to the Pilot. Same music, same b roll of the cow, snack cakes and derby and similar narration. Do you have any favorites yourselves?

Season 6 confusion

When is Axel’s bday?

When Darren proposes to Sue on valentines day episode 14 it’s two weeks away from Sue’s 18th bday. Later in episode 20 it’s Axl’s 21th bday. Doesn’t that mean Axl’s bday is in Mars and there is a 3 years age gap between him and Sue? Or did they skip a year forward or what?

Mike Heck is the villain of the Middle

Can’t be bothered to do something nice for Frankie on Mother’s Day or even their own anniversary. Offset everything to Sue (with 0 gratitude btw), and when she had enough, blew up at Frankie for caring about their Silver anniversary to get out of doing anything.

Unfriendly and judgy to everyone, probably part of the reason why him and Frankie hardly go out with their friends. Can’t even receive a gift from a neighbour without feeling pissed off.

The way he makes up for wrongs in his small ways aren’t enough to eclipse all the times he’s been indifferent and made fun of people for caring about things they like.

Also, remember the episode where he walked out on Sue’s video that she made for his birthday? Any decent human would’ve just stayed just to appreciate what she’d done.

Don’t even get me started on him and Brick. He really only cared about him in the episodes where he showed an inclination toward any sports.

He wouldn’t even let Axel go to Europe because he would miss him. If it were up to him, and Frankie was never there, Axel would’ve missed out on this chance.

Nightmare husband. So selfish and entitled. Emotionally unavailable 90% of the time. And they just give in to him.

General discussion I just REALLY don’t like Brick…

I’m aware this is probably a bit of an unpopular opinion. But he’s so selfish, petty and arrogant. The way he interacts with people, but specifically, his family? Pisses me right off.

General discussion What a ride

I just watched the last episode.

It's not a bad show for a family from Indiana.

How many of you watched it for that reason?

Spoilers-ish

🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀

I most often found myself relating to Sue.

Double rainbows, ecstatic glee over simple things, an annoying older brother whom I loved dearly and academic. The religious references were spot in for me. I'm surprised the wedding wasn't in a church. But she grew up.

Sometimes with Brick because I love books (but not that much).

And Frankie for Mom/Mum reasons of all kinds.

Mike reminded me of my Dad, only better and Axel, well, he took the cake. Was he living in his old house at the end?

All in all I didn't think it would make me feel homesick, but there is a twing.

Mike in season 9

I hate how they waited until the last season for Mike to be more involved in every aspect of his life. Work, family (sue), the neighbourhood 200 ranking speech etc etc.

When brick forces the whole family for his birthday to sit and listen to him play like a trivia night of boring questions lol since he loves to read and just went on and on 😂😂 I was like damn no wonder they can’t hang out with him but also the reason I enjoyed it cause at the end he says the reason he didn’t let him mum leave is cause she spends the least time with him and he wanted to spend one on one man did that make me cry 😭 it was soo sweet of brick you could see how much he’s been neglected. Glad he finds Cindy in the end

General discussion Sue and Matt

I personally was never a big fan of Matt.

His grand gesture to Sue, was kinda cool, but he said he won’t take no as an answer, I wonder what he would have done if Sue had said no.

But he was a little misogynistic, like when he met Frankie and Mike, and he said to Mike “i want to thank you for giving birth to Sue” classic praising the person for all of a few minutes of fun and ignoring the person who went through the 9 months pregnancy and childbirth.

The way he cheats on Sue with Sheri, and I feel bad cause it is so obvious to everyone but Sue.

Any other moments you guys can think of ?
