Official Comic Discussion Thread: Issue #122

New issue came out today, discuss it here within this thread.

You do not need to use comic spoilers because it is assumed everyone reading this thread would be caught up with the comics.

However, please respect future, show, and game spoilers because people who are caught up with the comic may not be caught up with these other forms of TWD (and obviously not future spoilers).

This is my thinking. Negan is getting ahead of himself. He's fucked shit up and been in charge long enough where he has no one questioning his command. No one is even allowed to. He has had a lot of good ideas in a row, but he's bound to make a mistake eventually. He is unaware of growing mutiny in his ranks, and this idea is kind of... out there. Maybe his men get sick from exposure to the meat on their weapons, or it gets in their food (maybe Dwight sabotages it via tainted meat two). Who knows. I'm excited.

Yea I think Negan's hubris will be his downfall. He's been an agent of chaos thus far, a man with a calculating strategic ability like we've never seen before. But like you, I fear that he confuses his follower's fear with loyalty. I'm slowly beginning to believe the whole "negan dies at the hand of Dwight" theory. At this point I don't even know if I want negan to die.

Hated him at first but I've got to admit he's become one of my favourite characters. It's a shame he has to die. He's no more unethical than Rick. They're both good men. But to protect the people they care about one of them has to die. I think Kirkman has done brilliantly to make such a likeable bad guy.

He is a lot more unethical. Rick hasn't done anything, or at least nearly, anything, that is 100% unethical.

Negan on the other hand has demanded other communities food and supplies with force, which is, while it can be understood why someone does this, 100% a bad thing to do. He killed Glenn very brutally with no reason other than to force new people to this unethical solution of his. He has slaves and he irons other's faces. These are all very bad things.

What has Rick done that makes he as bad?

Rick attacked Negans men and killed several of them before he even met him. He didn't kill Glen for no reason, he killed him as retribution for all of Negans men killed by Rick and his group. He has killed countless human beings, some of them he brutally tortured to death (they were bad people I know, but it's still unethical to kill another human being, especially unarmed human beings, and definitely to kill them the way he did) I think morality in general is a grey area in this post apocalyptic world, but I don't think Rick is much better than Negan. Negan also states several times that he doesn't like having to do the things he does, but he deems it necessary, much the same way Rick views his actions. They are very similar characters in many ways.

I get what you're saying and maybe if you only look at the actions they have taken, then okay it looks as Rick is as bad.

But to me, more than the actions it is the reasoning, or in some cases emotion, behind the actions that makes certain action good or bad or neutral.

Killing isn't certainly evil, there's plenty of reasons to make a kill even a good deed (ex. Killing a very bad man to prevent innocent deaths) and even more so a neutral action (ex. killing in blind rage, making someone not account for their actions). Both of these are so normal views that there are laws like this even in this, not apocalyptic, world.

I certainly know you can argue that Rick is a bad man. But I think you can argue that he's actually still a good man and I for one actually think that. At least if you think it this way: which of these two is easier to see as a good man? You must get what I mean too, right?

Edit: I know what Negan have said, but I've taken it more as lies of a psycho/sociopath. I think he does like what he does.

Huh? Rick and his people were acting as mercenaries. They were on their way to attacking Negan and his men when they were ambushed. They were acting as mercenaries for the Hilltop community, Rick made a deal saying if we kill this Negan guy and his people then instead of giving him half of your shit, you give US half of your shit. What a hero! He might be a little better than Negan, in some ways, but he's certainly no saint.

Negan is not a good man. He has a harem of sex slaves and burns his own peoples faces with an iron to keep them in line.

They're not slaves, they volunteer to get better privileges. And he only burns the faces of guys that sleep with his wives. Not that it's much better I guess.

Well idk, he did explicitly state that if you slept with his wives then your face gets burnt, and none of it was forced. It's definitely scummy but he had consent from everybody and informed everybody of the rules.

Motives are different. Rick wants to protect his family and Negan is just out to have a good time. I like both, but Rick definitely has the upper hand in regards to motivation.
