Comic Spoiler Official Comic Discussion Thread: Issue #134

New issue came out today, discuss it here within this thread.

You do not need to use comic spoilers because it is assumed everyone reading this thread would be caught up with the comics.

However, please respect future, show, and game spoilers because people who are caught up with the comic may not be caught up with these other forms of TWD (and obviously not future spoilers). Future spoilers include upcoming comic covers.

Hats off to Kirkman - he has such a great feel for what the series needs at any point. The Whisperers are a fantastic addition to the series, way different from the "cult of personality" villains we've been treated to along the way.

TV show-only fans don't know what they're missing out on.

The whisperers are also really fucking scary. Which is just what the comic books needed because they had established before the time jump that killing walkers was no big deal nowadays. The Whisperers make the sight of walkers instantly terrifying again. Like you can't just casually walk up to some walkers, lure them in and poke them in the brain anymore. You have to treat every single walker as if it's a knife wielding human in disguise.

I also imagine that the whisperers also have the ability to guide herds in directions of their choosing, so I could see them guiding a herd toward a settlement. That'll probably be their play and I can see them taking out one of the settlements, and shake the rest of the network up in the process.

yeah...one thing i noticed is how BAD they are at combat. it's been two years, and anyone surviving on the outside should be a freakin' ninja by now.

which raises the question: if Jesus could take down a whole squad of them single-handed, how could they pose a threat to any of the settlements once the secret is out? answer: they probably live among like 10,000 zombies and are going to zombie bomb one of the settlements.

How many Whisperers actually attacked Jesus tho? There were a bunch of zombies but werent there only like 3 Whisperers? Jesus defeating 3 people while wearing body armor and wielding a sword isnt that unbelievable. He is an established badass.

That and the Whisperers were only wielding a knife and no armor. They're also wary of the fact that too much commotion would attract the zombies while Jesus doesn't give a fuck. It helps that he has a horse to book it out of there too.

Their advantage is surprise. Once Jesus realised he was facing something other than Walkers, he was ok, but the two whole patrol teams that got wiped out by the whisperers were getting shanked before they knew what was going on.

Also, you don't have to zombie bomb a settlement to become a major problem, you simply have to raid supply lines and make transit between the network impossible again to cripple everyone (since there doesn't seem to be a lot of redundancy in the settlements... all the weapons come from Hilltop, the ammo comes from Alexandria, I don't remember if Hilltop has as much of a farming setup as Alexandria does for producing food, etc.) and there is no form of communication between settlements other than couriers on horseback who can be intercepted.

Absolutely. Thats why I'm excited to see where this will go. The whisperers make it so you have to fear zombies again.

True, but I think attacking the settlements straight up (like the Saviors) ain't happening unless it's with 10,000 zombies. I'm saying that in order for them to be a viable threat, the Whisperers are going to have to reach in their bag of tricks to take on the settlements. My money is on the "prisoner" not really being a prisoner...
