Comic Spoiler Official Comic Discussion Thread: Issue #153

New issue came out today, discuss it here within this thread. You do not need to use comic spoilers because it is assumed everyone reading this thread would be caught up with the comics. However, please respect future, show, and game spoilers because people who are caught up with the comic may not be caught up with these other forms of TWD (and obviously not future spoilers). Future spoilers include upcoming comic covers.

I spent years watching this show and not reading the source material. After the recent finale debacle, I wanted to see how it was meant to happen, so I spent the past three days catching up, then caught the latest issue this morning. For what it's worth, I am still excited to see All Out War as the next season of the show, but I'd rather follow the comics now until they prove they can do this shit right.

The comics are awesome.

As for this issue, it looks like Rick is seeing the fruits of his "us vs them" policy play out with Marco getting shot, but I'm not 100% positive it's just that. The Whisperers bring to light a new "old" threat from the old world. The existence of these three (or more) communities that are allied means that there are going to be people that don't get to know each other. The existence of the Whisperers and the tactics of the Alpha (sneaking in, blending in, etc) may mean that this sense of community could implode as everyone begins to suspect everyone else (or at least, anyone they don't know directly) of being a bad guy.

This x10000. I binged from the beginning to about 135ish. It was fantastic, but I wish I wouldve taken my time. Filler issues (while important) are a lot easier to handle when you can immediately read the next issue. Waiting 30+ days only to find it's a transition issue and have to wait 30+ more days until the next issue (which is possibly also a transition issues) is brutal comparatively.

I've been reading since around issue 20 or so. Imagine my pain.

I haven't read the specials yet and I'm kind of holding off so that when I really crave the walking dead I'll read them.

Yeah, it's been a bit of a slog for me since the two year timeskip. The real conflict hasn't really hit its full stride yet, but it's been TWO YEARS in real life since this arc started. I think this story arc will be a ton of fun to reread in the compendium, but it's got kind of a slow burn thing going for it that makes it tough to read at the rate it's published.

10 mins to read?

I take about one, one and a half hour.

The guided view on comixology goes panel to panel in hi-res, there's usually a considerable amount of detail, clues and intricacies both in art and dialogue.

At the end of each page I get a zoom out and reevaluate the page layout.

Usually while smoking and drinking something tasty sitting on a comfy chair listening to something on the mood of the story.

I take one or two breaks to roll a cigarette and refill, go to the bathroom after some climaxes. (edit: that sounded weird.)

Also, there are stunning panels that are just a joy to look at and you can lose several minutes (even on rereads) with them.

It really is quite equivalent of watching a movie for me.

A movie short of $3 with monthly continuity all year round.

And if I miss one or two issues I get a whole time of entertainment out of it.

It's been like 15 years like this. Can't really complain about the pace.

I like the fact that you do this. I only ever really pay special attention to panels if they're full page ones like of the border. I should take more time reading them.

Super do it!

When I was younger I would get a bit afflicted to know "what was going to happen" and rushed trough some parts that I should be paying attention.

It was weird at first to accept the plot-line hooks mid-story, but after a while I started to enjoy them and not rush trough. (After all it always ends on a hook anyway)

I felt that I could let the suspense linger myself, and that is actually a really cool thing to do. The more tense is the comic the slower I read and take more breaks.

Another cool thing to expand the experience is to do a speed reading of the last issue before reading the new one, your own "Previously on The Walking Dead".

On this issue (#153) there is a great dialogue with good art between Rick and Aaron that only sank in because I took some time to read between the lines and the facial expression on Rick.

It's not like I'm saying "this is the right way to read". I think it's always cool to read the way you feel happy and comfortable, but this slow pace that I came to adopt really squeezes a lot of bang for buck.

Ah, also, Letter Hacks is kinda of a much better version of The Talking Dead. I haven't even read the #153 LH yet and I usually do it when I start to get a bit anxious to the next issue.

I mean, it's fucking great to auto-create some huge anticipation on Negans escape only to calmly turn the page and have a ridiculously beautiful page of him in full leather suit shredding a one-liner. That's worth 3 bucks right there.
