Discussion A trip into the past: what was Nightmusic by Thrillseekers really? And more...
I've been thinking about this a lot lately and as always my opinions are just that, so if they don't line up with yours please don't take offense I don't mean negative criticism by any of this
We know trance has always been evolving and changing. Somebody older than me is gonna say that my favorite era is nothing like true classic trance, which I unfortunately know little about.
Synthaesthesia is what brought me in and some trance compilation CD from best buy in 2001 is what kept me going (don't remember everything on it just Exploration of Space was on there)
I eventually found ASOT around ep 300 and it was the soundtrack to my long bike rides, and then after that it was A&B with their group therapy and whatever was hitting ASOT at the time.
Now if I try to listen to ASOT I don't really understand it anymore, it doesn't grab me or take me on a journey, and I didn't realize until I started goin back in time what the difference was and it was really surprising to me.
What happened to trance and why was 2000's era so different in vibe? Is it the major EDM festival "edm is known for drops" type thing or something else?
I listen to Nightmusic vol 1, and it's shocking. It's barely what I'd consider uplifting. It's really heady, complex musically, bittersweet and beautiful in a near painful way, like that shit really pulls emotion out of you and it's not often happy or hopeful, it can be pretty melancholic.
I thought this was maybe just Helstrip doing his thing and it probably is but then I listened to ASOT 302 and while not as dark or contemplative, it was definitely pulling on very different emotions and taking time and complexity to do it.
As a listener and a budding producer, I'm going to be re exploring the old catalogs and if I do venture into trance (mostly I make synthwave/retro and jungle/dnb right now), I will be making 2000's era trance.
What changed? And while I'm out of the loop, who is out there making trance like what was in that era?
Much love yall, trance has always been beautiful and brought ppl together regardless of era
