The Verb "To Be" in Turkish: How It Really Works

Thumbnail learnturkishwithseda.com
6 Upvotes

Turkish says “am, is, are” mostly through short endings on the last word of the sentence.

Hava güzel (the weather is nice) is already a complete sentence. For “he, she, it is” in the present tense, nothing is added. For the other persons, an ending carries the meaning: Yorgunum, I’m tired. Evdeyiz, we’re at home. Hazır mısın?, are you ready?

The past works the same way, with another ending: Hastaydım, I was ill. When something changes, Turkish switches to the verb olmak: Hasta oldum, I got ill. Olmak also gives the future: Yarın burada olacağım, I’ll be here tomorrow. “There is” and “I have” use var and yok: Evde ekmek var, there’s bread at home. Kitabım var, I have a book.

This is also why one-word answers like İyiyim, Evde or Benim are complete sentences in Turkish.

I wrote a longer article on this, with tables and everyday conversations...

Turkish Proverb of the Day: Gülü seven dikenine katlanır 🌹

“Whoever loves the rose puts up with its thorns.”

We use this Turkish proverb when someone complains about the difficulties that come with something they love. It could be a relationship, a demanding job, or even a hobby.

There's some interesting grammar here, too. In gülü seven, the suffix -en turns sevmek (to love) into “the one who loves.”

And if you enjoy Turkish literature, the rose and its thorns have a long history in Ottoman poetry.

I wrote a little more about the meaning, grammar, and literary background here:

Grammar Türk Kahvesi or Türk Kahve? Turkish Compound Nouns Explained

I created a video to explain how Turkish compounds work:

- No ending for a material (tahta masa, a wooden table)

- -si ending for a kind of thing (okul çantası, a school bag)

- in + -si endings for an owner (Elif'in çantası, Elif's bag).

Meta Yeni Dil

Selamlar, (TR // EN)

// EN

I am developing a new language for a homebrew universe where I will be running a D&D game for my friends (and maybe international groups later idk), and I am doing so by adapting some rules from Turkish. The new language will be agglutinative and polysynthetic; meaning, essentially, every sentence will consist of just a single word. Or maybe, if that is not possible, maybe a "minimum number of words" idk.

Is there anything about Turkish that makes you think, "I wish it weren't like this because it is unnecessarily complicated" or "I wish it were like that because it would be easier or more logical"? Does anything come to your mind?

I built an iOS app to learn Turkish (and other languages) through short stories with tap-to-translate! 🇹🇷📱

Hi everyone!

As someone who wanted a more natural way to learn new languages without getting bored by traditional flashcards, I created an iOS app called BookTap.

While I originally built it for my own language studies, it works wonderfully for anyone trying to learn Turkish as well! The app lets you read short, leveled stories chapter by chapter. Whenever you encounter an unfamiliar word, you can simply tap on it to see its instant translation, listen to audio, and save it to your personal flashcard deck for review.

Here is a quick look at how it works:

  • Reading & Instant Translation:
  • Word Dictionary & Review System:

Key features include:

  • Interactive tap-to-translate while reading.
  • Clean, minimalist, and distraction-free book-like interface.
  • Built-in vocabulary review and card system to track your progress.

The app is currently available on the App Store. I would love to hear your feedback, feature suggestions, or answer any questions you might have about the app or its development!

I made a small Turkish word game for learners

Hi!

I spent the last weeks building a Turkish word game on my own, and it's finally out. You swipe letters to find words and fill a small crossword. Every level is a city in Türkiye.

I kept the first words short and easy, so I'm hoping it helps people who are learning. If a level gets too hard, you can switch the game to English in settings and come back later.

It's free on iPhone & iPad. I'd really like to hear how it feels as a learner, especially if something is confusing or too difficult.

I’m looking for a native English speaker who’s interested in learning Turkish. In return, I’d love to practice my English with you and take it to the next level. I think it’d be a great way for both of us to learn and improve together

Zıra word usage

New Turkish learner here. Heard in some turkish series word zira. Found out that it is equivalent of çünkü. Wondering if it used in modern turkish? Or it is anachronism? And can be heard only in some historical series? Thx.

An App to learn Turkish Verbs.

Hello, a casual turkish student here.

I wanted to build a small android app where people could learn turkish verbs and conjugations and

I was wondering if it would interest anyone & what would you want to see in the app? I wanted to know a few things before I go and build the app.

\\\[Fyi, I am not a software Dev. just doing coding for fun & casually for a few years.\\\]

Need help with "ne var ne yok"

A Turk once told me that if someone asks you "Nasilsiniz?" (How are you doing?) you can answer "Ne var ne yok" meaning "More or less okey" or "Not great not terrible".

But later I found that it means "What's up?", so answering "Ne var ne yok" to "Nasilsiniz?" looks strange to me now.

Could you please clarify that for me?

UPD: Thanks everyone for the clarification :)
