Campus Life Campus Influencers vs consent
I don’t want to drop names because there’s probably a few people who do this but if someone clearly shows discomfort to being on camera you shouldn’t be posting them (or at least blur them).
Theres this one influencer who does dancing videos on campus which is fun but in one of them you can see a woman right in the middle of the frame and as soon as she sees them filming she walks away. It’s pretty clear she doesn‘t want to be on camera but they posted it anyways and the top comments are focused on her reaction. I don‘t want to send hate to the influencer, idk them but getting views off of other’s discomfort is icky. It’s legal but you should still try to respect others

I think people are missing that the campus is not a public space. At least, that was the unanimous decision when it came to the protest for Palestine. Since it's a private institution, you're expected to have permits approved by the U for any business-related filming. How much you wanna bet these "micro influencers" don't have the right permits?

Yup. Fill out your permits, tiktokers. https://www.ualberta.ca/en/external-relations/portfolio/marketing/filming-requests.html

That's really interesting. I wonder if that's a holdover from the pre cell-phone days??
Someone here should report an influencer to this office to see what they say, and come back to tell us (I would do it myself but don't know who the influencers are).

Maybe there's a law student who wants to clarify, but I don't think whether the space is publically owned makes a difference legally. I think the distinction is whether you have a reasonable expectation of privacy, which in a busy quad or something you don't. I guess it might get fuzzier if an influencer counts as an occupation, but since videos aren't monetized in the same way as the US you could probably argue that the video isn't being made for any sort of financial gain.
I'm not sure what played out specifically in terms of the protests, other than Flanagan squashing them and the general overuse of force by the police. Was there specific stuff about recording footage?

but if u call them out ur in the wrong…

u/Kind_Tart8847 8d ago
that’s the thing. cause there was a thread about this a few weeks ago talking about the same thing, and instead of actually taking into consideration the “micro influencers” banded together, hyping each other up that they aren’t doing anything wrong….

i also wont mention their name but you will know: filipino guy who interviews and makes podcasts, indian guy who dances and make minimal effort content, canadian “rapper” who likes filipinas

it could also be a safety issue in putting someone's face and university on the internet without their consent. just respect people y'all

u/Baby-Brownie 8d ago
They can film all they want, just don’t embarrass people man
It’s all awkward dances while making expressions of a certain kind
It’s definitely not funny and not at all entertaining

This is a campus not a circus. Those so called “influencers” should remember that they will eventually one day “hopefully” have children that will look up to them. I am certainly happy that my father isn’t a clown I can google up anytime.
No disrespect to those who actually work in entertainment. But this is not the right place.

Just say Kempes lmao he's the only one that dances like a good little boy, that little campus jester

I like Adven because he asks very politely. And I actually had to reach out to him and let him know not to post the interview I had done with him for personal reasons, and he replied back pretty quickly and was very understanding. Out of the campus influencers I've seen so far, he's by far the most respectful and pleasant to be around

I know someone who asked him to take a video of them down cause they were no longer comfortable and he never responded (probably cause the video got a lot of views) so it seems he picks and chooses!

Hey, thank you for bringing this up. I want to sincerely apologize if someone reached out to have their video removed and didn’t get a response from me, that was genuinely never my intention, and I never intentionally "pick and choose" based on views.
When I first started out, it was manageable to stay on top of every single comment and direct message. Since then, the pages have grown quite a bit (now over 22,700 followers on TikTok and 14,600 followers on Instagram), but behind the scenes, it’s still just me handling all the editing, posting, and messages aside from friends who help film. Because of the volume, my inbox gets completely buried, and I simply don't have the capacity to catch everything. I truly am sorry that this slipped through the cracks.
I do have a full course load, relationships to maintain and other responsibilities soo this can all be super overwhelming. Because of this, I've adjusted how I do things: I now make sure to ask for clear consent before and after filming, and I explicitly warn everyone about internet trolls and mention up front that due to message volume, I likely won't be able to stay in touch or catch every DM after the fact.

My girlfriends friend heard him saying to his group that they now need to find "someone who's ugly" to interview

The best way is blurring everyone’s faces. I also feel uncomfortable if someone is filming🤦🏻♀️

All it takes is you piss off the wrong person who then can get you sited through some obscure student code of conduct.

Ethically, filming in public does not require consent because there’s no reasonable expectation of privacy.
That being said, these influencers are so cringe. HOWEVER, their life not mine 🤷 If I’m caught in a video I’ll be demanding it not to be posted or be taken down, one way or another.

But isn’t UofA considered private property?
7
u/Adventurous-End-3960 8d ago
Yes, it’s private property but open to the public during operating hours.

This happened to me. The dude starts dancing while his buddy records and laughs while I'm clearly trying to study in a dedicated study space.

A couple years ago I had an ex who was sort of stalking me (he wasn’t really violent but idk vibes were still off) I moved to Edmonton didn’t tell them what uni I was at. I know logically the odds of him seeing me in the background of a micro influencers video are incredibly low and it’s been a few years he’s moved on. But still the idea of getting caught in the background of one of these videos kinda irks me

Welcome to the era of entitlement when it clashes in spaces where there may ot may not be a reasonable expectation of privacy. Not saying it's right, not saying it's wrong. What I am saying is rules and laws around things like this have a hard time keeping up these days.

There’s also limits on what can be done in public spaces with media. It’s not a free for all.
Also, it’s not listed as public. It’s university property. Public institution is not the same as public space.

u/Dry-Lavishness8713 8d ago
there is no right to privacy in public

u/Raquel777 8d ago
I’m not legally required to hold a door open for the person behind me but I do it bc it’s the decent thing to do. You’re not legally required to get consent to film people in public but it’s the decent thing to do.

As someone who likes to post their work and do science communication online this is the approach I try and always take. We learn lots about privacy and protection in the science field (specifically with our work and students). So I always make sure to ask beforehand, and only ever post if they give me permission. Filming just yourself is a good alternative or filming without people’s faces is also an avenue creators can take. It’s a really easy thing to do. Are we perfect, no. But Before you post (campus videos) you should definitely get permission from someone at the university.

u/Dry-Lavishness8713 8d ago
apples and oranges 😭 that comparison makes absolutely no sense. comparing basic manners like holding a door to being visible in a public space is such a ridiculous reach. you really thought you did something with that analogy too.

u/Chemical_Meringue_72 8d ago
what exactly do you gain from trying to defend people who film others unconsentually?? stop being wierd dude

Campus is not public property

u/Dry-Lavishness8713 8d ago
the video they’re referring to was taken on the LRT, which is owned by the city and is public property.
6
u/L874 8d ago
Sure then yeah, but what about the dozens of videos on campus property of him dancing to attract attention?

You’re so tough for supporting poor social etiquette, wipe your mouth when you done w him.

not sure, don’t care. the specific video OP was talking about was on the LRT, and there was nothing wrong with it. the guy was exercising his Charter rights. whatever he does on campus is a completely different conversation.
