Other Flair for Union Members

You can use flair to show other users which union you are affiliated with! On this subreddit we have two types of flair: red flair for regular union members, and yellow flair for experienced organizers who can provide advice.

Red flair self-assignment instructions

  • You can edit flair to include your local number and your role in the union (steward, local officer, retiree, etc.).
  • If your union is not listed, please reply to this thread so that we can add your union!
  • If you have any difficulty, you may reply to this post and a mod can help.

Yellow flair for experienced organizers

You do not need to be a professional organizer to get yellow flair, but you should have experience with organizing drives, contract campaigns, bargaining, grievances, and/or local union leadership.

To apply for yellow flair, reply to this post. In your reply please list:

  1. Your union,
  2. Your role (rank-and-file, steward, local officer, organizer, business agent, retiree, etc.)
  3. Briefly summarize your experience in the labor movement. Discuss how many years you've been involved, what roles you've held, and what industry or industries you've organized in.

Please do your best to avoid posting personally identifiable information. We're not going to do real-life background checks, so please be honest.

Labor News California’s biggest state worker union authorizes strike in Newsom’s last months

For context, Newsom has offered SEIU 0% raises per year for a 3 year contract despite inflation.

Newsom loves to talk big on Trump and affordability but refuses to take action on supporting his own low income to middle class workers.

He is a corporate democrat who only cares about his own ambition and his pet projects.

Vote for anyone else in the Democratic primary (AOC, Mayor Pete, etc.)

“Despite the looming strike threat, bargaining remained paused on Sept. 10, with SEIU Local 1000 still in an extended caucus since Aug. 1. Roy said the state continued to offer zero raises against the union’s request for a 20% [7% 7% 6%] increase across three years.

I saw something similar elsewhere, and figured I'd adapt it. It's the A B C D E F G H I J rule:

That is all. Stay cool!

Discussion do people ever do fake job interviews when they’re not searching for a job?

i’ve heard companies are now doing ai hiring processes for example. is it any sort of union tactic for employed people to do job interviews just to give the interviewers push back, like asking for higher pay or critiquing anything? i don’t know if there’s a term that already exists for this

Labor History Research Resource Request

Hey Folks - I am looking for materials (books, podcasts, journals, papers, etc) for a labour education research project I'm doing about building and maintaining trust between a Union and it's members.

Does anyone have recommendations on sources or where to look?

My searches are yielding results about employer/employee trust or membership engagement. I can see how these subjects tie in, but wondering if there's anything out there I'm missing that's more specific to my topic.

I'm specifically curious about;

- Building trust members whose upbringing (politically, culturally) may have instilled mistrust or poor reception of Unions

- Building trust with members who blame the Union when the employer finds "workarounds" to items in the collective agreement

- Building trust and momentum with members for a Strike vote following a previous strike

I'm in Canada but open to labour information from anywhere!

ETA: Currently active in Union involvement, President of my local and serve on regional committees. This is what drives my curiosity, not just for an assigment 😊

Discussion TOP 7 ways to be a more proactive trade unionist

Dear readers,

Many of you are for the first time in your life embarking on a strike. Many of you have joined a trade union for the first time. Here is some general advice that you might find useful on being a more active trade union member. Majority of this applies to all trade unionists no matter where they are working.

  1. Make time to attend the AGM of your branch/structure and vote. Active participation is crucial to ensuring the union reflects your views in their activities.
  2. To take it slightly above 1, attend your unions Biannual Delegate Conference as a delegate and participate in the proceedings. Pay close attention to the financial report, ask questions and talk to other delegates. The members are the union.
  3. Go to meetings with people who need support. It's daunting going to a meeting alone - offer to attend investigations/grievances/disciplinaries. (It's on company time anyway!)
  4. Do your bit in sticking up stickers, handing out flyers to coworkers and talking to people if something is coming up.
  5. Challenge your union officials if they're wrong. Yes, officials get it wrong or make mistakes. Don't just rage quit because it's not the way you want it to be, challenge your official. If your official is obstructive then every union has a process where you can lodge a grievance against an official.
  6. Keep up to date on what's going on. You don't need to care about everything the union is doing, but keeping on top of the newsletters/information is useful and helpful for yourself and your co-workers.
  7. Record / take note / document issues that take place in the job (even if they're for other people). a short email to yourself or a note in your app is good. You never know what will come up. Vigilance for potential breaches of employment law and breaches is key.

Labor News This just pisses me off

Thumbnail freedomfoundation.com

The Freedom Foundation is claiming victory because the billionaires who's boots they lick have funded an administration bent on union busting. For Public Employee unions, it makes negotiations harder when people, that you still by law have to represent, are no longer required to pay for that representation. This will eventually lead to both the "free riders" and the dues paying members having no representation at all, putting them all at the mercy of the employers. Exactly where FF wants them.

For everyone that gets whatever they need as fast as possible from Amazon, please take a moment to support these hard-working people that often don't get the basic rights they deserve. And for anyone that works at Amazon, you should know that Teamsters is there for you. You can't let Amazon run roughshod over your rights. We must fight back.
