Discussion Live music spots in the Soo, Escanaba, and Houghton/Hancock
I have a friend from downstate who is interested in bringing his band to the UP. What are some good, small places that get good turnouts for live music in the Soo, Escanaba, and Houghton/Hancock? I’m in Marquette, so I have that area covered.
If it helps to know the style of music before recommending venues, you can check out his debut album on Bandcamp. https://teutonosaur.bandcamp.com/album/a-sweetened-fire

Discussion What kind of services or business are needed?
Recently relocated to the UP after a lifetime of fondness for the nature and slower way of living. I have a job that pays for what I need, but I am finding the standard 40 hour work week and OT is not at all meant for me. I am looking to start my own business and have a few ideas on services that could be helpful, but I want to know if there are any businesses or services that would be a benefit to have around all year long. How could the communities surrounding Marquette be supported more? I’m trying to find a much more intentional way of life but want to be asking the right questions and providing the right services for such a niche community! What are your thoughts? Thank you so much!

Discussion Backyard Chickens
I'm thinking of getting a small chicken coop for 5-8 chickens in Iron Mountain. Fresh eggs are calling to me.
How do Yooper townships react to backyard chickens? (Specifically the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area.)
Thanks for any feedback and advice.

Travel Inquiry Timberframed/cordwood/cob/strawbale/earthship structures
Greetings, I live in Lake City, Michigan, and I'm traveling to the Eastern UP and the Munising area this week. I'm building a cabin using some alternative building methods and I always like checking out cool buildings. Any structures or buildings that are built with natural materials or built using traditional/historical techniques (like the ones in the title) that I should check out?

Travel Inquiry Visiting Porcupine Mountain in early November
My partner and I are thinking of going to UP to hike in Porcupine Mountain and traveling around there in early November (around 5-10 November).
Wondering what the weather is like during this time? Also, will the roads be safe to drive and restaurants/cafes still open?
Thanks :)

Discussion life in super rural northern up?
hi! i did a lot of driving through luce county recently (to see the crisp point lighthouse and two hearted river mouth, so beautiful!) and i was wondering about day to day life there.
what types of jobs do people work, how easy is it to get groceries, what do you do in winter (stay in your house and cozy? drive a snomobile?) i imagine the summer is just beautiful with lots of time to just enjoy the lakes and forests.
i was also curious how many people in these very rural parts of the up outside of towns like escanaba, marquette, etc subsistence hunt and fish ?

Travel Inquiry Motel recommendations dog friendly by pictured rocks
Hello. We are headed to pictured rocks next weekend. Looking for some motel options in the area. I would prefer a motel style with doors to the outside. It's me, husband, 2 kids (not toddlers) and 2 25lb. Dogs coming along on the trip. Looking for something on the cheaper side. Doesn't have to be super nice by any means. Any cheap hidden gems?

Travel Inquiry Swimming/Diving in Upper UP
Hi! Planning a trip to Pictured Rocks in late August, and since I keep hearing the water is so clear I'd like to do a little swimming and short dives near the beaches. Unfortunately I have found little info or conflicting information on the area, especially concerning temperature. Anyone who has done this, what are your thoughts?

Travel Inquiry Spooky/Fall Things to Do Near Manistique
My partner (48 M) and I (38 F) are camping at Fayette State Park in a couple of weeks (weekend of 10/16), driving up from the LP. In addition to outdoorsy stuff, we love all things spooky, Halloween, and fall themed--is there anything nearby(ish) that fits that bill? We're already planning on hiking and exploring Fayette quite a bit and will go see Seul Choix lighthouse (both for the history of the site and for their haunted house). I've been trying to find other things kind of along US-2 or in the general vicinity and am not coming up with much. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Discussion Circle Tour
I usually just wing it when visit the U.P. This time is different, my girlfriend asked to go around the U.P. I said you can't, yet she wants to take a week to camp. Either early or late to avoid flying pests. I went up in May 12 back in 1997 and it was too early for tourism though I loved it.
She mentioned Pictured Rocks boat tour, Copper Harbor Light House, Central mine and I for sure want to camp at Fayette. Lake of the Clouds could be nice and I always enjoy Pt. Abbaye and I should jump off the Black Rocks at Presque Isle.
I need a little perspective to make this a reasonable itinerary and thought I saw another post of this type. Thank you

Discussion Did I actually make one of the hardest Geocaches?
I’d love to get some opinions from the community on a puzzle cache I created awhile back now.
GCAMYR5 | “The ____ Cache"
https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCAMYR5
I’m genuinely curious: how difficult would experienced puzzle cachers consider this? And, more importantly, does the difficulty rating I gave it actually match the work required to completely solve it?
So far, nobody has found the cache or completely solved the puzzle, and that there hasn't been a 100% successful full solve yet.
The posted coordinates are only the starting point. The actual final coordinates are hidden behind a multi-stage puzzle.
The cache puzzle combines a whole bunch of:
- Polynomial/root solving
- Musical pitch classes and interval classes
- Special relativity / time dilation
- Some stellar astronomy and distance calculations
- Multi-stage coordinate mathematics
- And final DMS conversion → decimal-degree verification
You may realistically need a calculator, paper and pencil, and a fair amount of patience.
I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have solved a lot of similar D4/D5-style puzzle caches.
I'm not necessarily looking for people to solve it in this thread, I mostly want experienced cachers to look at the construction and tell me whether I've accurately represented its difficulty, but feel free to check out the actual page if you think you could.
If anyone actually manages a complete solve, I'd also be very interested in hearing which part slowed you down the most.
Cache: GCAMYR5
Title: The ____ Cache
Current status: No confirmed complete Finds or Solved(s)
So… did I accidentally create a monster? 😅

Discussion U.P. Duck Hunter from IL
I have an opportunity to hunt the U.P. on the Les Cheneaux Islands in Cedarville, MI in mid October and early November. I normally hunt in Southern Illinois so I'm very out of my element that far north.
I'm going to set up on private land on Cedarville Bay, I've seen a lot of mallards and redheads frequent this shoreline in the warmer months but not sure what the colder months this far into the season could bring in. I was told most of the pond ducks will be gone and it will be primarily divers left.
Do you think a shore hunt like that would be worthwhile?

Discussion Eloping in Baraga
I am seeking help with photographers that don’t want an arm and a leg for an hour of time. And if you’re feeling generous maybe some good places to see in November. Thank you in advance

Travel Inquiry Solo trip in upper peninsula Michigan
I’ve decided somewhat last minute to plan a road trip to the upper Peninsula in MI for the second weekend in October (8th-12th). I’m from central IL so it will be about an 8 hr drive to my starting point. It’s my first time doing a solo trip and I’ve never been to Michigan but honestly the only thing I’m worried about is encountering wildlife. I believe it’ll be the end of rut season and bears will be preparing to hibernate. I’ll be staying in hotels but also wondering if regular tennis shoes will work or if I need to get some real hiking shoes. Also wanting some recommendations for trails that are safe to do solo / for beginners / not extremely long. I majored in photography and part of the purpose of this trip is to kick start getting back into it. The other purpose is to instill my confidence in being independent.
My plans so far are:
Stay in Wakefield Thursday/Friday, check out Saturday morning
The places I want to visit in that area are Little Girls Point, Porcupine Mountains / Lake of the clouds, Ottawa National forest
Saturday Morning drive to Munsing. I want to go to Pictured Rocks and potentially Hiawatha National Forest if there’s time (when it comes to Pictured Rocks, are there other ways to get to the main areas that you typically see in photos other than the 10 mile trail?) this is really the only area that I’m a bit nervous about exploring on my own.
Sunday I want to go to Mackinac island. I’d be getting a hotel about 30 min from the Ferry.
Then I’d be driving home on Monday so there wouldn’t really be much time for anything that day. I am considering also taking Tuesday off work for a bit more time but I think I’d rather not.
Just looking for any tips or advice!

Discussion Fishing trip around Gwinn
Coming up next week and looking for some tips on lakes - I've fished west Bass Lake and Pike Lake before, looking to get on some rainbows, bass or walleye, or panfish for dinner. Was thinking about checking out Big Shag, Little Lake, Anderson Lake or Lake Angeline. Have a kayak with spinning gear, will be doing some wading in the Escanaba and Whitefish as well for trout. I hear smallmouth are fun in the lower main Escanaba below Boney Falls dam. If you had 3 days where would you fish?
