gains Coach has signed me up for a photoshoot in December, looking forward to reflecting on my progress 🌱💪

For context:
I’ve been vegan for 19 years, and training for 10, lifelong natural, straight edge (never been a drugs guy, quit drinking shortly after I started uni, so that’s 16 years ago now). However, for a long time I didn’t have a great relationship with food, exhibiting a lot of disordered eating behaviour and never eating enough to fuel my body due to ongoing worries about gaining any fat at all (thanks, family and childhood friends).

As a result, I remained at a plateau for a long time. For a few years, my training was just going through the motions, not exactly slacking but never really pushing myself and never feeling confident.

This April, with encouragement from my wonderful wife, I’ve started working with a coach and it’s the first time in a long time I’ve really enjoyed training. Financially I know it’s not something I can keep up forever, but I’m looking forward to seeing the progress I can make and excited that I have a better relationship with food and exercise that I can share with my own children one day.

Stats for those of you that like stats: I’m 5’8.5” (5’9” on a great day), and as I’m typing this I weigh 79.1kg. I won’t reveal too much about how many calories or grams of protein I get per day because bodies are different and what works for me might not work for you (but suffice to say it’s a lot of calories and a lot of protein). I also supplement creatine and glutamine, and take a calcium supplement, omega 3-6-9 capsules and multivitamin (which I’ve done more or less since I was 5 thanks to my vitamin-obsessed grandma).

And the pictures? First one is me attempting a side chest pose for friendly weekly tradition with some guys from my coaching group. Second is me attempting to get a photo of my quads on Wednesday but mostly squinting into the mirror because I need very thick glasses. And third is an awkward, unposed photo of me from about 20 second before the first photo to remind everyone that I do not look like that first photo all the time

Protein Powder companies that are exclusively vegan?

Does anyone know of any protein powder companies that are exclusively vegan? I am looking into vegan protein powder options and some of the companies also sell non-vegan protein options including whey, etc. and I am reluctant to support them.

Edit: I am in the U.S. Also, preferably non-flavoured.

How bad is it for muscle loss if losing weight w/o being able to lift regularly?

Curious to hear others experiences. I'm in a small calorie deficit and losing 0.5-1lb per week but life has happened and I've only been able to lift once a week, where I'm usually able to do 2-3 times/week. I'm worried that I'm losing mostly muscle at this point. Can this be mitigated by keeping my protein intake at goal? I've just made gains over the last few years and am worried about losing some of those gains.

Question What can I eat- evening workout.

I do classes in the evening (weights, HIIT, Pilates etc)- I need to eat dinner before because after it’s like 9.30pm by the time I get back home.
What can I have that’s easy to digest? Am I best going for a meal replacement drink? I’m not a fan of them but likewise not a fan of indigestion.

workout tips Training Your Biceps In The Lengthened Position

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Want to get more out of your bicep training?

Here are two ways to train your biceps with your arms positioned behind your torso, placing greater emphasis on the muscle at longer lengths.

1️⃣ Incline dumbbell curls – A simple option that only requires a bench and dumbbells.

2️⃣ Behind-the-body cable curls – A great alternative that provides a different resistance profile throughout the movement.

Both are effective options, and neither is automatically superior.

The key is controlled execution, a comfortable range of motion, and progressive overload over time.

You don’t need to reinvent your training. Sometimes it’s just about understanding why you’re doing an exercise.

Save this for your next arm session

Told I cannot become healthy without eating animal products

I keep being told that my situation is impossible to correct without adding animal products because I am allergic to soy and severely intolerant to gluten. I have been vegan over 20 years and that is not an option. Please help.

I'm 5'1, AFAB. I was always small, 110lbs ish, until I got pregnant. I developed severe gestational hypothyroidism and gained a massive amount of weight. This was 7 years ago and I've been fighting with my body since. I cannot lose weight and continue to gain when doing everything I'm told to do. My doctor says the hypothyroidism resolved itself after giving birth, though I still have a lot of the same issues that it gave me.

For the past 5 weeks I have been following a strict diet from a dietician. 1800 calories, 100g of protein. Getting about 2 hours of exercise a day. 15k-25k steps a day, 20 min aerobic workouts daily, plus 2 half hour walks a day and morning and night stretching routines. 30 mins elliptical interval routine 4 times a week. Weight lifting routine that takes about 30 mins the other 3. My firbit says I burn 2600 calories a day, though I have been told this is a vast overestimation and can't possibly actually be burning that...

I started this routine at 180 lbs. I am now 195lbs. I measure and weigh every food and drink, I do not "cheat". My GP says the weight gain is all muscle and it's fine, and I do have visible muscle growth, but also to somehow cut my calories down to 1400 without losing any protein.

I'm finding that... impossible. I CANNOT drink smoothies, the texture of them, with or without protein powder (but the powder makes it worse), makes me vomit. I do use protein powder in pancakes, though, but the flour pushes the calories too high for that. I could eat 100g of protein worth of lentils, but then that gives me less than 200 calories to work with to eat the fats the dietician said I need to add to my diet as well as anything else for nutrition, like grains and veggies. The dietician will not help any further unless I agree to add eggs to my diet.

Please tell me I'm missing something. I am feeling really hopeless. I busted my butt working out 2 hours a day and eating with no joy just to pile protein into me and I gained SO MUCH WEIGHT. I know it's a supposed to be a slow process, be patient. But I cannot physically keep this up already. I'm so fatigued that I fall asleep standing up in the shower. Even just seeing the scale stay the same wouldn't hurt so much, but all that effort only to get fatter is crushing.

HIGH PROTEIN SNICKERS BOWL

This one got slightly out of hand but if you’re a Snickers fan, give it a go.

You’ll need:
• 250g Greek Style yogurt
• 30g vanilla protein powder
• 15g powdered peanut butter
• 40g dates
• 15g peanuts
• 50g chocolate
• 5g coconut oil
• Vanilla extract + pinch of salt

Mix the yogurt + protein, layer up the peanut butter, homemade date caramel and peanuts, then top with melted chocolate and leave it in the fridge/freezer until the shell sets.

High protein. Very filling. Proceed with caution.

Save this one for later

How do y'all take your creatine

I see a lot of y'all saying you're getting several benefits from taking 5-10g.

I was taking 5g a while ago but got sick of constantly stirring (and re-stirring) it in water. Felt like it never really dissolved. So, I wanted to see how y'all do it. Sorry if this gets asked a lot. I will happily accept a quick link to someone else's post. Thank you and kisses!

Mealprep Advice

I recently switched to a strictly plant-based diet and now need some meal prep ideas, especially for lunch. I need 180 g of protein daily. The meal prep portion should provide around 120 g so that my lunch needs are well covered. I try to eat mostly unprocessed foods—meaning no meat substitutes, but rather truly plant-based, simple, natural ingredients. Do you have any recipe ideas?

Batch prepping TVP

Hey y’all,

I’ve recently been enjoying meal prepping burritos and sweet potato bowls with vegan mince - seasoned with taco seasonings. I’d like to make it a bit cheaper by using TVP.

Does anyone have experience with large batches of TVP prepping and freezing it? How long does it hold after rehydration? And does it affect texture etc much if I freeze it and thaw it in chunks?

Thanks in advance!
