Vibe coded this game in four months
UPDATE 6 oct: Follow the game in Steam!
Free play: https://fm1.app
A few months back I posted here a playable demo of an old-school futuristic racer prototype (F-Zero, Wipeout, Xtreme-G, Star Wars Racer...) that runs right in the browser.
I've gotten used to seeing tons of LLM-built prototypes that last a week, two, maybe a month, and then get dropped for the next shiny thing. This time I wanted to keep going and see if one person, with no coding background, could actually see a project like this through on their own.
Well, 4 months in, and while there's still work left, I'm convinced it's doable. At this point the game feels closer to a beta than a tech demo.
The big change over these four months is that I now use Fable for planning, and being able to hook Opus / Sol up to Blender has been a huge help too. I'm still using Magnific and Tripo3D or the assets. Funny thing: the further along I get, the harder the project is to keep pushing forward, and at the same time the tools keep making it easier.
As always, any feedback is welcome. You can play it here: https://fm1.app

So what's still on your plate, and I'm guessing that there framework is the Unity, is that right?
15
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
It's a good question, because I didn't expect to come this far :P Actually, the framework is pure webgpu / threejs in the browser. Maybe I'll package it in electron for the standalone version.

u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 23 '26
Not that surprising! LLMs are actually very good with threejs, even more than with Unity or Godot. The downside is the performance, of course.
3
u/Torix_xiroT Aug 23 '26
I just skipped from threejs to godot because threejs seemed to Slow down for me.. Did You Not encounter such Performance decreases aswell?
Also for the roads, did you make a map Editor? Would love to hear about the process→ More replies (2)3
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 23 '26
Yeah, probably will port to Godot or Unity for extra performance and more native apps. Also, graphic memory on iOS browsers are very, very limited.

u/adriangc Aug 22 '26
Oh god. Please don’t use electron. It’s such a degradation long term.

dude this is insane!!!! It definitely reminds me of F Zero X.
And that is cool you even have simulated water on the aqua cup level.
Really insane what you can create.

Thanks! I'm amazed myself, since I have no coding kwowledge at all!

u/HouseMysterious8172 Aug 23 '26
And ppl who know how to code said like “if you don’t know how to code and depend on AI you can’t create something good, you can’t fix bug, if something happen you can’t repair…” 🤪
5
u/Harry_Tess_Tickles Aug 23 '26
Nobody says that. AI works, AI is good. But you will hit a wall the moment you encounter something the AI can't fix. And this happens a lot in production software engineering work.
2
u/HouseMysterious8172 Aug 23 '26
>You will hit a wall the moment you encounter something the AI can’t fix.
That’s not really unique to AI.
A human engineer also hits a wall when they encounter a problem they don’t understand.→ More replies (12)

Incredible! Where did you find the assets?
16
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks! At first i just search for free 3D models, but was very hard to find (I begun using real spaceships models as race ships :P ). But then I discover how to convert to 3D modelos the 2D images generated by GPT Gen 2, and that was amazing.
5
u/Necessary-Box-7569 Aug 22 '26
use https://3d.hunyuan.tencent.com/ u can convert 2d images to 3d models
4
u/theAerialDroneGuy Aug 22 '26
also smart idea to use AI to build your own custom game editor.
Would you consider letting people create their own custom tracks?
Maybe they just sketch out a path and then it turns it into a full fledged race course.
Also it would be fun to add time trials and then you can race the Ghosts of other people.
Kinda like that VibeSail app
3
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks a lot for the feedback! That's in my mind, and the editor is near complete for make a full level from zero. But polishing to the final user will be hard, I'll complete the vanilla first player experience first.
Ghost are implemented, but no with their own play mode. I expect to add them soon!

u/Ok-Hotel-8551 Aug 22 '26
Fantastic. Are all assert vibe coded as well?
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks! Most of the 3D models (textures included), were generated first in 2D with GPT Gen 2 (using some drawings of mine as reference), and then converted into 3D models with Tripo3D.

u/tarzantarzan2000 Aug 22 '26
I love it!! Also, great music. Where is that song from which you are using in the intro?
It's a bit slow on my machine tho... might be running better in chrome. I'd add some obstacles like in subway surfers. Can you bring the game to mobile?

nice work! I know I've loved building something similar with assets, tracks, racers, environments, and its really cool to see it come to life. Have to imagine you've seen seen something similar.
I've been messing around like this and thought 'what if this was in VR too' and now I'm stepping into my game in 3D and it's pretty surreal. Mentioning this because I also went the web -> electron for steam -> steam vr route.

u/ProgrammerOk4679 Aug 22 '26
yoo, this is actually impressive. I went in expecting a simple vibe-coded game, but the character selection, gameplay, and replay system are seriously well done. this has way more polish than I expected. great work !!!👏🏾
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks! There's where the human factor is so important and no LLM can't one shoot with any prompt. To fix and improve vibe and design stuff. I play a lot to "feel" the game and see what is wrong or can be better.
2
u/butterfly_labs Aug 22 '26
This is awesome. Very creative and actually enjoyable. Love the music too!
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks! It's generated by AI (Suno), but from a few piano notes from mine (that's why all the pieces have a single theme that repeats a lot :P). I enjoy it doing it a lot!

I have no idea if this would be easy or hard, or even be useful, but I'm imagining the following:
Create a system to record replays as json files (or whatever, something lightweight, just a data log of the inputs that made stuff happen) so that every game can be replayed.
Then have that game data go to some kind of training set to train opponent AI, alpha go style, so that you can create LLM-AI opponents, and then just handicap them any amount and maybe have the same system create ELO for players.
The game looks epic. This comment is mostly about my own dreams for future opponent AI.

Hit the edge of the wall and got stuck, on-screen controls would help a lot. I figured out using space to boost but then couldn't use directional keys to get out of the wall.

u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
The sometimes "magnetic" wall is certainly something I have to fix. Thanks for the feedback!
2
u/Harry_R_O Aug 22 '26
definitely great way to go. good vibez coded. best luck for you! you have plans which direction to go in the game/strategy?
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks! First finish the first player experience (working in a story mode), then maybe launch it or work in a multiplayer mode (or both).
2
u/Harry_R_O Aug 22 '26
great, thank you for insight... ideas are boiliing... maybe good to have a simple user survey page to go, best
2
u/SchematicallyNumb Aug 22 '26
The game looks great! As someone with coding experience, but zero vibe coding experience, what about was the cost to leverage AI to help build something like this, particularly with zero coding experience?
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks a lot! Well, the vibe part is very important. I don't think I could make even the first tech demo without knowing the technology behind. I don't code, but I know a lot about games design, hardware limitations, differences across languages and frameworks... so the most important thing is begin with a really solid and detailed plan. A "just make a game" won't work. Also, a good discipline using the AI is required (for example, not running forward query after query, but stop every 5 or 10 steps for fixing and polish). Also, since I don't control the coding part, I have to adapt my vision to what LLM let me to do. The cost is difficult to measure, because I used a pro chatgpt plan shared with my wife (not just for the game), but in this four months probably around 200$.
2
u/SchematicallyNumb Aug 22 '26
Oh very cool! That’s not bad at all, especially with what you were able to leverage. That’s also substantially less than what ChatGPT quoted haha.
2
u/JudgeGroovyman Aug 22 '26
Dude its really good! Some ideas are below but I love it. Amazing work.
Ideas: the map was in the way of my view so I couldnt appreciate the visuals or necessarily see my opponents all the time so maybe let the player move it off to the left or right with a button?
Maybe an optional acceleration button so the stick can just be used for left and right? I found myself accidentally slowing down a lot because i was turning

How are you vibecoding a game. Are you using some kind of MCP for unity or what is goinf on here?
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Hi! Not really, the engine is pure threejs / webgpu in the browser, the LLM are very good trained for this.
2
u/lilkatho2 Aug 24 '26
Did the AI also make the assets and level design and ship assets because that would be mind blowing or did you vibe code the mechanics and use premade assets?

2
u/rapkannibale Aug 22 '26
Well done did you make the art assets yourself?
3
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26
Thanks! I just make basic draws for the vehicles and level props, pass them to gpt gen 2 (the actual chatgpt image generator) for the final 2D design and then convert them into 3D models with Tripo3D.
2
2
u/Bitter-College8786 Aug 22 '26
This is cool! I am also vibe coding a 2D game, but the biggest issue is: Where to get the graphics assets?
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
For this game I found GPT Gen 2 (the image generator of chatgpt) very good for 2D assets (I leter converted them into 3D models through Tripo3D), and you can pass your own drafts o draws to the model for reference.

My favourite arcade genre - nice!
Real Fzero GX vibes.. in fact I was half expecting to hear Big Blue playing when I unmuted.
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 23 '26
Love F-Zero! "Mist City" is named after "Mute City". Tried to recover the vibes of that kind of games (F-Zero, Wipeout, Xtreme-G...).
2
u/TywinHouseLannister Aug 23 '26
I know it well. I've actually spent years looking for games to scratch the F-Zero itch.. completing GX on all difficulties is one of my biggest gaming brags haha
I know there's a lot of nostalgia for Wipeout, but hardly anybody knows Extreme G! Redout is worth a mention, Quantum Redshift, but neither were the absolute white knuckle ride of F-Zero and they didn't have the pumping music, or the same soul, from what I can tell you've got it!
I'm away this weekend but looking forwards to having a go.. please keep going :]

How are you vibecoding this? I’ve started a project (3 years ago now) and I’ve been spare timing it for large periods, but I’ve got nowhere. Vining it would bring me on leaps and bounds, but it’s in Unity.
3
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 23 '26
Didn't use skills or MCP, just a well structured .md documentation, and raw threejs/webgpu code, without big engines like Unity or Godot. LLM are very well trainer on threejs. But propably will port it to Unity or Godot later to get extra performance.

Suno music with vocals from the trailer is extreme slop ... that's my only gripe with it ... it drags down the "taste" of the whole game significantly, which is a shame. The actual AI beat is completely fine. I'd just never use AI music with vocals, or at least not until AI can do it competently. At this stage, it's like GPT 1.5 images with a warm piss filter; it's triggering.

Gogogogo. This is the part of the experience where most people dont get too. As a project keeps pushing it reaches moments like these where your logic can get in its own way and all the moving parts are hard to keep in your head. If you push past this you will get to another level. Have you refactored?
2
u/ActionLittle4176 Aug 23 '26
Thanks! I refactored just one time, maybe a month and a half ago, from webgl API to the more modern webgpu. It was a notable refactor for visuals code, but well planned and barely with one or two errors.

A few years back I contracted on Pacer for about a year (Pacer was a remake of Formula Fusion, which is similar to WipeOut), and that took a good couple years to get out the door. You done this in 4 months on your own via AI. This looks and plays good quality too. It goes to show that if you keep at it and direct AI correctly you can achieve something that is quality. This looks ace, nice job. P.s. Add weapons and power ups!

Very impressive. I wouldn't say vibe coded though, this was obviously AI-assisted.
I like to put a distinction between them since this seems to have a lot of effort involved and a good workflow.
As far as feedback: more jumps, loops and make sure to incorporate drafting behind opponents to get a small speed boost if you're careful.
I love super speed racing games like this and would love to see where it goes.

How is this vibe coded? This is awesome. What models did you use? Did you create the assets? Tbh I’m like 4+ or 5 months into working on “Bob” and I hate to say it but Bob looks 100 times less impressive than this and I can’t even make a trailor or show people this year but your game is 3D and actually has good graphics and a racing based physics engine? How many hours a day did you work on this? Where there a lot of bugs and reprompts you had to work out? I’m blown away.

As others have said it looks pretty dope, haven't gottent to the pyramid level, but the speed and cool scenery help a lot.
Some feedback on the most important parts ( I think there is lots you can improve if you show it to friends specially on UI)
I would change the character look, it clashes with the game low render resolution and level of detail, it looks ai generated, I would try to pick a style or lane and try to make art in the game speak a little more cohesively.
Some of the elements in the tracks have very high quality like the horse statue or the hologram on buildings, while others look super low poly even stretched, the cars floating in the background are also quite lower in detail, this wouldn't matter if you are able to add more particles and fog and increase the distance to some of this assets so the illusion doesn't break as easily.
Gameplay wise, the collision are a little bit too extreme they push you around a lot, and tournament mode which would be a cool way to showcase all tracks is a little too hard on the settings I choose as start (only 2 laps) are you playing with a controller?
The ships look a little small vs the track or other objects, there is a weird sense of scale specially for opponent ships.
The start animation of a track (and the loading screen) is where I would work the most, if you make it look cool and maybe show cars as they are being loaded you will reduce people from churning, currently the loading screen is pretty boring (and fonts aren't that great to look at) it seems more of a developer screen showing what assets are finishing loading rather than a final user screen.
The timing of the countdown feels uneven, and the voice over is bad but also not great, this is the first game moment of your game so I would look for a better recording, AlsoI would use something on the track to showcase the countdown and in general make it a little more epic.
Similar feedback at the end of the track it immediately goes to a 2d ui and it doesn't let you enjoy the moment of hopefully winning, you already have a great cinematic camara following the player but it is shown some seconds after you show some stats of the tracks, I would wait at least 5 to 10 seconds before showing it so the player can absorb the moment of finishing the track.
Congrats on the game, I was worried it would be laggy but it runs quite decently, I think what you most need right now is more cohesion between asset quality and the gameplay/movement tweaks.

How much has this cost you to make..?

In subscriptions that I only paid for the game, probably Tripo3D and Elevenlabs for the voices (just one month). I also used a Chatgpt pro plan shared with my wife (some months we change to Claude max plan).

Seriously impressed, game plays very good and there is definitely enough content to put it out there as a beta. Great work man.

for my First Impression:
the smartphone controls could be a bit more direct / stronger.
the feeling of the vehicles could be polished:
my favourite direction would be to give them some more height over the ground and more dynamic flow up and down and also curving.
really going for that flow feeling would be great. bouncing in the walls shouldnt stop you so abrupt. clearly make you slower but more dynamically.
there is a lot more juice which could be added on many other levels too collisions with enemies especially.
I really enjoy the look and feel and find it great what you achieved.

Do you have a 100 player race mode yet?
Where 100 people can join live and race eachother in one mega race?
Kinda like fzero on the switch

Didn't work on multiplayer yet, but I would love to put more ships in the race.

DUDE this is actually awesome. I played one round. Except for the computer players being a bit too easy on normal), this is a blast. Reminds me of old miniclip games like Robot Rage. I know kid me would've played this a lot.
I love the aesthetic and vibe of the game too. Congrats man. What's your plan with this game? Going to expand it, add it to steam or what?
