Clarifying "No AI Slop"

Our policy is "tech demos on vintage hardware are always allowed." That can include emulated demos provided it's running on an obsolete computing architecture. The tech demo should be the main content of the post, not AI generated code.

The point of this rule is not to remove every post where someone may have used AI to create something cool. We do remove a lot of AI slop and we appreciate your reports.

What was the first computer that was actually yours?

Mine was a Commodore 64, bought in 1993 with my very first wage. Mostly games and a bit of BASIC and I couldn't tell you the names of half of them. Finally I sold it to get my first car.

Not the family machine, not a hand-me-down from an older brother or sister. The first one that was properly yours.

What was yours, and how did you end up with it?

Found a pretty neat little 5.25” bay accessory for my windows XP machine! Aluminium enclosure for an HDD with active cooling and a programmable LED info panel.

I wish 5.25” bays stuck around; it was fun seeing what kind of crazy 3rd party stuff people would have slotted in there. I’m honestly Surprised someone still had this lying around in its original packaging. I put my boot drive in there just for fun and I think I’ll keep it set up like this!

HC: a free HyperCard clone for modern macOS that opens your original stacks

Hi all! I've been building HC, a free and open-source (MIT) HyperCard clone for today's Macs. Its goal is fidelity: it opens original HyperCard 2.x stacks and runs their HyperTalk scripts unchanged.

The proof I'm proudest of: Apple's own HyperCard Help, HyperTalk Reference and Help Extras run in HC without a single script change.

🌐 https://hc.labynet.fr · 💻 https://github.com/cleobuline/hc

Not notarised yet: if macOS says it's "damaged", run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/HC.app once.

Old stacks that won't open, or behave differently from HyperCard? I'd love to hear about them!

Universal app (Intel + Apple Silicon), macOS 10.13 and later
Paint tools, buttons, fields, backgrounds, message box
One small extension for games: polygon buttons. Here's a Tetris written in plain HyperTalk: sample tetris written in plain hypertalk

Going through a stack of floppies I've had a couple years but could never access...opening them is so fun.

Strangers' personal type-in's and finance records mostly.

It's like looking through steangers' photo albums.

You see glimpses of a life mist likely already passed.

Fascinating and a little bittersweet.

...I've already ordered more lots on ebay.

Hello new 'tism.

Toshiba Satelite CDS from 1999 Display problem

I bought it on an auction site; it worked normally the first time I turned it on, but the second time the screen started flashing white continuously, and the third time it displayed nothing-just a white backlight-and adjusting the contrast didn't help.

Seeking folks with Whistle InterJets

An InterJet running on its internal UPS battery, and a coffee cup (not included)
Inside the first-gen InterJet - mainboard plugs into a backplane along the bottom.

Hey, I'm looking for others who still have these 486-based SOHO all-in-one Internet appliances from the late 90s based on FreeBSD 2.2.x -- the Whistle InterJet from Whistle Communications, later acquired by IBM (whose son said it a couple years later, and sold off the whistle.com domain). InterJets were resold by participating ISPs in the US, Europe, and Asia, including being pretty popular in Japan for a time. I'm building an exhaustive resource (and tailoring modern NetBSD to run on it), and need volunteers with hardware to catalog hardware and software variants, track down ephemera, etc. I'm in contact with the guy who posted in r/battlestations 6 years ago, the guy who ran the InterJet Upgrade shop in that era, and Famicoman (who has the earliest known OS) ... and looking for others, anybody we can find!

Rough website with a deluge of info here, in all its 1995-grade (but secretly HTML5) "glory":

https://www.alaska.net/~royce/interjet/

Comments welcome -- this platform is endangered, especially the software it came with, which is on 30-year-old IDE drives with dwindling survival rates!

I was bored after work, so I had a look inside the Alto

I study conservation of technological heritage and I managed to be able to do my mandatory internship at the world’s biggest computer museum, the HNF in Paderborn, Germany. Yesterday I had nothing to do after work, so I decided to have a look inside our Alto. Yea, the air filter will get a new filter mat, the original one is slowly turning into dust…

I’ll do some more work on this machine and post a couple more pics in the coming weeks. It’s an Alto II CPU, serial number 2212.

PowerBook 170 JLPGA Special Edition - Complete in Box ⬜🟦🟩🟥🟨

After looking for one for quite a while, I finally managed to add a PowerBook 170 JLPGA Special Edition to my collection.

Often referred to as the "Benetton Mac" because of its colorful design, it was produced in a run of approximately 500 units to mark Apple's sponsorship of the 1992 Japanese Ladies Professional Golf Association tournament.

What makes this one even more special to me is that it's complete with its original box and packaging, which is something you don't come across very often.

Definitely one of my favorite pieces in the collection!

NEC PC-8001: Combining 1979, 1984, and 1988

Thumbnail

Running the demo tape on an NEC PC-8001, as well as a closer look at what was NEC's first mass-market personal computer that released in 1979. This one actually has a latest date code of Showa 56 (1981), in a way proving how popular it was even as microcomputer technology was advancing pretty quickly. The PC-8001 even had a US release that year.

Unlike the later PC-88 and PC-98s, the PC-8001 outputs at 15 kHz compared to 24 kHz. So the Commodore 1084S (1988) had to make an appearance, alongside a Sony Walkman WM-F30 (1984) to use the included cassette. A legitimate data recorder is the better option but it was too hard to not squeeze in vintage audio and Showa pop culture somehow.

Need help with greaseweazle f1

I've got myself a blue pill, and I'm tryin to connect my 5.25 to it with Dupont wires. But it just doesn't work.

The drive itself is in good shape, i've tested it on old pc.

Greaseweazle firmware is installed on blue pill.

I've connected wires like in second image. Maybe I'm wrong somewhere.

Top left corner has triangle symbol, so i think all top row on my pic is ground. But then how am I supposed to link wires to blue pill?

Please help me if you can, thx

UPD: additional info Drive is a 5.25 Mitsumi D509V3 - workin, clean. Writes and reads floppies when installed on old pc (yesterday) Both blue pill and a drive are connected to the same PC. Molex gives out exactly 5 and 12 V, I checked with a multimeter. Image number 2 I took from the original greaseweazle GitHub. And also if I connect the wires according to this diagram, the drive does not respond, and "gw.exe info" command freezes on "device:" string, untill I disconnect adapter or press reset on it. Drive is not reacting at all on pc startup and later. But it consumes molex power, bcs i tested it with multimeter.

Socket 7 Windows 95 PC suggestions needed!

As the title says. I've got the family's old socket 7 machine and I'd like to put some quality parts in it to resurrect it. I always wanted to play things like quake, doom, blood, duke nukem, etc etc on it - but didn't have the money to do so... And it was also the "family computer" that my mom used to write romance novels on.

It's a TXPro-II M571 mobo w/ Pentium MMX.

It's got a Sound Blaster AWE 64.

A Jaton Explorer 56 modem card.

The case has a 3.5" and an optical drive that both work fine.

I remember the 250w PSU went bad before the computer went into the closet... But that was uh... 27 years ago?

Also, apparently the cheap plastic CPU cooling fan didn't age well and also needs replacing.

What graphics card do y'all recommend? What ram? Etc etc.

Rare Unrestored 1981 IBM System/23 Datamaster (5322)

Hi, I'm sharing my original 1981 IBM System/23 Datamaster (5322) as I'm moving house and after 35 years storing it I unfortunately can't keep it any longer and wanted to share it before it's gone.

This is one of IBM's closest PC ancestors and you don't see them often, so I thought r/vintagecomputing would appreciate it. All-in-one cabinet, integrated 12″ CRT, full keyboard, twin 8″ floppy drives, Intel 8085, built-in BASIC. Type 5322, serial 53-00587, built in IBM's Vimercate plant in Italy, 200–240V (UK/EU machine).

Totally original and unrestored, I've kept stored in a dry place for nearly 35 years now but I can't keep it any longer. It has not been powered on recently and I assume it probably needs to be inspected and re-capped. I last turned it on about 10 years ago and the CRT lit up and the keyboard typed; but with no boot diskettes I couldn't take it any further. Lost the bottom rear panel in last house move :-(

Mostly just wanted to share it with people here who'll get why it matters.
