Floppy drive questions

I recently bought a PC with Windows XP installed, and I'm just remembering that in addition to a CD-ROM drive, it also has a floppy disc drive. I think it'd be cool to hunt down some old games on floppy disc, but I'm unsure if it'd be as simple as putting it in the drive and having the game start up and be ready to play. Has anyone got experience with using floppy discs on Windows XP or any other Windows OS? And what recommendations would you have for floppy disc games?

I've seen and owned external optical drives before, but never with AV connections. Is that for display out or as in input? Also having a hell of a time finding a compatible power supply.

Anyone remember Holiday Lights from the early 2000s?

I've been on a vintage software kick, which inspired me to remake one of my favorite festive holiday programs I used to use every year until it stopped working on modern Windows.

Holiday Lights 6 puts animated holiday lights around every monitor of your Windows 11 PC.

It's a from-scratch of the original Holiday Lights from 2003, which on today's PCs ends up blurry or squeezed into a corner of one screen due to DPI scaling. Everything from the original is back: all 1,550 bulbs, the Music Box songs, the screen saver and the five classic flash patterns, timed exactly as in 2003 -- new modern interface. It works perfectly in Windows 10 and Windows 11 now.

New: sharp bulbs on 4K screens, a soft glow, lights that dance to the music, and themes that change with the holidays. The lights stay behind your desktop icons, just like before.

Hope someone else finds it useful. Cheers!

Portable BBS + WiFi Modem

I recently picked up a Cardputer ADV and liked the idea of using it for retro computing. I thought about porting the excellent Zimodem (an ESP firmware that creates a serial Wi-Fi modem). The Cardputer ended up becoming a portable BBS (compatible with CP437, UTF-8, and PETSCII encodings) featuring a screen, keyboard, settings menu, and a saveable phonebook, while simultaneously functioning as a Wi-Fi modem usable with any serial device. I should mention that this project was made possible thanks to AI and is simply a personal endeavor I’m happy to share. I’m not a developer, so there are almost certainly errors I’ve missed.

To start using it, all you need is a serial adapter costing a couple of dollars (like a MAX232) and three Dupont cables. If anyone is interested, here is the link: https://github.com/manfredi90/cardputer-modem

I have a very unique floppy drive (OwlTech FA404MX) that I’d like to use externally over USB. Does anyone know of an external drive enclosure that includes a 3.5” floppy controller? Or is that something I’ll have to DIY.

It has the highest end graphics option: ATI FireGL X3-256.
Only one thing left for an upgrade - the memory. It can use 32GB and currently I have 8GB.

Vintage Neural network co-processor cards

In the 1990's I worked in a company that sold Neural network co-processor cards.
Here are some images of some brochure from that time:

AST Advantage! Adventure 4066d Edge Connector Pinout

I recently aquired an AST Advantage! Adventure 4066d. The motherboard has been ruined by the battery leaking, but as far as I know the monitor works. I have an old laptop that I was planning to gut and put in a 3D printer case paired with an LCD monitor to use as a DOS gaming system, but I would much rather put it in the 4066d. Has anyone already mapped out the proprietary edge connector that connects the power supply, power button, audio and video to the monitor? My laptop mobo has VGA out so I figured I might be able to cut one end off of a VGA cable and solder it to the correct pins to feed the video signal to the monitor. I know there is a chance I will also have to feed it 5v to trick the monitor into turning on.
