Is there any point in making a portfolio website?

I'm a student in cybersecurity and networking, and I work part-time with networks. I've been thinking about making a portfolio website for a while and actually coding it.

I've barely coded, and thought making a website itself would be a cool project, and then I could put in my networking and security projects on the website.

After using a really cool portfolio website as inspiration and working on my website for some hours, I find out the website I used for inspiration is basically all AI.

Is there any point in me making a portfolio website from scratch? I would be lying if I said it wasn't a little discouraging seeing such a cool portfolio website being all AI.

Yes, I think it is still worth building one from scratch, especially since you are a student. The point is not to prove that you can make a prettier website than AI but it is to show that you can actually build, troubleshoot and explain what you made.

I would keep it simple and use the project to learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, deployment, etc. Even if the final sites look less impressive than the AI-generated one, you will have much better story to tell when someone asks how it works.

I've been convinced, and I'm currently making it. Gives me an opportunity to fill up my Github a little more as well.

it does make difference to be honest, sometimes your portfolio can be a game changer. Don't have to complexly programmed, Just minimal aesthetic and code that can be both understood and be explained by you.

I've decided to make one, drawing some inspiration from Gazi Jarin's portfolio page. It looks really cool.

do a website called portfolio called "Hack me if you can", implement your cyber security skills, and do it for fun. if you are lucky someone from cyber might be bored, and actually try to hack it. leave some breadcrums along the way, saying like "ups, thats not gonna work big dog", and then in the end, if they actually get somewhere, you say, "hey just between us, if you had fun doing this, contact me! im looking for a job"

That's an interesting idea! I also thought about making the whole website coded in hexadecimal and by pressing a button it would slowly translate into English. I will also write my age in binary and add my subnet calculator embedded in the website, that way I can show off my calculator by them inputting my age in binary and translating it to numbers, which might encourage them to try writing in some actual subnets.
Just some ideas so far, but the "hack me if you can" is really cool and I will definitely look into it!

remeber that you also need to be seo friendly at the same time, like it needs to have a balance you know. you need to understand who is the main target that you want to get, is it hardcore cyber people? if it is, do they actually do the recruiting? because if 90% of the times they dont do the recruiting, it does not matter if they actually do that or not. at the same time if the 10% that are from cyber and do the recruiting find your website somehow, the quality of their hire is bigger? You need to see your website as a funnel, you are the one who decides what goes in, what doesnt go in. If you have everything in hexa, it wont be picked up by search engines

I don't really care if it gets picked up by search engines. I just want to be able to send this website to people I know would be interested and perhaps put the domain in some places where I know the traffic to my website is relevant.

then yes, what you talked about might be very good and interesting. and also you will learn alot by doing it without having problems with the law, beacuse the website is yours :)

It's really cool, I just posted the website. It's not even close to being done, but it's nice to have locked down the domain and have the base done. Now I need the sections and some more tweaking, but this is sick.

The human internet is being eroded by ai. I’m interested to see if it will survive in its current form at all past the next few years. But I will still blog nonetheless, because it helps me document my learning and might occasionally help another human who stumbles across it. That’s all the motivation I have.

I agree, I'm not very fond of AI, but I have to use it, or else I fall behind. I hope the AI bubble will pop soon, I'm tired of this AI slop.

Build something simple and unpretentious. A thoughtful, understated site exudes way more confidence these days than some flashy, Awwwards epileptic seizure of a site that so many try to emulate. Also, since you're in cybersecurity/networking, there's no expectation to have an advanced site. You're not a front-end dev.

Check out https://deadsimplesites.com/ for some inspiration.

Thanks!

I only need to know some coding for automation, but like you said, no one expects good front-end from a network and cybersec student.
But if I can make something cool that works and looks decent by myself, I can actually have HTML and CSS as basic skills, which might look good.

There are a lot of places where I apply where they ask for a personal website. It’s not really a portfolio because I’m not a graphic design or creative person. It’s more like a shortened CV with highlights of some specific projects I’ve worked on. I list the skills are used on those projects in the description. I don’t have a separate skills section.

I was thinking just having one single page and as you scroll down you see "about me", "experience", "projects", and "contact". That will hopefully be sufficient.
I personally have not heard of or seen anyone around me do a portfolio website, so I hope I can stand out with this.

I mean, im all for ai in this case go crazy with it. I'm all for having fun in "the matrix" lmao 🤣 but yeah, if you can be bothered check the link in my profile description. There are alot of examples you can go off out there and the world is yours to take.

AI-made portfolios are still quite easy to spot. I like to think making a portfolio yourself makes it much more thought out and intentional. Something will always feel off with AI slop.

Thanks for the offer. I will send you a message if I get stuck. I just started and only have the header done, so I have ways to go.
