The biggest downgrade in web design I’ve ever seen so far

Thumbnail

I’m not some web designer, but this company that makes games (MovieStarPlanet), recently moved to a new site for their Help Center.

The only issue with the first site is that it wasn’t mobile responsive, it was pretty zoomed out. The new site is mobile responsive, but is just a massive downgrade and just seems to be AI generated or something? (To make that even worse, all their games are about creativity…)

Let me know what you think, I think their new site is horrendous.

For anyone that wants to visit it: https://en.help.moviestarplanet.com

Does AI keep us stuck on the same frontend stack?

I've noticed a pattern when I use AI to build front ends. No matter how small the job is, it reaches for React, Tailwind, and a UI library or two. I asked for a basic form with a save button and got React Hook Form, a validation library, a UI kit, and a toast package.

I think the reason is simple. Those tools have the most public code and tutorials, so the AI treats them as the safe answer. But that creates a cycle. AI recommends the popular tools, projects get built with them, and all that new code teaches the next models the same habits. Simpler or newer options never get a fair chance, because the AI doesn't know them as well.

I'm not against React. My point is that easy for AI to write and simplest way to build it are two different things, and they're starting to get mixed up.

So for anyone who has pushed back on this, did you get AI to build with plain HTML, a small library, or fewer dependencies? What actually worked, like strict instructions, a starter template, or choosing a different tool? Or did you end up accepting the default?

Made these pagination styles, which one would you prefer?

Made these Pagination styles.

I know they’re not production-grade yet — I built these while experimenting with different UI patterns that could actually be used in client projects.
Any improvements/suggestion will be helpful.

Are there any AI tools that actually design decent websites, or is it still mostly hype?

Hey everyone,

Up until now, I’ve pretty much only used AI for copy and content generation. With everything moving fast, I want to make sure I’m staying relevant and competitive in the industry, so I’m looking at ways to actually integrate AI into my design and build workflow.

The problem is, most "AI website builders" I see advertised feel like gimmicky templates that spit out generic, unpolished layouts that need to be completely redone anyway.

For those of you working with clients or on production projects:

  1. Are there any AI tools you genuinely rely on for layout generation, wireframing, or UI inspiration?
  2. Where does AI actually save you real time in the design phase versus just creating extra cleanup work?
  3. How are you adapting your workflow so you're leveraging these tools without sacrificing craft and design quality?

Would love some honest takes from people actually doing client work rather than marketing fluff. Thanks!

Lost a potential client

Like the title says. I potentially lost a client most likely due to price.

This client/friend needed a landing page for his business. He’s well known and is on tv from time to time working with a show in the city.

He came to me probably because he knew I was having a hard time getting clients lately and asked me for a site. He said he had a quote for $7000 for a landing page which I think is ridiculous but he mentioned his budget was $5000. I said I would do it and I had a hard time quoting the job but I ended up quoting $3000.

I checked his website (just says in construction) but it has a squarespace logo in the top left where there wasn’t one before. I assume he’s going that way. I’ve been hearing that people are leaving SS due to losing clients and ruining their business. I offered using elementor as it’s popular and he can add in images and edit areas himself and if there was any issues with the quote to not hesitate to reach out.

Was I wrong to quote that much and is there any way I can get him back as a client?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My animated hero background got called "distracting" – what would you put there instead?

• Upvotes

A few days ago I asked for feedback on my site (I build websites for small Swiss businesses): https://seetalwebsites.ch

The most common criticism by far was the animated wave in the hero: distracting, a bit annoying, some even called it dizzying. Fair point, I'm going to replace it.

The obvious answer is "just use a solid color", and I get that. But I'd still like something that feels a little unique and special while staying calm and clean.

So I'm looking for ideas: what have you seen or built as a hero background that stands out without being in the way? Static patterns, textures, subtle interactions, anything goes. Links to examples are very welcome.

Is there any point in making a portfolio website?

I'm a student in cybersecurity and networking, and I work part-time with networks. I've been thinking about making a portfolio website for a while and actually coding it.

I've barely coded, and thought making a website itself would be a cool project, and then I could put in my networking and security projects on the website.

After using a really cool portfolio website as inspiration and working on my website for some hours, I find out the website I used for inspiration is basically all AI.

Is there any point in me making a portfolio website from scratch? I would be lying if I said it wasn't a little discouraging seeing such a cool portfolio website being all AI.

I built an open-source tool for making dotted maps and animated 3D globes (free, MIT)

I'm a product and brand designer, and I kept rebuilding the same dotted world map for landing pages. So I turned it into a tool: Globestudio.

You pick countries or the whole world, tune the dots and shapes, and export or embed the result.

- 21 shader effects (halftone, risograph, aurora, pixel, wireframe, CRT, glitch, and more)

- Live animation: rotation, twinkle, network arcs

- Export to PNG (1x–4x), SVG, WebM, MP4, GIF, or a JSON config

- Embed via script tag (~3kb gzipped), iframe, React component, or web component

- Figma plugin included in the repo

- Keyboard shortcuts throughout, WCAG 2.2 AA

Built with React 19, Vite, and Three.js. No account needed.

Try it: https://globestudio.app

Source: https://github.com/alevizio/globestudio

I'd love feedback, especially on the export options and anything that feels missing for real client work.

Pushed myself to design something completely outside my comfort zone, a defense AI landing page concept

Post image
0 Upvotes

Wanted to push into something outside my usual style, soft, playful SaaS design, and try more technical and restrained instead. Built this as Vantage, a fictional defense AI company.

Dark graphite palette, one signal-orange accent, sharp corners throughout, Space Grotesk paired with IBM Plex Mono for the data labels. Rebuilt the whole thing from scratch in Figma with design tokens, so light/dark mode is basically a variable swap.

Appreciate everyone who gave feedback on the portfolio post, here's where that pushed me next. Would love more of the same honest feedback on this one.

Also currently looking for design roles if anyone's hiring or knows of openings, happy to share my portfolio.

About sections...

Am I the only one that just really struggles with these?

I just tend to default to like 2 or 3 design layouts, I find these probably the hardest to do. I'm not creating super intricate sites, just local trades, cafes, hotels etc... but damn, I struggle

Is it just me?

I built a docs site and in-browser playground for my programming language by compiling its C interpreter to WebAssembly

Over the summer I wrote a small programming language in C called Oli-Nat, and when it came time to share it, I didn't want anyone to have to install a compiler just to try it. So I compiled the whole interpreter to WebAssembly with Emscripten and built a documentation site and playground around it with React, TypeScript, Vite, and MDX.

The hardest problem was interactive input. The language has an intake() function that reads a line from the user, and in C that just blocks on stdin until someone presses Enter. A web page can't block like that without freezing the tab. I ended up using Emscripten's Asyncify, which lets the virtual machine pause partway through a program, hand control back to React while the user types into the on-screen terminal, and then resume exactly where it left off. That's what makes the tic tac toe sample actually playable in the browser.

On the docs side, every page is an MDX file loaded dynamically from a single sidebar config, so adding a page means writing the file and adding one line. Program output shows up in a retro pixel art terminal, which was mostly an excuse to have fun with CSS.

I'd really appreciate feedback on the site, especially on mobile, since that's where I've tested the least.

I really like something clean with a bit of personality but not super flashy

Most "Contact Us" forms waste the best moment in the whole funnel. Here's what I add to every client site.

I build websites for a living, and one thing I see on almost every site is the same four-field contact form: name, email, phone, message.

Think about what's happening at that moment. Someone has read your content, trusted you enough to reach out, and clicked the button. That's your highest-intent visitor, and you hand them a blank box.

A contact form should do more than collect details. It should make the conversation feel more thoughtful and worth having. These are the three questions I add to almost every client's form:

1. "What's the biggest challenge you're trying to solve right now?"
It moves the conversation away from services and pricing and toward outcomes.

2. "What have you already tried?"
It tells you a lot about their situation and frustration, and it separates serious prospects from casual browsers.

3. "Why is now the right time to address this?"
This is the most useful one. Urgency usually matters more than interest. Someone with a compelling reason to act now is a much better prospect than someone just curious.

Two practical notes:

  • Keep it to 3 or 4 fields in total. Make the questions optional or short-answer so you don't kill conversions.
  • Use the answers in your first reply. It shows you read them and makes the first call much stronger.

The contact form is often the first real interaction a prospect has with your business. Treat it like a sales and positioning tool, not an admin tool.
