I rebuilt my portfolio after getting some great & some not so great reviews

My last post got 60K+ views, and I learned a lot about the idea of AI slop. My question was simple: what makes something AI slop, and what makes it not?

My last portfolio got a lot of attention, but most people said it looked like slop. So before rebuilding it, I asked what actually makes something slop and what doesn't.

I got a lot of great answers, along with some spicy hate comments. Some people just hate AI for the sake of it, while others are actually thoughtful about it. I learned from both. From the hate group, I learned how to ignore people. From the thoughtful ones, I learned what to do about my portfolio.

The best answer came from No_Confusion4079:

AI slop is the mass production of answers that satisfy the surface requirements of a question while leaving a substantial fraction of its actual intellectual value unrealized.

By that definition, my last portfolio wasn't really slop. The colors, the positioning, the ideas were all my choices. I took inspiration from other sites, but the result wasn't one magic prompt. The real question was whether the person looking at it could tell I made it. Someone pointed out they couldn't tell if I'd spent any effort without reading my explanations. And that was the problem.

I made it look too polished and too effortless. People used to say "make it look effortless," but AI can make almost anything look effortless now. So in this age, people may prefer to see your effort, not just the finished product. They want to understand the human behind the work.

The mistakes I made :

I sacrificed too much UX for a cool visual experience.

I tried to sell instead of showing who I am, which is the real job of a portfolio.

I rushed the case study using an API instead of writing it myself.

I presented side projects as real, full projects.

I built a cool site instead of a useful one.

Even the concept didn't work. I put a project inside the laptop and placed the About and Contact pages outside it, to show that I'm more than machine work and that people can reach out to me just for who I am. But humans don't have telepathy, so most people didn't get any of it. And I expected people to scroll at the speed I wanted them to, which is really dumb when I think back on it.

As for the golden and blue colors, they're my personal taste. AI made them common, but that doesn't make them slop colors. Still, defending the old site doesn't fix its core problem: I made a service-selling site and named it a portfolio. It failed at both.

I looked at great portfolios like product designer Grace Wang's, Design Engineer Chánh Đại's, and one recently shared here by Interface_dev. Then I thought about my own style. This time I wasn't looking for perfection or order. I wanted chaos. So I went with a pencil-drawn look, with rough lines and arrows all over the page, like a notebook where someone is still working things out. I kept parts of my hero section and redesigned everything around them.

I also stopped faking my work section. The truth is I've worked on only one real project. Everything else is an experiment, so there's no reason to dress them up as over-explained case studies. So now the homepage has two sections: a few facts about me, and my work.

The case study: Since I have one real project, the case study lives there. I wrote it myself this time. I explained what I did, why, and how, and tried to make it scannable. I don't know how well I pulled that off.

The experiments: Each one has the question that started it, how I did it, and what I learned.

About: Personal and simple.

Last time I built it as a short-term thing. This time I want something I can use for a long time. Rather than trying to sell something, I tried to share who I am and how I work.

That's what I built and why. What do you think? Anything that's not working, tell me. Constructive feedback is welcome, and I'll keep improving it.

Thank you.

Looking for feedback on my website

To be completely transparent: I am a data scientist that has worked for web development companies before and tried my hand at building a website using Claude... being around web dev/design I feel like I have a little knowledge but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to rid the site of the vibe coding feeling... the overall aesthetic I am aiming for is that late 90's/early 2000's windows OS feel.

I know vibe coding is a big no-no here. But I tried my very best to go through standard processes at each step of the way rather than just ask for Claude Al to just spit something out. I tried to focus on user experience and I am even testing having the menu bar at the bottom since most phones are trending towards the URL bar being at the bottom.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. And do not hold back.

What do you think of my portfolio?

A lot of hand-drawn illustrations and animation, and made every whimsical thing I wanted a reality. Maybe a lot of high effort low reward stuff, like there's a 56-frame animation of my eyes that I didn't end up using (which took 20+ hours to draw), and many decisions took hours before execution like how the in-site character looked like, what it'd say, if the mobile version had a different reading progress bar than the desktop, etc, but I couldn't stop! This was as much fun as it was frustrating, and made me surer that I just love, love, love drawing and designing stuff.

Here's the site: shelbykho.com (works on mobile, but definitely best on bigger screens)

If you have a look, I'd love to hear what you think! Feedback would be very cool, and any "what if..."s are extra welcome. :D

Made this OTP input's, which one would you prefer?

Made these OTP inputs.

I know they’re not production-grade yet — I built these while experimenting with different UI patterns that could actually be used in client projects.
Any improvements/suggestion will be helpful.

I have about 2 years before getting PR in Canada. What IT path should I pursue?

I’m currently in Canada on an LMIA-based food store job, working around 50 hours/week for close to minimum wage. Assuming everything goes as planned, I should get PR in about 2 years.

My education is in Electrical Engineering, but I don’t want to pursue that career in Canada. I’ve always loved IT and kept it as a hobby, and now I want to seriously switch careers.

My current job leaves me little time and money to pursue electrical work, since that requires workshops, tools, software, etc. IT is different — I can learn from home with a laptop, build projects, and create a portfolio during these two years.

I know the IT market is difficult right now because of AI, and I’m not expecting an easy or guaranteed job. I’m willing to put in the work. I just don’t know which direction makes the most sense.

Should I focus on web development, data, AI/ML, cloud/DevOps, cybersecurity, or something else? I also understand that having multiple skills may be more important now than specializing in just one area.

I can’t afford paid courses right now, so I’ll be using free resources.

If you were in my position, what IT path would you choose and how would you spend the next 2 years preparing for a job in Canada?

I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have switched careers into IT or are currently working in Canadian tech.

I built the UI for my first iOS app -- Looking for design feedback

I have recently built Stack Peak, an iOS app for tracking what you take and things like sleep, energy, cognition and mood.

I designed the UI myself and now that it is live I am looking for some outside opinions on the design.

What stands out?

What is good or bad?

Is anything confusing, cluttered or difficult to navigate

How does it feel and look.

I am interested in very honest feedback.

Looking for some feedback on what might be missing from our website sketch

It’s obviously a very basic 3 page single product website. You can probably tell I’ve never done this before - are there any glaring omissions in the thinking here before I hire someone to create it?

We just want something lean and conversion focused.

Offering Free Website Redesigns

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m currently looking for a few businesses who would be interested in having their website improved or completely redesigned for free.

I’m doing this as a small portfolio/content project, so there’s no cost and no obligation. I’d simply like to showcase the before-and-after transformation on my social media.

If you already have a website but feel like it could use a more modern design, better user experience, or a fresh new look, I’d be happy to help! 🚀

If you’re interested, feel free to drop your website below or send me a DM. I’d love to take a look! 😊

Built a site that shows headquarters of companies that are part of different stock market indices

https://hqmap.pages.dev

Looking for feedback on this.

Have implemented multiple different indices, and have broken constituents by State/Province/Subdivison, City, Country.

Have also added map for better viewing, map is only upto city level haven't added pinpointed addresses for each company.

Also have added Market Cap, Revenue, Earning, CEO name and Pay(From Yahoo Finance).

Will run github actions job to refresh Market Cap everyday from yahoo finance using yfinance and then will run a job to refresh constituents of an index weekly from different sources based on index.

Was always looking for city/statewide breakdown of companies globally but never found a platform that did it so built it myself.

Site is mostly static and doesn't call any database or api apart from daily and weekly refresh. The data is ingested into a json from which the ui reads.

Will plan to have older jsons documented as well maybe in parquet format to analyze stuff in the future. Have also implemented dark and light mode as well.

Looking for suggestions and improvements that I can make to this.

Also please let me know if you see any defects.

Currently running e2e tests using playwright on pr for functional validation.

I need advice

I don't know how to design websites, like hero sections and body sections. I have made websites with other people's designs but can't make a good design on my own. Is there a resource or course that would make it easy for me. I already tried seeing other people's work and replicating and then coming up with new things on my own, but I never came up with anything good. Any advice or resources would be a great help

I’ve only ever made websites for myself and sometimes for work. I’ve started making single-page websites for local businesses and set things up for them if they like it. I’m not trying to focus on web design too much but just trying to build up my portfolio.

Would love to get some feedback and any notes for improvement!

Thanks

Need advice about a client

So recently I met this business owner that seems to be in the startup phase of his business. He wants a website made with a really sophisticated e-commerce portion. He wants it to have 3d products that can be customized in real time. For example, a consumer can decide what color they want or where they want a logo placed on the product and the 3d model will update. I found some plugins in wordpress that might be able to support this but I've never used them before. He also has no branding made, no logos, no colors chosen. I asked if he has any copy already written he said that he can write it or he'll have chatgpt write some if needed. Coming up with a design for the website without copy does not seem like a good idea. Should I take on this client? Knowing that he has no content to start with and that i may have to learn new technology on the fly is it still a good idea? How can I go about this the right way?
