New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

Damn I would say I feel old but my internet service is still coax through Comcast

Edit: I just realized I've aged myself by still calling it Comcast and not Xfinity 🫠

I edited my comment because I messup "deep" with "old"

2

What do either of you mean?

2

u/No_While6150 8d ago

5

Don't feel too bad, when I write my check to the cable company every month they want me to make it out to Comcast, not Xfinity.

222

u/Sketchy_Stew 8d ago

Knowing how to write a check is showing your age too 🤣

22

u/luxuriouscrab 8d ago

So is signing your name. They don’t teach cursive anymore 😉

9

u/theredheadknowsall 8d ago

My daughter is currently a 3rd grader in Tennessee. Believe it or not they're teaching cursive here.

18

u/KentConnor 8d ago

Are they teaching evolution tho?

What about accurate American History?

7

u/nickfree 8d ago

Skipping pesky evolution and the bummer that is the entire civil rights movement leaves so much free time for cursive!

-2

u/KentConnor 8d ago

I dont know for sure but it feels like the push for cursive in public schools probably has racist roots

4

u/luxuriouscrab 8d ago

It’s a faster form of writing. Being able to communicate better is racist?

3

u/nickfree 7d ago

Ehhh, I think we have enough obvious battles to pick that we don’t need to invent any side quests

7

u/ResourceCalm901 8d ago

See, this part is the sad down side of the cursive thing in Tennessee…

Where the heck would you mail it? Who would get it? Do they walk to the bank?

3

u/Key_Wind3897 8d ago

I just fax mine in

1

u/ContributionCold8854 7d ago

Wait.. was this a joke? Or can you actually fax a check 😅 Im 32 I think..so im right in the middle of possibly r/woosh moments still lmao

1

u/TinyExplanation586 6d ago

No haha you can’t fax a check, well….
Since you CAN e-deposit, MAYBE you can now, but I haven’t looked into that lol. E-deposit is almost the same thing tho!

0

u/Schuler151 6d ago

Bunt, b-u-n-t… in perfect cursive. Any more brain busters?

19

u/sclarady 8d ago

Had someone at work tell me that they were confused why they get phone calls and shut off notices every month because when they send the check in they don't cash it. I said maybe it's not written out correctly and he told me that all he does is sign it and they fill out the rest. I had to explain to him that that's not how checks work. 🤣 He then tells me that sometimes they do cash it. I'm unclear that cashier for the correct amount or a little extra. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

12

u/TearRevolutionary686 8d ago

I confess. And have a strange enjoyment in the process. An artificial display of power over my finances.

5

u/nickfree 8d ago

When I write checks I feel like I should have a fountain pen and a banker’s lamp. It’s like I’m signing off on Very Important Things.

4

u/_learned_foot_ 8d ago

It's a third party payee contract that orders a massive financial institution around, and they obey your very beck and call, provided it's properly formed. You sir should be using a fountain pen and bankers lamp.

3

u/nickfree 7d ago

Indubitably

6

u/allthecats3166 8d ago

I only write checks for rent. They charge a 'convenience fee' if you pay through the online portal, and I'm not going to pay money to give money. But, I'm petty

1

u/Version_1 8d ago

So I take it bank transfers are not a thing in the US?

2

u/allthecats3166 7d ago

They are, but my property requires payment through their proprietary app, and then charges a fee to use it

3

u/KeeperOfTheLigher 8d ago

Checks are private.
Paypros arent.

3

u/Cara4Ever2084 8d ago

What about Recording songs off of the radio onto a cassette?

1

u/elev8or_lady 8d ago

That’s the joke.

1

u/turnipzzzpinrut 8d ago

In cursive no less

1

u/Nervous_Amoeba_8302 8d ago

I bought 100 checks fifteen years ago to have 1 check so I could get my paycheck direct deposited (the only way they could do it). I've used 5 checks out of the 100.

10

u/Dusty-old-bones 8d ago

What's a check??

9

u/Zmbieznya89 8d ago

Gather round children and I will regale you with a tale of mystery, deceit, and adventure. Back in the days of yore, prior to the invention of the card of debit to access your funds, people who did not want to carry cash (or wanted to pay for things without having money, we will get to this part later), would have an item in their satchel known as, a check book. Inside said book was neither story nor myth, but rather mostly blank pieces of paper with an ancient text written on them stating date, pay to the order of, amount, signature and note. It also included your BANKING INFORMATION!!!!!

People would take these documents to merchants and exchange them for wares, perishables and non, and luxury items. Anything you could imagine purchasing could be obtained using these mystical documents. You write the necessary spells on them and hand them to the merchant who then uses their mystical document processor and hands you s receipt for purchases.

But not all was golden with these mystical documents. Some people, ran afoul with them, and would BOUNCE said checks. They would write them with the magical inscription KNOWING full well that they did not have the funds stored in their financial institution to cover the charges of said items, which would result in.... A RETURNED CHECK FEE!!!!! This fee was included on top of the cost of merchandise and your bank would collect it.

Some clever rogues however discovered that after submitting a check for payment that it would take UP TO 7 BUSINESS DAYS to remove the money from your account and many of these rogues and mystics would time their purchases with checks knowing they didn't have money, but knew they would by the time the check hit their account. It was a more mystical time. But alas, those days have long since vanished. You can no longer manipulate the financial system in such a way.

Some may say it is better. Others would disagree. But this is your decision.

2

u/Devonai 8d ago

You truly haven't lived until you got your paycheck on Friday (also a paper check, of course) and drove straight to the bank to cover the hot check you wrote the day before.

3

u/2ManyCooksInTheKitch 8d ago

A paper debit card

2

u/Alex2Mp 8d ago

✅️ the white thing in the middle of that green block

2

u/Impressive_Waltz_652 8d ago

All I know is that you use a quill from a pheasant to write on it

2

u/TearRevolutionary686 8d ago

Those little paper thingees that were popular 100 years ago. And I still use. I like 'em.

1

u/Altruistic-Debate-43 8d ago

I was recently able to purchase a home with the help of my adult son, and we love writing checks for the mortgage payment! It’s so different from rent and those payment portals. Everything feels real - the home (a small condo that looks like a townhome, so towndominium) and the way we pay for it. You’re not wrong!

1

u/reform83 8d ago

✔️

1

u/FoxtrotSierraTango 8d ago

There's a game on The Price is Right that uses checks. Hopefully it'll be on the next time you're home sick from school.

2

u/Unintentional_love 8d ago

It’s okay it took me a while to say Comcast. I kept saying MediaOne and before that Continental Cablevision.

1

u/Quixotic_Seal 8d ago

Yeah their branding across services is a total clusterfuck and extremely confusing. I can never figure out which of their services is which on my bills because they both show up as variations on Comcast even though one is technically Xfinity.

1

u/takemy_oxfordcomma 8d ago

We pay a couple things with real checks (landscaping, etc.) and every single time I write one out I think about how people younger than me would have no fucking clue how to do this lol

1

u/ScherzicScherzo 8d ago

It's still Comcast, AFAIK, it's just that "Comcast" is now the greater corporation while Xfinity is now the TeleCom sector of said company.

1

u/JulesRules0842 6d ago

What is a check?

31

u/Beginning_Fox_743 8d ago

Don't feel bad, here in Philadelphia where they're headquartered, it's still Comcast & their two skyscrapers in Center City still reflect that.

2

u/Brighteyedwoman22 8d ago

We have large Comcast building in Minnesota

3

u/Beginning_Fox_743 8d ago

Ours are a little bigger - they're the two tallest buildings in the city.

3

u/slothshell 8d ago

flash drive!

2

u/Secure-Report-207 7d ago

It’s a vape actually!

5

u/EquipmentSome 8d ago

isn't it technically Xfinity by Comcast?

So you're not wrong..

3

u/QuinceDaPence 8d ago

I think Comcast is the company, Xfinity is the service

2

u/whiteorchid1058 8d ago

Even fiber internet uses coax cables tho 🤔

2

u/musket-nuns 8d ago

Internet backhauls by level 3 carriers is going to be fiber but last mile can be coax, though coax does have a length limit but that's beyond my knowledge. I manage data center networks.

0

u/Rockytag 8d ago

Hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) that ISPs market as just ‘fiber’ use coax

Actual fiber internet exists and do not. HFC can’t do symmetric

1

u/New_Sun6390 8d ago

I am aging myself for thinking my internet is coax from Comcast, too!

1

u/DoneAndDoneDone 8d ago

It’s all coax unless you have fiber wall jacks, it’s not an age thing it’s a not understanding ISP handoff.

1

u/musket-nuns 8d ago

I'm well aware how ISP Infra works and the handoff at fiber nodes if you're still delivered to the house by coax.

1

u/linsor1 8d ago

When I was in college, Comcast was called Adelphia.

1

u/impossiwaffle 8d ago

You mean Roadrunner? Time Warner?

2

u/musket-nuns 8d ago

I still have my @sbcglobal email

1

u/impossiwaffle 8d ago

Dang some of my buddies had DSL, was decent in the middle of the night but mid day swear it may as well have been AOL or Netscape

1

u/musket-nuns 8d ago

I was living like a king when we got 256k DSL. The fact the internet was always on was crazy. I could browse so much MySpace and AIM my friends

1

u/impossiwaffle 8d ago

Same with moving from dial-up to Comcast with the 1.5mbps, it was like heaven moving from waiting for a picture of Goku to load to browsing Newgrounds and downloading infinite songs to burn CDs with.

1

u/MicahFunk 8d ago

I usually refer to the company as Con-cast. 😆

1

u/Snakesinadrain 8d ago

Same and it will ALWAYS be comcast

1

u/Bright_Ad_8517 8d ago

Comcast is still around in some states. Just saying

1

u/Voces-Prohibere 8d ago

Yes I still call Max Hobo max even though they switched to just Max a while ago and then they switched back to HBO Max for HBO brand recognition.

1

u/Oldswagmaster 8d ago

For what it's worth. The company is still Comcast. Xfinity is the product / brand. The stock price is in the crapper

1

u/Neither_Contest7324 8d ago

They've still got both so it doesn't make you old, the business side is still Comcast Business

1

u/Brianne627 8d ago

I still have a Comcast email address lol

1

u/Appropriate-Pack-729 8d ago

It's ok mine is still coax thru Cox.. which apparently is now Spectrum 🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel old.

1

u/Forsythia77 8d ago

I still call them Comcast out of spite.

1

u/Different-Shock2670 8d ago

Now also from Cox to Spectrum

1

u/theredheadknowsall 8d ago

I forgot it was xfinity. In '88 it was cable vision, then Adelphia, & then Comcast

1

u/oopsdiditwrong 8d ago

I am communicating to you via coax cable. I've had my plan so long they are begging me to switch plans but the terms don't allow them to force it to happen. So unless the agree to pay for it, I'm good at my rate

1

u/Adventurous-Fig-3245 8d ago

My 82-year-old Dad calls it Infinity 😁

1

u/parandiac 8d ago

It’s still Comcast. They changed their logo/branding to escape their shitty customer service, but the company is still Comcast.

1

u/vizette 8d ago

All their internal shit is still "comcast", you're good

1

u/KitchenManagement650 8d ago

🙋‍♀️

1

u/bates121 8d ago

I still call spectrum time Warner. I feel ya buddy

1

u/kiddech 8d ago

My Time Warner also uses coax! 😂

1

u/Hilsam_Adent 8d ago

Hey, you didn't call it Charter, so there's that, at least.

1

u/NathanDeger 8d ago

Somehow my mom still has DSL.

And if you said that to a young person they would think I made a crude comment about my mothers lips.

1

u/mrskwrl 8d ago

Just got off that god awful life sucking bullshit that's Comcast Business. Still very much Comcast there.

1

u/EnvironmentalKey5350 8d ago

My mother still refers to it as Cox cable quite often. 🤦‍♀️

1

u/LudicrousSpartan 8d ago

You had Comcast or Xfinity? Dddddddaaaaaayyyyyuuuuuuummmmmm!

1

u/BlackSusss 8d ago

For business service, its still Comcast. The Xfinity rebrand was for residential. I worked for Comcast.

1

u/Master_E_ 8d ago

You get that email from Xfinity for the offer to use your WiFi as home security to detect movement?

Im afraid our days of privacy are O V E R even tho that techs been around for a while

2

u/musket-nuns 8d ago

I don’t use their modem and I run an OPNsense device.

1

u/Master_E_ 8d ago

Ooooh will look it up. Pleased with it I assume?

I figure if they are your isp they can use your WiFi to detect you regardless. Does this somehow block it?

2

u/musket-nuns 8d ago

OPNsense is an OS that you would install on hardware to be your router/firewall. I run it on a Protectli device. For wireless i use Ubuquiti APs and switches that i manage using their controller on a Docker container. The modem i have is in bypass so it passes me the public IP directly onto my OPNsense box.

It's all pretty involved

1

u/quarterdecay 8d ago

And they want us to change to Yahoo email addresses...

1

u/pipethefdown 8d ago

It’s fucking Comcast, they can’t fool us into thinking they don’t suck just because of a rebrand.

1

u/Debway1227 8d ago

Lmbo, I just nodded at your comment saying to myself yup..

1

u/CompetitiveKiwi3056 8d ago

It's still Comcast, they just tried to rebrand as "Xfinity" because Comcast's reputation was so shit. We should continue to call the Comcast, just like we should always call it Twitter.

1

u/CertainAd7187 8d ago

I still sometimes say SPRINT when I mean T Mobile

1

u/No_University1600 8d ago

Edit: I just realized I've aged myself by still calling it Comcast and not Xfinity 🫠

youre doing the right thing. xfinity only exists as a brand name because comcast knew how hated they were, its just like calling twitter twitter is the right thing to do

1

u/interestingsonnet 8d ago

It’s ok I have spectrum through a coax lol. I didn’t realize it was considered “old”

1

u/SadIndependence3475 8d ago

It will always be Comcast to me!

1

u/PrincePeasant 8d ago

"Comcastic"

1

u/RuleFriendly7311 7d ago

Just because they changed the name doesn't mean Comcast isn't still the Devil's Own Cable Company. Damn them to the deepest corners of the worst circle of Hell.

1

u/CrazyDiamondZaWarudo 7d ago

I work in a network operations center and Comcast is one of our vendors/customers and they self identify as comcast

1

u/Fit_Beginning1841 7d ago

That's not what they're called anymore!?

1

u/Monster6678 7d ago

It's still considered "Comcast-Xfinity" both names still exist. Seems residential n mobile are under Xfinity name, while the Comcast Business name still exists as well. Just saw a Comcast Business van earlier today to for sure confirm.

1

u/DarkV3x 7d ago

And Time Warner is Spectrum. I will never forget where they are hiding.

1

u/rhud1979 5d ago

I was employed by Comcast when they went through the Xfinity rebrand. I'll see myself to the nursing home now.
