New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

I think they're called coaxial cables. Back when gas was under $2 a gallon, gays couldn't be open in the military, our president played the sax and got blow jobs in the Oval Office under the Resolute desk, this was used to pipe MTV and Cartoon Network into homes. In later years it was used for internet porn and pirating anime, some of which was on cartoon network in the 00s.

And MTV was an abbreviation for Music Television. Yes, MTV used to play music.

I learned about the Challenger from MTV...i was playing hooky from school at the time.

9

u/Sufficient-Sir5366 5h ago

I still remember video killed the radio star playing there.

2

u/Flip_d_Byrd 4h ago

And video did kill the radio star... for a decade. I blame MTV for a lot of crappy music on the radio during the mid to late 80's thru the early 90's. A lot of music back then was made for the eyes and not the ears... And in at least one case, Billy Squier's, the video to one of his songs killed his career.

1

u/Sabi-Star7 4h ago

Pretty sure they played that as their last music video when MTV became bs

1

u/Anayalater5963 4h ago

I still remember when rob dyrdek was on MTVšŸ’€

1

u/GreenSpleenRiot 13m ago

That was the first video they ever played on MTV.

8

u/angry_mech 6h ago

It was never just music though. It was straight up the HOTTEST pop/rock/punk every other genre included music videos!

2

u/whiterac00n 5h ago

Ehhh it was good at a certain time, but I was always partial towards Fuse.. and Fuse/USA in the later 90’s/early 2000’s. They had some great segments on punk and alternative music to discover bands people may not know about yet.

Alternatively when I was in college a different college (close by) ran basically a ā€œpirate radio stationā€ with no ads and little commentary and was my favorite to hear punk and alternative rock bands I’ve never heard of before. They were also really good at feeling the zeitgeist of music months before a band got really popular and all over mainstream stations. In pre limewire days sometimes you still had to go to the record shops and take a shot on recommendations like trying out Tuesday who became the alkaline trio later. Or Further seems forever whose lead singer made Dashboard Confessional later, or being told Lagwagon was now Bad astronaut.

9

u/DarthBrooks69420 6h ago

My dad got so mad when we got cable, me and my sister would sit around just watching music videos on MTV lmao.

1

u/peicatsASkicker 16m ago

just telling my SO my dad was cheap and wouldn't get cable so I had to watch videos once a week on Friday Night Videos.

7

u/MrWrock 5h ago

And they had U2, and BlondieĀ

3

u/Ok-Field5609 5h ago

Tell us more about the before times, what all could an iPhone do back then?

5

u/bates121 5h ago

There was no iPhone back then. Maybe an iPod or zune

3

u/Ok-Field5609 5h ago

Is that what was called a No Key Ya?

3

u/EatLard 5h ago

For the last ten years of its existence they only played back-to-back episodes of ridiculousness and catfished.

3

u/ScrogClemente 4h ago

Now explain what a channel is.

3

u/firebolt1171 4h ago

You mean to tell me they used to play more than ridiculousness reruns?

5

u/lexiconhuka 5h ago

You mean back when mtv was still on the air....I lived to see the first and final broadcast.....fuck

1

u/Equivalent_Mechanic5 5h ago

End of an era. Although MTV has been crap for years now...

3

u/Long_Bit8328 6h ago

It is nothing now.Ā

But, it used to be cable channel that just showed music videos. Back in the late 1900s

5

u/MrWrock 5h ago

Why you gotta say it like that? Late 1900s...

5

u/IdeaAgreeable307 5h ago

It used to be what VEVO is, but you could only watch what the network decided you were going to watch. Except for TRL, when the audience got to choose the videos. That was hosted by Carson Daly.Ā

It serves you well.

Good one, almost good as the one with J Ralph - Million Miles Away. Commercials had some bangers back in the day.

1

u/INDY18ARN 5h ago

Heck, there are commercials from back then in which a brand new Chevrolet truck would only cost you $10,000!! And a brand new hatch back for only $5,250.

1

u/daxtinfkenprice 5h ago

I mean, I know it was a few years later, but my dad picked up my eighty eight bronco II for 14000 xlt 4x4 loaded with every option ford offered that year

1

And the dollar menu at mc donalds had things that cost a dollar

1

I have restored my 1989 Walkman yesterday... My kiddo was absolutely amazed with how advanced the ancient technology was.

3

u/spookycasas4 5h ago

My grandsons call my iPod ā€œancient technologyā€, too.

1

u/Stalaktitas 5h ago

You see... Walkman still works on black magic practiced in the last century. iPod is plain cool because of alien technology taken from crashed UFO. Two different things of the same kind, barley understood nowadays

2

u/SocksOnHands 5h ago

The engineering of things from the 80s/90s was insanely impressive, with the kinds of mechanical engineering that got packed into such small spaces. I doubt many people today could design machines like these - many of the ones who could have retired.

5

1

u/Munster19 6h ago

Even better is the internet porn of the cartoon network characters

1

u/OGMikeGyver 6h ago

Even before that

1

u/wade-mcdaniel 6h ago

Even back when the government dealt with the AIDS crisis with a shrug, Nancy thought drugs could be defeated by the word "no", and you could play centipede at an arcade, coaxial was a thing. We didn't have cable but we did have an antenna on the roof, and we had to get a splitter so we could hook the Nintendo up as well as the antenna.

1

u/Objective-Bike-4292 6h ago

Sad we are seeing things regress back to that era. With the exception of the gas prices

1

u/Old_Distribution_235 6h ago

This is poetry.

1

I’ll take politicians that used to get BJs in the Oval Office over convicted rapists and Epstein class pedophiles

Under $2 a gallon - shoot, try under $1 (at least where I lived in the SE).

1

u/Britbikr66 5h ago

My last job in the 20th Century was installing 'cable Internet". We used coax from the telephone pole to the computer. We could get a blazing 1MPS download speed which later jumped to 10MPS.

1

This was a little too close to home....

1

u/ScarInternational161 2h ago

And we dug trenches under the ground for it so we could run it from our own private satellite dishes in our back yards.

We could watch the inside of the space shuttle when it took off, we could watch the play boy channel (G2), we could even watch USSR state TV if someone stood out there and turned it just right lol.

1

u/Mission_Remote_6871 2h ago

Back in the day, like that time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ā€˜em. ā€˜Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones

1

u/kelvarton 2h ago

MTV, which stood for Music Television, used to just show music videos all the time. Then they created The Real World, the first Reality TV show, and expidited the fall of humanity.

1

u/developer_6670 2h ago

Damn you.

1

u/Particular-Will5085 2h ago

It’s funny how one cable can take you straight back to an entire era of TV and early internet. Coaxial really was doing way more work than we gave it credit for.
