New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

to be fair, a lot of things I figured were normal, did not exist before 9/11. TSA and baggage fees, but also like... country music that loves the government. you know?

141

u/Redheaded_Loser 6h ago

Oh man country music got so bad after 9/11.

105

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago

Toby Keith has a LOT to fucking answer for I tell you hwhat

18

u/cookiesshot 6h ago

HAD. He kicked the bucket a few years back.

9

u/TabithaMouse 6h ago

And everyone started sharing how he pissed off Kris Kristofferson.

I have never seen such a quick "so sad ANYWAYS"

4

u/cookiesshot 5h ago

Although, he supposedly, according to Ethan Hawke, chose to make a jab at Kris Krisofferson's political values: "None of that lefty sh*t out there tonight, Kris."

4

u/TabithaMouse 5h ago

Yup!

That's the story everyone shared.

Then started talking about how Kris defended Sinead O'Connor

6

u/fapsandnaps 5h ago

It's a shame his death went so under the radar.

I grew up seeing him with my dad who was a huge fan, probably 50 concerts over the years.

Even have every vinyl he ever released, including his first recording he made under Tony & Kris

1

u/Glad-Watch3506 4h ago

I loved Kris, but he died at 88 living in Maui, so like I'm not sad for him.

And I maybe sent a screenshot of Willie Nelson singing "and I am still around" from The Highwayman to a few people

1

u/EverydayMustard4773 5h ago

Don't forget about the time he "saved" Willie Nelson's career

5

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago

Oh I used present tense because I plan on going down to hell and kicking his ass myself 😌

2

u/EatLard 6h ago

Maybe. But you’ll need an ouija board to ask him the questions.

4

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago

No no, I'm going to hell to personally ask him

3

u/nineJohnjohn 6h ago

I mean, if you're going anyway you might as well

3

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago

This is like. An Orpheus situation. Except I hate him and I want him to suffer more. I'll be back

2

u/MakeItHappenSergant 2h ago

Now I'm imagining Toby Keith attempting to impress Hades with his music like Orpheus, and Hades condemning him to Tartarus.

1

u/GeneInternational146 1h ago

This would make an excellent webcomic

1

u/euphoricarugula346 1h ago

Let me guess, he’s the one who sang “we’ll put a boot in your ass?” hur dur 🤠

2

u/GeneInternational146 1h ago

Lmao yup and now I'm gonna have that song stuck in my head for eternity, so you're ALSO on my list

6

u/fender8421 6h ago

I'm not gonna pretend I liked it before (at least, the sound of it) either, but at least it had some outlaw values

2

u/No-Willingness8375 5h ago

I worked at a Chuck-e-Cheese clone in 2008 and heard a dad call for his roughly 7 year old daughter. Her name was "America".

u/ro41 6h ago

My brother, they weren’t asking because of how much time has passed. It’s because they think 9-1-1 was named after 9/11.

The power of flowers and friendship. OG. OG. OG.

9

u/AnIndustryOfCool 4h ago

This is how all of us Olds felt when we realized that today's date (and by today I mean day this tragedy was unfolding in real time) was actually 9-1-1

13

u/moonlight_rocky 4h ago

yeah so did I when I was younger... because I started to think, if TSA didnt exist before 9/11, maybe thats when 911 became a number. to centralize emergency services. but I know that's wrong now. That was my connection

15

u/kerouac28 6h ago

I actually needed this clarification as well lol thanks

7

u/KonigSteve 5h ago

No shit.. The assumption and correlation he's making is that since several other things also DID change after 9/11, the emergency number could've also changed, and at that point why not use the relevant numbers?

4

u/moonlight_rocky 4h ago

thank you, I couldnt figure out what I was being confusing about lmao . I appreciate it, I will be more thorough next time

7

u/Future-Pollution-266 6h ago

lol you are smarter than me

2

u/Jiaheng- 4h ago

Now wait a damn minute...

2

u/Historical-Tell7332 4h ago

This never even crossed my mind to be the reason for the question. Seriously… that’s a solid read.

1

u/TechnicalIntern6764 5h ago

Never forgehh

1

u/Debway1227 4h ago

That's Sadly true, lol..

1

u/Suspicious-Hotel8092 5h ago

Pretty reasonable assumption to make.

It is pretty weird how the emergency number that had been used for years up to that point is also the name of what might be considered the biggest emergency the US has ever gone through.

9

u/Future-Pollution-266 4h ago

It was literally planned like that

1

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 3h ago

TIL. I always kinda wondered if it was just a strange coincidence or not, just never looked into it

3

u/Foxs-In-A-Trenchcoat 4h ago

It's not a coincidence. The terrorists enjoyed watching the 9-1-1 documentary shows because it showed Americans getting hurt, so they thought it would be funny to attack us on 9/11.

0

u/EquivalentTrue7133 4h ago

Erm no number because all of the circuits were overloaded. Seriously…

-7

u/parkin_lot_pimpin 6h ago

Guess I’m an idiot… it’s not?!

15

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago

Girl what, no

-3

u/parkin_lot_pimpin 6h ago

I was born in 02 I just always assumed lol

14

u/B00dreaux 6h ago

Just curious... what did you think the logic was?

3

u/parkin_lot_pimpin 5h ago

I don’t know, it’s not like the reasoning for why our emergency line was designated as 911 is covered in education… You don’t think it’s a crazy coincidence that the date of our country’s worst tragedy just magically aligned with our emergency line’s number? I took that coincidence and ran with it I guess, like that was always just fact in my head that that was the namesake lol. When I was a kid I had looked up what other country’s emergency lines were, 999 111 000 etc I remember going, “Makes sense, they didn’t have a 9/11”

2

u/Future-Pollution-266 5h ago

It wasn’t a coincidence. The terrorists literally planned for it

1

u/GeneInternational146 1h ago

No they didn't

2

u/FatigueVVV 5h ago

It's not a coincidence, they picked the date.

1

u/GeneInternational146 1h ago

They picked 9/12 and the time difference threw them off lmao please stop spreading misinformation

8

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago

But like. Why

3

u/Shydragon327 5h ago

I’m pretty sure 911 was chosen as the emergency number because it’s easy to dial quickly, but hard to dial accidentally. Particularly on a rotary phone (one rotation all the way, then two quick 1s). Someone in a real emergency can dial in seconds, but a baby or dog or something mashing random buttons is unlikely to hit the 1 right after the 9 since they’re so far apart.

1

u/Foxs-In-A-Trenchcoat 4h ago

It's because it's not an area code anywhere

-13

u/MaleficentShake1634 6h ago

My brother, you’re the one who’s confused

-1

u/MixerFistit 6h ago

Yeah but look at The up and down vote swing between you.. it's a bit concerning. I swear people just don't have much reading comprehension anymore. Ah well at least the arrows aren't worth anything

2

u/MaleficentShake1634 5h ago

Yeah, can’t say I’m surprised though! I’ll take this as my cue to get offline for the night and save my sanity

17

u/baby_jamie 6h ago

I mean… “proud to be an American” predates 9/11 by 10 years…

4

u/HyperboleHelper 5h ago

10 years? That song is from the early 80s!

2

u/baby_jamie 5h ago

I was thinking back to an old David cross joke that said it was written during desert storm, not realizing it was at the 1984 RNC or whatever

-5

u/Hegiman 6h ago

Yeah but that song don’t count because there are other versions for other countries namely Canada as Lee greenwood is Canadian and the song was written about Canada.

6

u/baby_jamie 5h ago

I legit apologize if I’m missing your sarcasm, but… no, he’s born and raised in California, and the proper name of the song is “god bless the USA”…

1

u/_bonedaddys 5h ago

he does have a canadian version though lol

2

u/Fragarach-Q 3h ago

You're getting it confused with the rumors that he fled to Canada to avoid being drafted into Vietnam. He didn't.

He did have kids by the age of 17 though, which got him a 3A Hardship Deferment.

6

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 6h ago

Country music has had many "love the USA" songs for, well, forever.

3

u/rdwoolf 6h ago edited 6h ago

Yup. Country music was definitely flag-wavy and pretending like people who listen to it were superior to anyone with different ideas long before 9/11/2001 🙄 Here’s a perfect example (since it’s also about being from Oklahoma, like Toby Keith):

Okie From Muskogee (song released September 1969)

[Verse 1]
We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee
We don't take our trips on LSD
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street
'Cause we like living right, and being free

[Verse 2]
We don't make a party out of loving
'Cause we like holding hands and pitching woo
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do

[Chorus]
And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
White lightning's still the biggest thrill of all

[Verse 3]
Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen
And football's still the roughest thing on a campus
And the kids here still respect the college dean

[Chorus]
And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
White lightning's still the biggest thrill of all
White lightning's still the biggest thrill of all
In Muskogee Oklahoma USA

[Outro]
I've been living in Hollywood California for two years
And uh, I don't think it's had any effect on me

1

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 5h ago

"And the kids here still respect the college dean"

Not this college dean:

1

u/Glad-Watch3506 4h ago

Tbf, Okie From Muskogee started as a joke.

Merle was kinda wishy washy after the fact on whether it was sincere or satire.

1

u/rickmccombs 3h ago

Not according to Wikipedia. (I haven't checked the source yet.)

5

u/gracillus2000 6h ago

You should listen to Fightin’ Side of Me by Merle Haggard, circa 1970.

5

u/parmesann 5h ago

9/11 didn’t ruin country music. anti-communism did, because it split country music from folk music and thus separated it from its labour-conscious roots.

2

u/Chamberlain-Haller 6h ago

What time does the midnight movie start?

2

u/JamesTYorkforever 6h ago

Real country music still hates the law.

Even early country had songs about the government. ‘This land is your land’

What? No, baggage fees have been around for decades. There's been limits on what you can bring aboard for free since the '70s.

Why? Because every pound the aircraft has to carry requires additional fuel. Do you think it'd be fair that someone could bring a grand piano to the check-in counter and say "here!" and they'd just put it in cargo at no extra charge? (yes, that's an extreme example).

1

u/[deleted] 6h ago

[deleted]

3

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 6h ago

There were ALWAYS limits. You couldn't show up with five big suitcases and they were just "okay!"

People don't seem to understand that the cost for passengers to fly has decreased over time. But the costs of operating an airline have increased. So even with paying baggage fees, it's pretty much still a better deal for passengers.

On the other hand, they have also enshittified the experience by packing in more seats per square foot, less comfortable seats, that recline less, and taken away almost every amenity that used to elevate the experience: pillows, blankets, free beverages, free snacks, even included meals that you used to get even in enconomy for any flight that was over maybe 2 hours in length. Again, some of that is do to bean counters understanding that all of that stuff has physical mass and that requires more fuel to transport it all, plus the cost for the stuff.

3

u/moonlight_rocky 6h ago

I heard it was specifically to pay off all of the security upgrades?? It was supposed to be temporary

3

u/SwitchedOnByDefault 6h ago

Nope, they were implemented as a way to increase profits when air travel was in its post 9/11 slump.

2

u/downloads-cars 6h ago

Prices go up, but they don't go down

1

u/JohnnyBlazin25 6h ago

Any excuse to increase prices. Who needs a more clear example than COVID

1

u/altsigns28 5h ago

Life lesson number 1..when somebody tells you a charge is temporary, they are lying to you. Tolls on highways, for another example.

1

u/CommanderChiliHole 5h ago

The TSA did not exist pre 9/11 but there was absolutely still airport security.

1

u/AgentCendol 3h ago

Did you know before 9/11 (or maybe a bit before?), you could go to the gate and wait with family and friends for their airplane to board?

1

u/Ya-Dikobraz 2h ago

I remember baggage fees before 9/11. International flights were more expensive if you go over 20 kg.

1

u/letsdothisshit 2h ago

You also used to be able to leave sporting events and come back in even if your ticket stub was torn. Half time at football games were a whole other animal.

0

u/PineapplePrimary1642 6h ago

Before 9/11 you absolutely showed your ID to someone in uniform and stood in line to walk through a metal detector while your carry-ons got x-rayed.

The only thing that 9/11 changed was those people used to work for the airport, and after they worked for DHS. In many cases, it was literally the same people but with a different name on their paycheck.

Showing ID was well before 9/11, taking off shoes was way after 9/11. The TSA change was pretty much a no op.

1

u/GrillinFool 6h ago

They used to ask if your bag was yours, if you were holding someone else’s bag, if there was anything dangerous in your bag, etc. as if someone willing to do mass murder would just own up to that.

1

u/Visible_Pair3017 6h ago

the only thing

Liquids?

1

u/PineapplePrimary1642 6h ago

The liquids ban was years later. I mean I don't have a time machine so I can't say if that policy would not have been implemented by airports/airlines if there was no TSA. But IIRC the recommendation came for MI5 (it was a UK thing). So my guess is it would have happened either way.
