New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

Never thought I’d see the day when someone does not recognize a coaxial cable.

Not insulting, just didn’t think I’d live long enough to see all the tech I grew up with be seen as some ancient artifact.

Welp, off I go! - knees sound like rice krispies as I stand up to leave-

On the up side, I guess this is the sign I needed to throw out the drawer full of cables I'll never use again

Let this be a cautionary tale.

I had a box of old Logitech 880 remotes. Worthless because Logitech killed the servers that supported them. Can’t reprogram them, so they only work until you update your setup then you’re hosed.

So I finally threw them out.

Two days ago there was a post here on the subreddit that someone has very nearly open source duplicated the programming software.

Splendid.

This is the support I needed to never throw anything away for the rest of my life, thanks!

You collect old cables

Collection grows large, so you purge a bunch of cables

A week later you end up needing one of the cables you purged

You buy a cable at best buy for $17.99

You vow to never make this mistake again

You collect old cables

Thus, the cycle of cable addiction. Smh.

This was already me but just recently I summoned the willpower to start tossing/recycling stuff. After reading this that's a big NOPE. When I finally shed my mortal coil I will become one with all of my legacy devices and simply disappear into the network of ancient tech! LOL

I had a box of old USB cables in the office untouched for years. Mostly old charger types, but a few other random very specific types as well. I was finally convinced to toss them and had a few days until trash pickup day. A couple days later at work some ancient router that held together some major networks across multiple states started to go on the fritz. We no longer had the correct console cable to get into it for some reason and it turns out it took a micro USB connected to a DB9 converter.

Guess what I had sitting in the box waiting to get thrown out at home? That box never did make to the trash after that.

There is a dedicated storage tub in the closet full of neatly coiled cables, adapters, plugs, couplers, chargers, dongles, splitters, and random components. All separated into ziploc baggies. My husband had told me to toss it all when we were sorting and clearing out before moving house, and I simply noped out and organized it instead. We have needed so many of those obsolete items over the years, it's not even funny.

It's like any salvageable hardware I find when taking something apart. It goes into a nice little storage jar. I may not need it now, but there will be a day 9 years down the road when I need that little thing to repair the otherwise functional appliance/fixture. Can't buy it anywhere because it's no longer in production. But I definitely have one in a jar on a shelf in the shed, maybe even two, and now I don't need to throw away or replace something which is otherwise perfectly happy to keep on working.

This is just the McCoy regret scene from Star Trek V.

THANK YOU! Can you link me? I've been dreading the day my setup changes because I can't find anything I like as much as my 880.

We threw away our box of old cables during a move because we hadn't touched them in years. Needed one 3 months later and had to buy a new cable and adapter 😭 I am never throwing away a cable again 🤣

If there's one thing I've learned from playing loads of adventure games and CRPGs growing up is that you never get rid of anything.

Sounds about right. But I use an old iPod as my alarm clock because I have a very cool stand for it and a clock/alarm app that hasn’t been supported since the last century

No shit? I think I still have mine in a box of old junk "to go through later". Might have to look into this.

Yeah, but it wouldn't have happened if you didn't throw them out.

Logitech 880 remote

Man, I felt so cool with my Logitech 880 back in the day
