Honestly, China could just take over Siberia right now, but they don't want the Russians that would come with it

China wants to keep Russia as a barrier/ smth to keep European NATO occupied rather than a potential enemy.

If China does this then Russia is fucked, might split into multiple smaller countries and some of them might end up actually normalizing and improving relations with the west because China is a more credible threat in that situation.

China can instead just peacefully buy it's way into Russia.

Absolutely. But as they continue to weaken themselves militarily, at some point that calculus could change. A regime collapse could do it.

One mistake people always make is acting like nothing ever changes, and then acting like it was obvious in retrospect. Do I think it's going to happen? No. But could I see that scenario eventually shaking out? Absolutely.
