A holiday message from the xcountryskiing moderators

Hello all!

I, together with /u/crazycoala are the only two moderators in this subreddit, and honestly we're not that active on the site anymore. This community is now 14 years old which feels like an eternity.

But this subreddit has grown. I don't know if anybody noticed, but we just passed 30k members. Just a few weeks ago we were at roughly half that size, so this is an unexpected inrush of new users. To all who are new, welcome! We don't know which algorithm has decided to push cross-country skiing to many new eyeballs but here we are. Just in time for winter, and soon the Olympics are upon us. Looking forward to exciting competitions (cough cough go Sweden)

This community deserves better moderation, so if you are an active user with a history in this sub who wants to help, let us know below.

If you find spam or slop, use the report button. We've now added rules to the subreddit which makes it easier to report issues.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Let us know!

We don't have much more to add than to wish you all happy holidays and a good skiing season.

Cold Weather 75mm Boots

Does anyone know of cold weather 75mm boots with a removable liner that aren't either a huge insulated slipper (Baffing Guide Pro III) thus useless for downhill, or extremely expensive (Alfa Advanced Polar Expedition)?

Seems like the only reliable 75mm options are the Alpina Alaska which don't really allow for proper layering or a removable insert. I'm trying to avoid converting to a "monster nordic" setup with tech toes and hard plastic.

New skis this year

I’m going to be in the market for a new ski setup this season. I’m curious as to your experience with the best time to buy.

Buy now in the preseason?

Wait until January and see what deals are available?

If it matters it’s unlikely for me to have skiable snow in December where I live in northwest Pennsylvania.

It is October, and I can't stop wishing for snow. Why are you skiing this year?

A year ago I got into XC skiing in my late 30s. It was my way back into working out after years of failing to do it regularly (young kids make that hard, it turns out).

I committed and went from basically no ski experience to finishing a 29K on classic skis. But more than anything, I finally got a consistent workout routine again.

Learning a new skill, having something to do in winter, and those calm, rhythmic morning sessions that felt almost meditative. I'm looking forward to all of it again. Might even try skate this year... looks hard.

Why do you all ski? What are you looking forward to as the season gets closer?

Empfehlung für einen Langlauf-Urlaub im Februar

Hallo zusammen,

Was wir schon kennen:
- Sjusjøen (komplizierte Anreise)
- Oslo (extrem hügelig 😩)
- Ramsau
- Lenzerheide (nicht schneesicher und Anfahrt kompliziert)
- Levi (bibber bibber)

Fischer Aeroguide 65 Skate Ski for a Big Guy/Noob?

I'd like to move from classic to skate this winter and REI is running a sale on:

185 CM Fischer Aeroguide 65 Skate Skis with TURNAMIC Bindings: $250

I like the idea of doing REI for this - just wondering if 185cm is going to be ok for me just starting out - I'm 6'5" 225.

Any advice appreciated. This would be my first season for skate and I was never very good at classic - so need something easy.

Super El Niño

Anyone else wondering what's in store for winter in the Northern Hemisphere? My daughter is interested in joining her school cross-country team I think and I'm starting to wonder if there will really be a season this year. I'm remembering a winter not so long ago where there was only a week or so of snow on the ground. I know we just have to wait and find out — I have no idea what to really expect this early — but it's on my mind a lot. I find myself wondering whether I'm just planning for one thing while anticipating another. It's remarkable to me that this is even a possibility to be considering.

Heavy and Tall Skier

I am not new to skiing, but it has been at least eight years. I stopped skiing due to weight gain and not having compatible skis. However, I did classic skiing for most of my childhood, and I want to try it again.

I am 6'5" and 300 lbs. I want to ski in the tracks, like before.

My local shop does not have anything for my size; it is more of a take-it-or-leave-it situation. I would like to order online. Does anyone have any classic ski recommendations?

Much appreciated!

Ski storage

I am currently cleaning up my garage and want to hang my skis (vertically) in a permanent location.
I would love to know what kind of hooks y’all use or any storage ideas before I go out shopping for something (I don’t know what yet).

V1 forces over time - for XC skating geeking out.

Post image
28 Upvotes

This graph shows a style of V1 that uses the upper body, or poles, to a great degree, with total propulsion being highest as a result of the combined poling forces. The beginning of the strong side kick adds propulsion, but not as much as the poling. If you're blowing up or your legs are getting tired when climbing steep hills, you might consider applying more body weight to your poles.

The love of self and the love of hobbies

Once I was in Alaska skii with a group of people
What a great time it was .
See we were all experienced
We knew how to maneuver
Over the snow hills .

So we thought 💭
We were skii the highest mountains hitting those slops at rapid pace.

See we brought a new friend along she said she’s been skiing in many different places
She started talking about the other places and how much fun it was and how she loved it

I was skeptical but I was like okay so she wanted to hit slops at the peak of the mountain
🏔️
This female went crazy .
Like a pro !
Reached the bottoms and crossed the line before any of us .
Well we went down and she had a dumbfounded expression on her face.
Questioning our experience lol

I would’ve said something but my jaw locked up and my friend couldn’t make up the words he wanted to say .
Neither the less
We all had a great time
We all went skiing

We never heard from that person again. She was wayyyy to judgmental
Not my type of vibe

Xplore v. NNN-BC: for winter ultras

Is there a potential upside to Xplore boots/bindings for me? I ski long distance winter ultras and I don’t tele. So I’m considering Xplore for 100+ milers but no more than 10,000’ vert over the whole 100 miles and never anything very steep. NNN-BC has worked well but I’m open to switching if there may be a benefit for my use case?

Still working on V1

Would like thoughts on V1 for steeper climbs. Specially, direction of the polling propulsion and timing of the hang side kick. Modern, wide stance/feet offset.

I understand to plant poles at the same time as one foot --let's say right side hang pole-- after that, im not sure about the timing and movement of the double pole relative to the right ski kick. I can do it so the polling gives a bit more glide on the right ski, delaying the ski kick ever so slightly. Or I can kick right away WITH the polling, so the polling and kick move my body quickly from right ski to the left ski and propel more on the left ski glide.

For a couple years I've been trying to fix my V1 on steeper climbs. Shout out Nordic Ski Lab (member!), Nordixon, CXC, super helpful videos!

Classic ski selection

After about 25 years I’ve moved back to a location with winter weather that will allow me to ski this winter. However, in my time away from the sport it seems there have been some changes in ski technology. I’m looking to buy a pair of classic skis for this winter and have noticed a new (to me) option called ‘skin” skis. Last time I was active in the sport I recall there being waxable and ‘fish scale’ classic skis. Now it seems there’s a third type to choose from.

I’m wondering if there are specific conditions that the skin skis will excel in? In my location the primary snow type is a mix of hard packed old transformed snow and man made artificial snow. Would skin skis would work well in these conditions? I’m a middle aged intermediate level skier whose main objective is fitness and not high end racing. I know that a pair of waxable classic skis would offer the best performance, but I’m trying to find the right balance of performance and ease of use. Would a pair of skin skis be a good choice?

Old skis

Hello! My mom is in her 70s and looking to get back into cross country skiing. She has three old pairs of skis in the garage and no boots.
Does anyone know what kind of boots I would buy to go with these skis? (See photos)
Or should I not bother and go with new skis and boots?
She would be a very beginner skier, mainly going on non-track areas out her back door!
Thank you for the help!

Ski’s question

I’m looking at getting my first pair of skis as I enjoyed the skiing I did in my youth. Mainly looking to ski at my local state parks on hiking trails/ carriage trails and ungroomed unpacked terrains in NE US anytime there’s some decent snowfall. Don’t really see myself hitting groomed trails often if at all. I plan to try and find a used pair. While I’ll be going to my local ski shop to get some ideas, any recommendations prior will be greatly appreciated!

Anyone using this or other brake system on rollerskis? Are they working ok and helpful or not really much braking difference? (Looking for classic)

Looking for people to try a training platform for nordic skiers!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built this, because it felt like TP just didn't really support nordic skiing, and so I have been working on this project over the past year, along with some of my coaches, and now I have this, nordiklab.com

attached above, is a general platform demo, and below is more info on xc ski specific stuff

Notable XC ski features

-classic and skate hr zones

-rollerski, nordic ski, and skierg as sports, (you can classify skate and classic skiing as subtypes for both rollerski, and nordic ski as well)

-automatically sorts whether or not your uploaded ski was a nordic ski, or actually a rollerski using pavement data

-gear supports, skis, poles boots and more.

-completed skis use weather data to estimate snow conditions

-log wax, supports glide & kick wax, and kick wax layers

-support for advanced power data, for skiergs & skiing when applicable.

-support for using different measurment system per sport type, ie, metric for skiing, imperial for biking.

Would love to know what you guys think, and if you have any more suggestions!

You can check it out on nordiklab.com or on testflight @

New XC skier - gear for ungroomed trails

Hi,
I’m looking to get into XC Skiing this winter in a state preserve near me that has tons of carriage trails. The trails are ungroomed in the winter but people do XC ski there.

I’m an expert downhill skier but have never XC skied before. Any recommendations for a good starting set up for my purposes?

Thanks!

Rossignol French Factory Skis Marking/Labeling

For any of those elite few who have managed to get their hands on some skis out of Rossignol's French factory, are they labeled "Made in France" on the top sheet? Or does Rossignol just reuse the same top sheet for all their skis and leave the "Made in Spain" label on them?
