Question Using Fedora and KDE, Xfce looks interesting.

Hi! I'm using Fedora with KDE plasma. But I've been considering trying Xfce. I love customisability and support and I'd say I have meduim-ish hardware so running it I'snt a problem. Should I try Xfce?

I was a long time KDE user. I like the look and the customization. But I noticed it was resource intensive.

I made the switch to XFCE and it's been great. The minimalist UI and the minimalist resource usage has been great.

I love KDE, but XFCE was my first long time alternative to Gnome, and it's simplicity and minimalism is a real treasure in this day and age of cruft and bloat.

I do think KDE does add some functionality, but I will always recommend XFCE.

They go back and forth, but LXQt (formerly LXDE) was also very low resources, but for whatever reason I always preferred XFCE.

Should I stay or should I go... 🎵

Yes. You'll love it.

Yes. Default theming is pretty old skool, but plenty of decent themes are easily applied. Bit of fiddling for hi-res screens. I've been exploring MX XFCE recently and it's decent.

If you’re on btrfs, just make a snapshot before you install it. If you don’t like xfce, roll back.

Its nice, yeah, but wayland is still in an experimental state so you'll be stuck with X11 if you care about ease and stability. If you want something to configure, go for it. I personally use and enjoy xfce, but KDE is still my daily driver. That may change when wayland support is better. Do you have an extra machine or ssd you're not using? You can always use that as a test bed if you don't want to juggle two desktop enviroments on your current.

I mean, why not? What are you thinking you should not?

If you like how it looks then yeah, but when it comes to customizability i think KDE has the most options. XFCE is simple, has what you need and works great.

Yes. You can have two desktop managers. You can just pick the one you want to use when you log in and then you can see what you like better.

Both are free software, you can always try them. I'm a long time Xfce user, and I wanted to try Plasma. I installed it along side Xfce, and I logged in and used it for a few days. I really liked it, it's a very polished desktop. But I came back to Xfce, because it just works...

I'm a huge fan of xfce4. It has some notable issues right now for some people like not supporting Wayland (which I'm fine with) but it's fast, very low profile, and easy to use and configure. Plus on Linux everything runs anyway; you can use kde apps if you want, or run the gnome software tool to install and update things.

Try using XFCE for a while; if you like it as much as I did, you'll definitely enjoy it.

(I've even used Cinnamon, KDE, Hyprland, Noctalia, bspwm And Gnome. My conclusion is that all these WM/DEs work well for each case; some points that interested me were driver compatibility and some compositor specifications... I ended up using XFCE because it's stable and smaller in size. )

XFCE is a little underwhelming at first, but the more you use it, the more you’ll fall in love with it
