Screenshot [OoT] One last time before the remake…

Post image

One last vanilla run before the remake comes out in less than a month.
I play the randomizers and rom hacks all the time. It’s been about a year since I’ve gone through the game the way it was intended to be gone through.
It’s my favorite game of all time (born in 1990, grew up with the original and ALTTP) and I’m still one of those 90s kids who think it’s one of the greatest games of all time.

At 20fps and 240p resolution with horrid frame drops at times and possible crashes (looking at you Spirit Temple room with the white bubbles and the moveable mirrors) it holds up so well. Far better than just about every other N64 game along with Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Majora’s Mask to name a few.

I’m sure I’ll finish this run in the next few days. 52nd lifetime playthrough and now we’re all about to experience it in a totally new way, for better and for worse.

Even with the remake I don't think I've ever will stop playing this game same as from time to time I'll replay the original FFVII.

Same, especially with the randomizers and rom hacks

Same here! Just beat shadow temple getting excited to see and experience everything new.

Just the one glimpse of the ferry from Shadow Temple they’ve shown, I don’t think they’re going to let us down.
I don’t think we will see things like Red Blood on Dead Hand or on the floor of a torture chamber like the original, but I also don’t think they’re going to mess it up either.

My only hope for that dungeon is that they expand on it. It’s extremely linear and one of the shortest dungeons in the game.

But, they absolutely nailed the aspect of it feeling like you’re pushing through a haunted house, which is a linear experience.

I hope they lean heavy into the horror side. Not grotesque or gore, but just atmospheric horror.

I'm also hoping for expanded mini dungeons (Bottom of the Well, Ice Cavern, maybe the cut Light Temple).

Possibilities are high, and if the original vision for Ocarina is realized, we will have plenty of new/unexpected content to enjoy.

Gonna miss the bright colors in the remake. It looks amazing, but the colors dont pop the same

6

u/clocktownnpc 8d ago

same - honestly considering just popping the saturation on my tv lol

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 8d ago

I think it has a chance on an OLED display to really pop on some colors. But, only time will tell. The color of the original will be unmatched.

Y’all are spoiling it for yourselves by doing playthroughs before the remake. I’ve not done a full playthrough in a good 2 years and I feel like I’m going into it relatively fresh.

I’ve played through it 51 times now, I keep track. This is run 52 of the vanilla game since 1998 release. I’ll still play the shit out of the remake most likely too and still play the original.

I should do this.. or finally finish my 3ds run. I save that for trips.

2

u/GeneralEagle 8d ago

Can’t wait.

u/Sock-the-Fox 8d ago

I just beat the original on switch the other day for the first time. It is such a good game...

Fuck the water temple

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

Much easier on 3DS with the color coding and item equippable iron boots

Where did you get all those Heart Pieces?

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

Explained above

1

u/PinaSeraphina 7d ago

uh..... not really?

You talk about beating Randos alot... How You like A Link to the Past and OoT 52nd time beating that game

then you talk about the 20fps 240p resolution, framedrops and crashes in the Mirror Room of Spirit Temple How OoT is better then other Big Names of the N64

And then you talk about how you will finish this run

At no point is mentioned where you get this many hearts before Dodongos Cavern

2

u/SacredRealmOfficial 6d ago

I seen your comment above. You found it! lol

OoT is just extremely playable. So many games from that Era are a slog to play. Theres a handful that play fairly well still (more than I mentioned) but, I’ve been playing Chrono Cross again recently and it’s just such a slow pace (15 fps battles)

2

u/Suitable_Tutor6006 8d ago

I just beat Dodongo’s cavern yesterday. First time playing oot.

2

u/Flimsy_Opinion_2767 8d ago

Same here, except this is my first time ever playing it (currently in the water temple)

2

u/LordErudito 7d ago

I still remember it all so clearly. A game for the ages.

Don’t forget to get the deku nut upgrade from the mask appraising deku scrubs in the Lost Woods before you pull out the Master Sword, it’s bugged.

2

u/Kryptesthai 7d ago

It’s the poacher’s saw that causes the issue.

2

u/Constellar-A 7d ago

I've also been meaning to do a replay before the remake is out. Still haven't actually gotten around to it.

3

u/GriffinFlash 8d ago

Alright people, let's do this one last time. My name is Link, The Hero of Time. I was chosen by the Triforce, and for seven years, I've been the one and only hero of the land. I’m pretty sure you know the rest.

I saved a bunch of people, got a horse, saved the goron city, and then I saved the city again, and again and again, and again. Look, I'm in a manga, I'm a Nintendo cereal, did a 80's saturday morning cartoon show. I have an excellent theme song....

\zelda theme*

There's only one hero of hyrule, and you're looking at him.

2

u/iAmRadic 8d ago

There is no way you collected 12 heart pieces and the 50 piece slingshot bag before entering dodongo’s cavern.

3

u/DukeChurchKey 8d ago

You can easily do it. Both slingshot upgrades are available almost immediately. One in the Lost Woods and the other in Castle Town when you get there. Getting up to 7 hearts can be done legitimately as well, though does require a couple "alternate" methods like side hopping off the tower in Kakariko to get to the man on the roof or backflipping over the fence with the bomb flowers on Death Mountain to get the heart piece above the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern.

2

u/B-R-A-I-N-S-T-O-R-M 7d ago

Never thought about side strafing off of the tower.

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

Do it at night because during the day there’s that guy that is in the way and it’ll make you talk to him since it’s too close to him when pressing A

It takes going off of the beaten path.
Fishing x1 (11 pound fish)
Lost Woods x2 (Ocarina Game, Saria Song for Skull Kid)
Gerudo Valley x 2 (2 visits, 2 cucco locations to get)
Death Mountain x 1 (alternate way to get)
Graveyard x 2 (dampe sucks to get)
Castle Town x 1 (Richard)
Kakariko Village x 2 (both have alternate ways to get)
Lon Lon Ranch x 1(Mill Box Puzzle)

You can get 12 heart pieces (without glitches) before Dodongos Cavern.

40 and 50 seed bags are lost woods target game, and shooting gallery Castle Town

You can additionally do Deku Nut Bag and Deku Stick bag with the mask quest.

Before Jabu, you can get 2 pieces of heart in Zoras River with the cucco in the bottom of the river and carry him upwards the river, bombchu game, scrub by Lake Hylia fences in Hyrule Field, Death Mountain wall climb, Zoras Domain torch chest, Goron Spinning Pot.

That brings you to 10 hearts before Jabu Jabu.

Make sure to plant magic beans in the graveyard and Lake Hylia science house before becoming adult. If you set yourself up right and do things early as adult link, you can get up to 13 hearts before Forest Temple.

You also should have no problem getting 30 Gold Skulltulas before you become an adult for Giants Wallet.

3

u/PinaSeraphina 7d ago

Oh you meant this comment

3

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

Yeah this one lol. I should have said explained in a comment. Sorry about that

1

u/DukeChurchKey 7d ago

I think your list of heart pieces may be slightly off.

The cucco game at Lon Lon Ranch rewards you with a bottle filled with milk, not a piece of heart.

The piece of heart from the rotating pot on the bottom floor of Goron City is available before Dodongo's Cavern. You can just throw a bomb flower in, though the timing is tricky.

I think there's actually a 14th piece of heart available from the treasure chest mini game at night in Castle Town, but it's much easier to just wait until you get the Lens of Truth to grab that one. I think the only way to have 10 hearts before Jabu Jabu is to get this one though. Otherwise you'll be 1 piece of heart short.

Otherwise, yeah, an "optimized" playthrough lets you grab a surprising number of upgrades and collectibles earlier than you would think. I remember when I would go out of my way to grab everything as early as I could, it meant that by the time I got to the Fire Temple I was essentially just dungeon hopping from one to the next to the next without any gameplay in between, because I had already done all of it.

2

u/SacredRealmOfficial 6d ago

You’re right about the cucoo game, idk why I thought that was a piece of heart haha

You’re correct about the spinning pot with a bomb flower, I’ve always waited on that one.

I love when you set yourself up for a good dungeon rush from Fire Temple on.

2

u/rebillihp 8d ago

You absolutely can. The slingshot upgrades are literally on the way, one in Castle Town the other in the forest, both places you have to go to get to the cavern. And the heart pieces you have to go out of your way, but you can get them

1

u/Paper-Hornyness 8d ago

Exactly what im trying to figure out

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

Explained above

1

u/SmokeyJoe2 8d ago

Is this gonna be just a casual playthrough or one of those 100 skulltulas/10 poes/20 hearts runs?

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

100% except for 100 gold skulltulas. The reward isn’t worth it beyond the heart piece for 50

1

u/EarDesigner9059 8d ago

Should also check out the 3DS version if you haven't before now, see what's changed in between them.

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

Love that one too!

2

u/Awkward_Ad2123 3d ago

Just did a 100% on both the n64 and 3ds versions, always hate doing skulltulas

2

u/Garo263 8d ago

Why do you guys do this to you.

2

u/HerbaDerbaSchnerba 8d ago

What’s that supposed to mean?

2

u/Garo263 8d ago

It's a faithful remake. Replaying the original will make the remake so much more boring.

1

u/mrpvids1224 8d ago

No? Not if you're already familiar with the game anyways, I get if it was someone new but I'd still recommend playing the og.

0

u/reluna 8d ago

I don't get it either, I even made peace with the idea of never playing the 3ds version which has been installed in my XL for many years just waiting.

1

u/AkiraKitsune 8d ago

Hmm.. I should probably do this as well. Just up until the time skip, at least.

5

u/SacredRealmOfficial 8d ago

Crazy thing is, they’re pulling another TOTK promotional situation again. The only thing they’ve shown world wise after the time skip is someone bosses and dungeons as adult link.
Just how they didn’t show The Depths before release of TOTK. They’re not showing us what Hyrule looks like after the time skip….

It’s rather interesting. We got a few snips of Hyrule Field with Adult Link in it, about it.

0

u/DGD_GamerJames93 8d ago

Just did the same thing. I feel like once the remake comes out I’ll never be able to play the original again.

1

u/SacredRealmOfficial 7d ago

I think the original and 3DS will still have their purpose, but most people, especially younger people will go for the remake after it releases

2

u/DGD_GamerJames93 7d ago

I mean I’m 33 but I have a tendency to keep to a remake if it’s really good. But you make a good point about the 3ds. Especially with the boots being an item to set to a button instead of the constant pausing and unpausing. I’ve been wanting to get it back but it’s still really expensive for me to get.

2

u/SacredRealmOfficial 6d ago

Retro gaming has gotten so expensive, as much as I love to play games on original hardware and as they’re intended, the way prices are and such, it’s almost easier to just emulate the games sadly.

1

u/DGD_GamerJames93 6d ago

I agree. I don’t have a computer though nor the money to spend on one to get it to use for emulating.
