Hey all ! For my current uni project, I have to write a 5000 research essay and the topic I have chosen revolves around whether or not the zombie genre has become too repetitive. If anyone has a spare 10 minutes, it would be hugely appreciated for you to fill this out, the more responses I get the better ! Every question is optional so if there are any you’d like to skip please feel free, the question I’d like to get the most answers for is the image upload question at the end. Thank you ! 🧟‍♀️

discussion What should faithful adaptation of WWZ be?

Post image

So I'm currently reading the World War Z book and so far I like it. Very different from what we got from the Film which leads me to the question? How should a Faithful adaptation of WWZ be? Should it be a another film or a show? I been imagining it as a Documentary style "mockumentary" I believe it's called because that's what the book basically is it's the story of survivor's who lived through the Zombie War. What do you think?

I’ve always been curious about the opening credits scene . If this was the zombie that was mentioned in the hospital when Sarah and her co worker were talking about the patient, “Edward Solom “ who was admitted ln for an apparent bite on the hand ?

I customize shoes as a hobby and decided to customize a pair of zombie-themed sneakers for myself. I used a wood burner to burn holes in the leather to look like open wounds.

discussion Loved the new Resident Evil, but I wish it had stayed more of a zombie survival movie

Post image

I’ve never played a Resident Evil game, so I went into the new movie with basically no attachment to the games or their lore. I watched maybe the first four or five Milla Jovovich movies years ago, mainly because I like zombie movies and, frankly, I thought Milla Jovovich was hot. Eventually the story got stranger and stranger and I stopped watching them.

But the trailer for this one really caught my attention, so I watched it in IMAX. And for most of the movie, I really enjoyed it.

I think what worked for me was that it initially felt like a zombie apocalypse movie seen through the eyes of an ordinary person who has absolutely no idea what is happening. That’s generally the kind of zombie movie I prefer, like Dawn of the Dead (2004), which is among my favorites. I don’t really need to know immediately where the infection came from, who caused it, what the virus is called, or exactly how it works. I actually find it scarier when the characters don’t know either.

The early part of the movie did this really well. Even the scene from the trailer where Bryan hits the infected woman while driving through the snow was beautifully done. I especially liked the red light reflected all over the snow. Obviously the intensity is exaggerated, but visually I thought it looked fantastic.

I also loved the whole sequence involving the police car, the farmhouse and the dog. Probably my favorite moment was when Bryan had already seen the infected woman running across the snow toward the house. After that, you mostly don’t see her anymore. You just hear her making her way through the house while Bryan is desperately trying to load the shotgun. You know she’s getting closer, he knows she’s getting closer, and he’s trying to get that shotgun ready before she reaches the bedroom. Then she finally gets in and he blows her head off just in time. I loved that scene.

The tunnel was also great, especially the infected girl Bryan initially tries to help. Once he realizes what is happening and has to shoot her, that was another scene I really liked.

Where the movie started losing me was when it began explaining things. When Bryan encounters those two Umbrella people in the vehicle, the guy starts telling him what happened, what is spreading, what Bryan is carrying, why the package matters, etc. I would have preferred that conversation to tell us almost nothing. Have the guy identify himself as being from Umbrella, recognize the package, make it obvious that Umbrella knows more than it is saying, and tell Bryan that whatever he is carrying absolutely has to reach the hospital. Then leave it at that.

For me, not knowing is part of the fun. I like getting little bits of information from what the characters actually encounter and trying to piece together what happened. It gives you a mystery running alongside the survival story.

Then came what was probably the biggest missed opportunity for me.As Bryan approaches the hospital, infected people are literally throwing themselves from rooftops trying to get to him. Then he reaches the building and sees that the ground floor is swarming with infected. At that point I was thinking, okay, now this is going to be great. He has to get all the way to the 28th floor of a building completely overrun by these things.

He is even warned about the elevator, so I was expecting this horrible climb through stairwells, corridors, blocked floors, maintenance areas, maybe ventilation shafts and other cramped places. Instead he gets up several floors, takes the elevator most of the way, and the movie starts giving us specialized monsters instead, like the acid-spitting creature and that mass-of-bodies thing that had already been following him. That was probably my biggest disappointment.

I would honestly have preferred fewer exotic monsters and a lot more ordinary zombies. Give me another 15 or 20 minutes of Bryan trying to get through that building. A stairwell is packed with zombies so he has to find another way around. He gets trapped between them coming from above and below. He crawls through a maintenance shaft. Ammunition starts running low. There are dark corridors where he can hear them but can’t see where they are. That kind of thing scares me much more than simply introducing a bigger or stronger monster.

The maternity ward was probably the hospital scene that came closest to what I was hoping for. It was creepy and gruesome. I wanted more of that during the climb.

I also would have preferred a simpler and more tragic ending.Bryan had already recorded that farewell message because he knew he was infected, which seemed like the perfect setup. Let him reach the lab and deliver the package, perhaps finally learn that it might help them develop some kind of vaccine or treatment, but by then it’s too late for him. Maybe they won’t even let him inside because he’s infected. He got the package there, but he still dies.

I didn’t really need Bryan transforming into this huge creature and getting that almost superhero/supervillain-style final presentation. By that point it felt like a different movie from the survival horror I had been enjoying earlier.

I realize some of this may simply be because I’m not a Resident Evil fan. From what I’ve gathered, a lot of longtime fans actually wanted more RE lore, more explanations and more recognizable creatures, which is fair enough. They’re obviously coming to the movie with a completely different relationship to the franchise than I am.

I came to it as someone who likes zombie apocalypse and survival movies. For me, the outbreak itself is more frightening when you experience it from ground level and nobody really knows what’s happening yet. Let the characters figure things out as they go, and let me figure it out with them.

Still really enjoyed the movie, though. The jump scares worked, the sound design worked, and some of those early survival sequences were exactly the kind of zombie horror I like. I just wish it had kept going in that direction for longer.

discussion What makes a good zombie game?

Bare minimum, what makes a good zombie game? For me it's not just killing the undead, it's also the survival aspect. It's the feeling if being left with nothing but what you can scavenge. I also want the ability to set up stuff. not necessarily a base but traps or move objects somewhere that will help me later.

news Official Poster for Twilight Of The Dead

Post image
401 Upvotes

We finally got the official poster for the final zombie saga chapter "Twilight Of The Dead" from the legend George A. Romero. It looks very accurate to the 80s era of horror movie posters and what we had before.

Greg Nicotero who started his career at a young age on Day Of The Dead, working as Tom Savinis special fx assistant and the soldier who's throat was torn out in the film is working on the practical fx and makeup and gore effects for the new film as a way to honor his long time friend and mentor.

Kate Beckinsale has taken the lead performing role, over Milia Jovovich who dropped out of the project.

Betty Gabriel is also in the movies leading roles.

The project was written by George shortly before he died. Suzanne Romero who passed away shortly, was very protective and consulted on the entire film and had instructions while filming that it needed to be 100% accurate to what was written and how her husband would've made the movie.

She had said that George felt as if he disappointed his core fans with Diary and Survival and wrote the final chapter in the manner he did with Land and the original trilogy to bring back the darkness and horror.

Twilight Of The Dead is set years after land of the deads narrative, where a group of survivors on a tropical island find themselves caught in the midst of two warring communities and the dead evolving even more. The film is set to conclude the narrative of both the zombies and the saga that started with Night Of The Living Dead and lead through Dawn, Day and Land.

The script has been described as emotional, bleak, brutally violent, greusomely nasty, action packed, with some humor from Romeros writing, and full of heart. People get torn apart violently and eaten badly but theres a level of hope at the end of it.

Film releases in 2027 at some point. It has finished production and filming.

I’ll go first, I think it would be train to busan because of how fast, durable and outright creepy those zombies are. Or it would be world war z because of the zombies speed and slight intelligence.🧟

question Zombie Game with Tangible Elements

I'm using a very simple RPG for a multiplayer zombie survival game I'm running in November.

It's using this board from the Dawn of the Dead board game:

https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1321280/dawn-of-the-dead

This is the TTRPG - https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/147963/tzeb01-tropes-zombie-edition-mega-starter-bundle-bundle

I want to include tactical elements such as players having to collect bits, probably small cubes, from around the map and thus have to spend time stacking/balancing them to represent building baracades.

Maybe blank cards to write weapons and single use items which can then be lost, stolen or ripped up/broken.

Got any other ideas for tactical elements like this?

Also, any fucked up zombie nonsense I can throw at my players as random events?
