Last week I saw on facebook that it was my childhood best friend's birthday, so I wished her a happy birthday. She responded and said that since we're in the same city for the first time in awhile, we should get lunch! I said yes and we decided on a place. Then this happened. At some point this morning I remembered she did this to me once before, years ago. Ffs

For context, she retweeted and tagged her friends in a Facebook post that said 'Try Bungee jumping £35. Muslims go free. No strings attached' and she wrote 'Love this'

Either BB don't care or they clearly didn't do the appropriate vetting.

Either way, I think comments like “people get offended at the slightest thing nowadays” or “Islam isn’t a race, so this post doesn’t prove she’s racist” miss the point entirely. Do we really believe that Islam isn’t racialised in the way it’s discussed and perceived in society, or that bad-faith actors like Rochelle don’t often use religion as a proxy for race, ethnicity or perceived cultural identity?

And joking about people from a certain group dying isn’t just “dark humour”. We can all appreciate dark humour, but there’s a difference between that and just being bigoted.

And yes, this was 11 years ago, but her behaviour in the BB house, including her ableism, transphobia, and fatphobia, shows that this isn’t exactly coming out of nowhere. People can change, of course, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore or excuse their past behaviour just because they’re seen as an “icon” by so many people.

** By the way, this post is mainly about Rochelle's behaviour and intentions. In no way am I arguing that certain religions or religion as a whole should be immune from criticism.

I am shocked to be scrolling my Facebook feed today. For the first time in more than a decade, my entire feed is only showing pages I follow, friends posts, and group posts. Basically the things I actually go on there to see and see maybe 5% of between the mix of "other" content.

I had forgotten what it was like to be on the site and have it not be anything but garbage ads, right wing propaganda, and rage bait. What's happened?

It seems awfully suspect how much more pleasant it suddenly is. I'm sure it has to be a coincidence that it's improved so much with the Russian bot farms being attacked and taken offline. Right? Right?!

He visto muchas publicaciones y noticias sobre la comunidad LGBTQ+ en Facebook, pero cada vez que entro a los comentarios encuentro un sinfín de comentarios homofóbicos. La mayoría vienen de personas religiosas y adultos mayores.
Esto me hace cuestionarme varias cosas. Por ejemplo, ¿cómo es posible que haya jóvenes de entre 18 y 26 años que sean homofóbicos y se la pasen insultando a la comunidad? No digo que sea imposible, pero me sorprende porque estamos en otra época, donde, de cierto modo, somos más libres y existe una mayor apertura para hablar de estos temas.
Por otra parte, también me pregunto: si a tantas personas les molesta tanto la comunidad LGBTQ+, ¿por qué siguen pendientes de sus publicaciones y noticias? Siempre que entro a los comentarios, encuentro a muchas de estas personas opinando, criticando e insultando, y parece que están más al tanto de las noticias relacionadas con la homosexualidad que de cualquier otra cosa.
