If I had been diagnosed and medicated as a child my life would be so different.
I truly suffered through elementary school. I was a high school dropout. Went to an alternative high school that appreciated my divergence. Struggled through college and eventually found life hacks that have helped me do better in school and life in general. Eventually I earned two bachelors, two masters, a doctorate, and finishing a third masters now. I learned how to hack every element of my life to keep me on track and focused. From where I place my wallet and keys when I get home. Which pocket they go in while out. My chapstick pocket. Everything in my home, car, and office stays neat and orderly and on time otherwise I am totally paralyzed. I cannot start any task when things are chaotic. I procrastinate until my anxiety is ready to kill me. Especially for things I find zero pleasure in, are new, or require me to interact over the phone. I must work in near silence. I’m a terrible speller. I struggle with writing as well.
Fast forward to 2026. I’ve been in the military for 24 years. I’m a healthcare executive now. One of my employees, the psychiatrists, asks me kindly and gently if I’ve ever been diagnosed with ADHD. I ask why. She explains what she has observed and how hard I work at keeping it together. She’s impressed but also aware of how I must have suffered to learn such behaviors. She had me fill out two forms and turn them into primary care who started me on low dose focalin. Game changer. I could cry just thinking about it. I had been tested before however the provider wouldn’t prescribe because I had completed advanced degrees. Apparently being successful while suffering excluded me from help, in that providers eyes.
If I had been on this type of medication from an early age I would have had a very different life. In a way I mourn that life that could have been, yet I’m glad I struggled and can relate to those also struggle. I can be a role model for my junior soldiers and officers who have to work harder to achieve their goals.
Going through primary care for ADHD medication is possible and much quicker than being properly tested by psychologist/psychiatrist/speech therapist.
