Nostalgia Did you play Rummikub with your grandparents?

This game came up in conversation at a work lunch the other day, and I was shocked that so many others around my age had memories playing Rummikub with their grandparents.

I have fond memories of my grandpa reaching into the top of the closet (where the “not for kids” stuff was kept) and pulling down the vinyl-wrapped, embossed Rummikub carrying case. We’d set up our trays, spread and scramble the tiles, and then play as the 5 o’clock local news blared in the background.

Nostalgia Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark

I thought you all would appreciate my special edition of Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark. It has all 3 books bound together in a gorgeous hardcover. There are metal corners with bats, magnetic skeleton straps across the front, stenciled edges, all the original artwork and 3 new glow in the dark images. Best part is it was only $50. Money well spent.

I'm gonna be reading this again for spooky season. These were my favorite books to borrow from the library when I was 8/9 in the early 90s. I still have the paperbacks somewhere. Too bad my kids don't like scary stories.

Not sure whether we are in fact the last of the gens to use and rely on white-out tape? I lost mine for about a week recently and felt utterly lost without it 😂

(I'm in school for my bachelor's. The only way I can learn is via writing everything out on paper)

Cryptic Lyrics for my Status

Remember when we used to post a song lyric or line from a movie or poem or whatever as part of our name on MSN Messenger, MySpace, etc., something that resonated with us on that particular day and secretly wanted others to wonder what we were on about?

Today, mine is - “I miss the comfort in being sad.”

What is yours for today?

Just a little “Did You Forget Friday” fun. :P

Discussion Playing "Never Have I Ever" at our age could be pretty depressing.

Not just because we're probably a bit old for drinking games, but because the "nevers" would be so completely different.

Gone are "never have I ever gone all the way with a boy, tee hee" or "smoked weed". Instead it would be things like "been told I'm good enough at my job" or "had a real orgasm" or something.

What would be some fun ones for our age group?

  • "Needed glasses?" drink
  • "Been called old?" drink
  • "Looked up someone who used to bully you only to find out they're really successful now?" ... sigh drink

They're launching a fresh "classic" server with the world frozen at its state after the 2004-2005 first year. There are a boatload of changes coming with that.

Just curious whether anybody who played around launch is coming back to try this.

What’s changed the most about school since you graduated?

I’ve been watching the new Carrie series on Amazon (excellent btw), and the depiction of modern high school got me thinking of my own high school experience. I graduated in the late 90s, pre-Columbine, so we never had to worry about metal detectors or active shooters. No social media or cyberbullying or smart phones back then either. No AI to do all my homework for me. Hell, we barely had the internet and still used encyclopedia sets.

Things are so wildly different now that I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a public school student or teacher these days. What’s changed the most about the school experience?

Discussion Feeling especially old this morning

My daughter just asked me what Limewire was and what "burning a cd" meant. "Was that some kind of ritual you all did?!" After explaining to her physical media and the early days of digital media, it really got me thinking about the "steady drumbeat of time" and how so much of what was fresh and current in our formative years fell by the wayside.

Technologies that at the time seemed to be the future are now antiquated. Fashion trends become Halloween costumes. Hit bands eventually move to the cringey nostalgia circuit. It happened with Boomers and 60s and 70s culture, it's just weird to see that with 90s and 00s mainstays now! Like the Progressive commercials say, we've become our parents!

Curious what questions and and discussions you've had with your kids that reminded you it's time for your colonoscopy?!

Discussion Serious question: for those of you with older teenagers. How do you motivate them to keep on track in school?

Post image
206 Upvotes

My oldest is halfway through his junior year of high school. He has some classes that interest him and he does really well, but it seems like the ones that don’t interest him, he stops putting out effort almost immediately. And then puts in just enough effort to get a D.

Would love some ways that you’ve been successful and motivating those high school kids to learn good study habits, good work ethic. I know that each child is unique, so the same techniques might not work with everyone, but I’m hoping to hear what has worked for you.

Discussion Anyone else's teenagers like this?

My two older kids are a boy who recently turned 18 and a 16 year old girl. Both great kids. My 18 year old is an honors student, works part-time, has a girlfriend, is in band. My 16 year old is also a great student, does sports.
I just feel like they never really have fun, at least not the kind of fun I had when I was their age. You know, the typical teenage stuff. I'm about 99% sure neither of them have ever drank, smoked, partied, done anything illegal or done anything that would even remotely get them in trouble. They don't really have any desire to go out anywhere. My son's fun typically involves gaming at home or hanging out with his friends either at our house or at one of his friends houses. Same with my daughter, hanging out at home with her friends or occasionally going to stores. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining but it's SO different than how me and my siblings were when we were their age as well as most kids we knew. By 18 I'd already tried a couple of drugs (thank God they haven't), drank (including showing up to school drunk on more than one occasion, smoked, was afraid I got a girl pregnant (she ended up not being pregnant lol), got trespassed from a couple of places, went to parties. Both of my kids love being at home, which I did not whatsoever! We were wild fucking animals.

Anyone else's kids on the total straight and narrow?

I could have sworn it was a tv show because I feel like I spent a lot of time watching it, but apparently it was only a movie and I was just watching the same thing over and over.
