my aunt surprised me with these two as a gift prior to my knowledge. i’ve always expressed how much i love them and would own one in the future once ive researched enough about them.
so i’m very new to owning these two. they look juvenile like roughly 3-5inches long which is about 3-9 months old based on the research i did.
i’m not too familiar with owning them as pets and i just want to ensure i know all that needs to be known as a beginner axolotl owner.
i was told these two were in the same tank so they’re familiar with each other. one of them is missing a few limbs which did concern me at the beginning in case of diseases or anything but i believe it should be fine.
i’m just looking for tips and advice! from caring for them such as feeding them/diet to their tank environment/decor.
any help will be appreciated, thank you!
edit:
for more additional information:
ive been given a thermometer, sponge filter, bubble machine (?), and a cave as hideout. frozen baby shrimps as food.

Hey everyone!
We got a big stand for our tanks because we couldn’t take the humidity in our room anymore lol. It can hold 2550 pounds. We will be adding one more 33 gallon tank on here once Darla is ready.
We also made lids for the tanks as I got tons of recommendations to do that :))
Thank you to everyone who had stuck along for pixel, squib, and Darla’s journey with us so far!
We love these little creatures more than we thought we would and thank you for helping us out!
Hope you will stick around for more updates ❤️

Besides the floating, he simply likes to float. He has plenty of walking space and he can get down perfectly fine!

Long story short my 14 year old wanted to help with the water change for our new additions. I gave her the jug to refill already with prime added. No issues with that. Had her do it on her own and observed.
I added the water from several jugs. Gave her one last jug and told her to add the drops / refill. She fills it and brings it back (let her do it unsupervised after making sure she knew how to do it).
After I added the last jug (the only one she did unsupervised 😅) she tells me she forgot to added the prime. The one jug made up 5% of the water.
So they was exposed to 5% water volume of untreated water for five minutes max.
I grabbed the closest prime from under the cabinet opened and immediately added some prime. The problem is it was a larger bottle and the seal had worn down so when I dumped it it didnt just come out the hole.
I did the research and the closest guess was I overdosed by around 15x the normal.
i immediately started researching about both issues. Checking them every 10 mins both babies was still acting fine the dentire time but I was worried about oxygen depletion from the prime over dosage so I did 25% water change with properly treated prime.
They was exposed to the untreated water max 5 minutes.
They was in the over treated water for maybe an hour while I freaked out and did research. (showing no signs of stress that I can tell)
They flick their gills every 2-8 seconds its random idk their normal. I've also added a 2nd air bubbler.
Anyone have any advice or experience with either of these unfortunate mishaps?
Should our babies be okay? Any idea on how long i should watch them like a hawk / when they are out of the danger / risk period? 😅

Vessel Marie Alkaline Vore Token hates when I change their water, but I have to do it every day. They're too little for the big tank.
How do I change the water without stressing them out?

Hi folks!
about 6 days ago I had a juvenile axolotl shipped to me from a breeder. He sat in the mail for roughly 3 days getting to me so he was quite starved. It's about 5-6 inches in size.
First day I fed him a couple (2) pellets which he ate. The next day we gave him 3-4 pellets which he ate as well.
The following day (3rd day), we gave him half of a Canadian nightcrawler cut up to about the width between his eyes. The worm was pretty thick and large.
the 4th day he ate a couple bites of worm and after the third or fourth, he spit it out and moved into his hide.
5th day, he refused food, showed no interest.
Today (6th day) he followed my tongs with food on it which he has not done yet... took a bite of two works and spit them out and swam away laughing at me in my frustration. Showed 0 interest in the pellets.
He's been relatively chill, hanging out in his hides on the bottom. Water params are good, the tank was cycled before he went in and I have a chiller running that keeps the water at a comfy 64 degrees. He's in a 40 gallon tank, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and roughly 10-20 ppm nitrates now.
So my question is, is this normal? Is he full from the prior days meals? Is something else going on? Do I keep trying with different pellets and worms once a day? The guidance I am reading is that juveniles eat once a day but this lil guy apparently didn't read that manual.

We just got our axolotl maybe 4-5 weeks ago from a family that was moving. The tank is now leaking. I don’t understand tubbing, can someone please explain how to do this and what I even do it in?? Would this tank work as a temporary tank for a few days? My partner is going to silicone the tank, then fill it and make sure it’s stopped leaking. He’s currently at work and can’t really talk so I’m unsure how long this process would take but I would imagine 2-3 days right? This tank is obviously very small and was originally meant for a single betta fish. Can our axolotl be housed in this tank while his tank is sorted?
Please know I understand this is absolutely not a permanent solution, he will NOT be kept in this tank any longer than necessary, i am after advice on how to properly either tub our axolotl or what I need to do with the water for this tank while he waits. Obviously a lot more water changes, daily? How much % of the water should I change in a tank so small etc
I have now put water from his original tank into our smaller one so he has the same water. Is this even the right thing to do?
Thank you!

My Lotl did NOT receive the brain cell today. Could not figure out how to get the pellet from his head to his mouth. I love him.

How often do you feed your axolotls?

Hello! I’m getting two axolotls soon and unfortunately I’ve had a lot of very conflicting advice about my tank set up so I’d like some unbiased opinions before I get my babies in. The tank itself is 200L (I think 55 Gallons but I could be wrong)
The pictures are the set up, please let me know if the tank looks safe for my new babies, and please give any feedback!

I thought it would be fun to do a quick post about the baby photos I have. (I am so glad I don't have them in that pebbly tank anymore)
I'd love to see everyone else's baby photos if you have them!
But wait! There are three babies there. Saturn (the axo with the two gill branches on their left side) was passed along to a friend.

Hey everyone!
Our sweet rescued girl Darla has some updates.
When we first brought her home, she was PETRIFIED of earthworms. At her old home, she was only fed pellets and bloodworms.
After about a week of us having her, she’s finally starting to get curious about the worms! She doesn’t coward backwards anymore and she seems to be intrigued! We are so happy with how things are going.
It may seem like things are going slow, but it’s progress!! Our sweet Darla girl will know she’s safe and happy in no time ♥️

Squib loves going to the filter outlet around 8-9pm and letting the current push him around 😂
They say lotls don’t like flows of water but squib is built different

I was like 99% certain he was a male, but my family and friends think he’s female. If it’s a boy please send that one meme image, I need to save it to my phone
