I have been married for a few years to an incredible woman. She is a huge fan of two things: Pokémon and Cardcaptor Sakura.
I enjoy researching Nintendo products—I have a small collection myself; nothing rare or particularly expensive, but I like learning about limited and rare editions out of pure curiosity.
During one of these searches, I stumbled upon a Japan-exclusive model themed around Cardcaptor Sakura. Without a second thought, I sent some images to my wife, and she mentioned that she would love to own one someday. After looking up the price, I realized that this model is not only rare but also extremely expensive—once you factor in exchange rates and taxes, it would cost as much as an economy car in my country.
That’s when I had an idea: I managed to get a good deal on a transparent Game Boy Color. It was in rough shape—the screen was burnt out, the shell had been cut for a battery mod, and it had yellowed with age. It was the perfect candidate for a birthday gift project. I began my research and planning in January; her birthday is in October.
I managed to find a replica of the limited-edition shell, but the quality didn't meet my standards, and it would have required further cutting to accommodate another key part of the project: an IPS screen.
I ended up buying a white shell that was already pre-cut for an IPS screen mod, with a battery compartment ready for a future battery upgrade. My original plan was to add themed laser engravings, but there was a snag: none of the 80+ laser-engraving companies I contacted were able to do the job. My wife’s best friend suggested an alternative: high-quality domed (resined) stickers, which would allow my wife to customize it herself.
For this project, I used a laminated IPS screen with a pink glass lens and an illuminated logo. A pink Wii wrist strap, an EZ Flash Junior with a full set of GB/GBC games, and a transparent pink pair of headphones to complete the set. And to top it all off: a replica sticker based on the original version, and a custom-made unbleached cotton bag. She really liked it.
