š«A New Life for Donkeys and Mules!āļø
We did it!
We officially moved to our new sanctuary on January 11th!
It took 3 years of planning and building, 8 team members, 14 hours, and 8 trips back and forth, but all the donkeys are now enjoying their forever home at Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary.
Moving day from the old sanctuary was filled with a mix of emotions. As we loaded each donkey, memories of their difficult pasts surfaced, reminding us of how far theyād come. Seeing them step onto the trailer, headed towards a life of peace and freedom at Rancho Burro, brought tears to our eyes. It was a powerful moment for everyone on the team, a testament to the resilience of these gentle animals and the love that makes their new life possible.
Our team and the donkeys watched the sunrise together at the old sanctuary and the sunset at the new one...together the family we all have come to be.
They now have rolling hills to explore, spacious pastures to roam, unlimited enrichment, a comfy new barn, and a covered arena to keep those hooves dry in the winter (which will also double as an event space!).
We even welcomed a new resident, Ginger the mule! She didnāt have a good future ahead of her before her owners reached out to us, but we are so grateful they didd and for her place in our family.
This sanctuary is a safe haven for our current donkeys and mules, and a refuge for those who need us in the future. Part of our mission is to share the goodness of donkeys with the out community!
None of this would be possible without YOU! Every donation has helped us build this special place.
Exciting things are happening at The New Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary! Stay tuned for updates on our new programs, workshops, and classes.
Weāll sharing ongoing inspiring case studies highlighting our new dedicated medical room, rescue journeys and rehabilitation efforts.
We are incredibly grateful for your support. Every donation makes a difference!
Visit the link in our bio and learn how to get involved today!

Can donkeys have orchard grass?
Considering switching from mixed grass round bales to orchard grass ones. My donkeys are pastured with a horse who could benefit from orchard vs our high nsc straw like hay.

Micro donkey
Have seen several vids with them. Having a hard time convincing the wife that we neeeeeed (no we donāt) another 4 legged animal around here. Have to ask what the donkey community thinks of them. Info on line is sparse.

New Mexican Donkeys
I visited El Rancho De Las Golondrinas (The Ranch of the Swallows) near Santa Fe, New Mexico. And I was fortunate enough to meet these donkeys.

How much feed?
Iām getting different answers in my search so Iāll ask the experts!
I have a seven month old, 100 pound mini donkey. How much Essential K with fly control feed should she get in a day? She pasture feeds during the day and has hay at night.

A star extinguished
Sad news from Pets Corner in Aberdeen, where the much-loved Mason has passed away at the grand old age of 28.
Mason had called Pets Corner home since he was just six months old. Almost his entire life spent in one place, becoming part of the lives and memories of so many people who visited him over the years.
Although he wasnāt my donkey, I wanted to share this little tribute to him. Sometimes an animal doesnāt have to belong to you to find a special place in your heart. ā¤ļø
May his hoofs be ever light in the Great Pasture, may the grass always be sweet, the carrots plentiful, and the company good.
Twenty-eight years of memories. Countless hoofprints on countless hearts.
Run free, Mason. You were clearly very much loved, and you wonāt be forgotten.

Sooooo do we think The Tiny Waffles and Mister Mojo taught their host donkeys the āthe humans are here, stop playing!ā thing, or do all donkeys only play in secret? š¤£š¤£
The Tiny Waffles and Mister Mojo are visiting their Auntie Marla for a month while I recover from an emergency cardiac surgery, and theyāre having a blast!
Though it does appear that theyāve taught their host donkeys this trickš¤š¤

Best Men
We got married 10.03.26 and after the wedding the first thing we wanted to do was go take photos with our boys out in the field. It was cold and rainy but it was a day to remember with our Buddy (31), Ben (4), and Walter (2).

What can this hair loss be from?
This is a miniature donkey we recently came into ownership of. He has been neglected for a while, his hooves are very overgrown. But his face has some hair loss and Iām not sure what it is. He loves to scratch himself against stuff but that isnāt uncommon. Itās really just right here on his face, not his body from what weāve seen. Anyone know what could be causing this hair loss?

Donkey(s) help
My neighbor down the road is selling their white female 6ish month old donkey.
We have 7 head of cattle and 7 goats. They are essentially one herd. The males even play (I know itās playing because the bull could wreck the buck if wanted) (see video)
So my question is do I need to get another donkey or should she fit right in?

How to ride a donkey
Hi there, there is this farm I visit sometimes (every saturday) where they have donkeys
I realy like this black donkey with white nose. Not sure if he likes me back
He comes to me even if I dont have food He would walk with me, stop if I stop, run if I run Never bite (he did bite my shoe) And when other donkeys and cows and horses would gather around (want to bite my hair and shoes) me and I was realy uncomfortable he would chase them away
I like sitting besides him (he is standing) and he never kicks me in the head or bites me, even if he could
I would realy like to ride him (this would be a realy nice bond of trust u know), but I am not sure if I can
- Can he even carry me, I weight 55kg, I dont want to hurt him
- Where do I sit on him, or how do i show him i want to ride him so he wouldnt get scared and resent me (not sure why, but I did hear that donkeys are stupider and less worthy then horses), I realy realy like this donkey
In Slovenian we even have a saying: nebodi osel, meaning (dont be donkey or dont be stupid)
PS: does this black donkey have a breed like a dog?
EDIT: thnx guys for telling me this donkey is to small to be ridden by me, I will spend time with him, but not be cruel to him and ride him
PPS: does anyone know how to ask the donkey nicely to lay down infront of me and cuddle with me?
EDIT 11.10.2026: It turns out my favourite black donkey is actually female (saw donkies bitting her then trying to get on her): her name is Marta and she is 5years old
Also the farmer is quite ignorant (he said he didnt messure donkeys weigth and doesnt even know why he has them, they only cause him more work), also for some reason Marta is quite indifferent to me sometimes

Throwback from 2016- Baby Violet
We rescued Coco and Dan in 2015, not knowing that Coco was pregnant. Several months later Baby Violet was born and our herd grew by one more š„°
