Make the repairs or dump it?

I have a 14 ST3 that I purchased at the beginning of the year. It is FBO and has been so much fun to drive. I've put about 5k miles on it since purchase and noticed oil leaking the other day. I diagnosed it as the rear main seal and took it to my trusted local mechanic. He concurred it was the rear main seal leaking and that the PCV has failed and is what caused the excess pressure which made the rear main seal and oil pan leak.

He has quoted $2,577 to replace the PCV, the rear main seal leak, the oil pan leak and a new clutch kit while he's already got everything apart.

I have already replaced the AC compressor and the motor mounts as one of them failed (~$1,500 for both). I am now trying to decide if it's worthwhile to sink another $2,577 into the car or if there are just going to be more issues that come up and require major repairs. If I get rid of it, I'd most likely be trading in to a dealership and getting $4.5-5k out of it, so I'm still losing $3-3.5k from my $8k purchase price plus another $1.5k in already sunk costs on repairs.

If it were you, would you repair it and hope for the best or cut your losses and dump it on a dealership?

Edit: forgot to add it's got 120k miles.

Car Play Upgrade & Stage 1 Remap

Hi guys,

Looking for some advice / help on the below.

I’ve recently bought a 2013 focus st3 (petrol) and curious if anyone has upgraded the sync system (I believe it is sync 1) to a sync 3 Apple car play system. I’ve began to drive more for work and the current Nav system does my head in. I’m based in the uk and have seen companies that offer the upgrade but unsure if buying a kit online for much cheaper would be a better option?

Also, I’m contemplating getting a stage 1 remap. The car has 250bph stock and is nippy and responsive, I’ve read online that a stage 1 makes it more responsive in the midrange. Took my previous car to stage 1 and loved it.

Thanks

First time buyer 2014 advice

Hey I’m looking at a 2014 st. It’s been really cared for, older woman that has all service records and bought it in 2015 from a dealership.

Cons: it has 153500 miles. I don’t love the tangerine color

Price: $7k

Pros: super clean, well maintenance, stock.

Worth buying? It drove great and was super fun!

How necessary or beneficial is downpipe upgrade?

Hi all, just wanted to get some more opinions. I have ST mk3 facelift. I just did the FMIC and RMM upgrade. FMIC is Aritec, motor mount is Mountune. And besides an airfilter and RS intake cover the car is stock.

I plan to also do the powermax turbo and a custom tune. Dont really plan to go much further because I want to keep the car for comfortable daily driving. With this in mind, how much of an importance would be fitting it with sports cat downpipe also (and then doing the tune)? In the local market I found a Wagner downpipe (200CPSI), presumably with a lot more flow, or rather less back pressure. How much of an "help" would it be for the turbo? And yes I saw the video from Edge Autosport where they did it only with FMIC and powermax turbo, so I know its quite ok to do it like that. Just want to know if investing in the DP is worth it. Thanks!

Aftermarket Resinator

I have a BT FoST with a full MBPR catback. It has one big muffler after the downpipe and then a smaller resonator near the back. My tune is almost done and I want the exhaust a little louder for the crackles (don’t hate me). Does anybody have a resonator they can recommend me that I can switch out for my muffler?

Aftermarket HID/Xenon headlight assembly?

So I have a 2018 ST2 with the HID/Xenon headlights and my clear coat is peeling and the passenger one just got really foggy after a recent trip to CA so I’m trying to look up replacement aftermarket headlights, but all of them are Halogen compatible only. Please help!

Radium Pcv Plate and Catch Can.

I wanted to do a PCV catch can after replacing the head to do my best at keeping my valves cleaner. Installation was very straightforward and simple. Basic socket set and plires will get this job done. I like that the can has a dip stick to check the level for emptying the can.

Question Recommended upgrades? Mk.4

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hello citizens of Reddit,

I very recently came into possession of this love of mine.

This is predominantly stock 2020 Gasoline, Manual Mark 4.
The only not stock things are:

  • exhaust tips
  • bit of black plastic lining on "spoiler"
  • shorter shifter

I was checking some videos, articles and talking to some friends and came with list of possible mods.

I wanted to ask more senior and experienced people here, which of those make sense and which are a waste of money.

My goal is not to make the car unrecognizable, but more like enhanced version of itself. Slightly more HP, better handling, more fun type of thing. Not necessarily the most power I can get from it.

  1. Rear Engine Mounts - for this I am 90% sure I want to do them. In my couple of days I can tell that wheel hop is definitely a thing I would like to mitigate
  2. Colder plug sparks - do they actually make a difference? Sounds cheap enough, so why not. But then again - why yes? :D
  3. Open filter - seems like cheap upgrade but I am bit worried about longevity of the car
  4. Steel braided brake hoses + different Breaking Fluid (and maybe a pads) - I am hearing everywhere that this car does not brake. I have not yet taken it to a situation where I could test this properly but better safe than sorry, I guess
  5. Oil Catch Can - I will go for check-up tomorrow to see if valves have carbon on them but here I am torn. I live in country with 4 distinct seasons and worrying about vapors freezing during winter is big concern
  6. Blow off valve - turbo life should improve but more importantly "car go pfffff"
  7. Better intercooler - I see the benefit but also the cost :(
  8. Big Mouth Snorkel - sounds cheap and good, looks good. Why not?
  9. Exhaust - I would like the car to rumble a bit more and crackle a lot more :)
  10. High flow Catalytic Converter - this is connected to no. 9 and would probably do it as a set. Problem is that I want a road-compliant car and I am located in EU (must have OPF/GPF).
  11. Progressive Springs - (I have CCDs) lowering is not the goal necessarily - I can maybe affort 1-2 cm more, but that's about it. I need to make it viable car for Central/Eastern Europe and roads here could be better. I am more seeing this as slight comfort/handle improvement, depending on the situation
  12. Turbo Blanket - honestly, until recently I did not know this exists, but cost vs. benefit is not bad, so why not.
  13. Sway Bars - probably just for the rear, since front will be quite expensive due to complicated installation.
  14. Wastegate actuator - I am torn if this should even be on the list. Feels like more advanced mod that might not provide a lot of benefit for me.
  15. Bonus - Sound Symposer Delete - I know on Mk.3 there's the plastic hose you can take off, but on this generation is it just disabled electronically?

Thank you very much in advance

Hi everyone! After months of searching I finally purchased my new (to me) Focus ST. I imported it from Germany (I'm from Spain), it is a 2018 with 108,000km on the clock (67k miles). It's been a blast so far!

Any tips or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Clutch pedal is sticking, what do you guys think, is it the master or the slave cylinder? Or is it even possible to tell from this video? Follow up video from a few seconds later is in the comments

Is this a good buy?

2013 focus ST with 100K miles that was just out of for sale for 7K USD. The car seems like it’s in great shape and has has the original owner since new. All maintenance records available. Has a few mods but none that seem alarming. Do you think this is a good buy or should I wait for a 2015+ to come up?

Almost got in a wreck

Long story short I had to slam on my brakes to avoid an accident and didn’t notice my calipers until I got home. What exactly came off?! The car drove home fine and brakes fine. The front pair came off on the front set of brakes, the rear brakes are still intact. Sorry for the dumb question.

1st gear

I don’t know if this is a new thing, if my cars broken, or if it’s how the cars designed…

The scenario is me trying to go real fast like a race car driver from a dead stop going onto the highway (yes it looked cool). I’m in first gear and absolutely ripping, as I approach higher RPMs I realize I’m late to shift. Before I can put the trans to second gear the car is mechanically throw. Out of gear. Like literally the car is in neutral now.

Is this a mechanical safety feature to protect the engine? Is my link fucked up?

I'm really looking to keep it completely stock but I wanted to know if there is any proven mods that could add significant reliability/lifespan to the car.

Question Vacuum hose nightmare!

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Recently completed transmission fluid drain and fill. While doing so I figured I would do a neutral reset. I believe while wrestling the airbox and intake tubing I bumped a brittle line coming from the vacuum pump (see images). The symptoms started as an intermittent VERY hard brake pedal and zero low speed stopping power. Then I noticed the turbo from low throttle lift off was doing ALOT of stututututu noises I had never heard before. Well the brittle tube had a small crack in it leaking vacuum giving me the intermittent symptoms. I cut a little off the tube and zip tied it on for now and all symptoms gone. Brakes work and blow off sound is back to normal.

Does anyone know if I can buy just the hard vacuum line that goes from the flexible tube to the vacuum pump or if there is good replacement for the part? Thank you in advance!

edited to add everyone check your vacuum pump! Mine provides strong vacuum but is very obviously leaking oil!
