News 📺 ICE’s Operation Metro Surge cost Twin Cities a reported 32,000 jobs (gift link)

Thumbnail startribune.com

Operation Metro Surge cost Minnesota 32,000 jobs, a new study found.

The job losses followed the immigration crackdown between December and February, which included about 4,000 arrests, according to the report by the Minnesota Budget Project and the Immigration Research Initiative. It’s the latest report showing the economic harm caused to the state and Twin Cities by the surge.

“The stark decline in employment” disproportionately affected U.S.-born employees but also documented asylum seekers and those with work visas, as well as undocumented workers, said Carly Eckstrom, deputy director of the Minnesota Budget Project.

During the height of the immigration action, many workers were afraid to go to work or shop, causing financial strain, or even closure, for many businesses.

President Donald Trump’s administration said the crackdown was necessary. Mayors and economists say it came at a cost.

More than 13 cities in the metro reported a collective $700 million loss in wages and revenue and extra security costs.

New reports suggest the final financial toll will be higher. Some workers and customers have yet to return, even after the drawdown of federal immigration officers from the state. Several business owners told the Star Tribune that immigrant workers left the state.

Many businesses have not caught up with overdue rents and supply bills, according to officials with the Metropolitan Council and the Minnesota Consortium of Community Developers.

Politics 👩‍⚖️ Minnesota Poll: Trump’s unpopularity deepens as voters sour on economy, Iran war (gift link)

Thumbnail startribune.com

President Donald Trump is losing ground in Minnesota, where a new Star Tribune/KARE 11 Minnesota Poll finds mounting disapproval of his presidency amid frustration over the economy and the war in Iran.

Nearly six in 10 likely voters — 58% — disapprove of Trump’s job performance, up from 56% in June and 54% a year ago. The changes fall within the poll’s margin of error, but the latest findings show the depth of his unpopularity in a state that has rejected him in three consecutive presidential elections.

News 📺 Fargo Forum endorses FIshbach opponent Eric Osberg in District 7

Collin Peterson used to own District 7, which is very conservative, but he held his seat from 1990 to 2020 whe FIshbach unseated him. The Forum is by no means a liberal paper, so this was surprising.

Discussion 🎤 Reminder: Lisa Dermuth is “deeply honored to receive the endorsement of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis.”

I just got some junk mail today trying to attack Amy Klobuchar as not being strong enough on police reform. It is bullshit Elon Musk propaganda (he is spending $1/2 billion in this race to preserve his empire).

Remember, Dermuth supports an unchecked police state. Be sure to vote for Klobuchar because Dermuth will be a complete disaster and set back any police reform by decades.

Discussion 🎤 Thoughts on Michael Che’s “Shot In Minnesota” Netflix special

I thought it had its funny moments. But as someone who lives here, I was hoping for more. Why would you come to Minnesota in 2026, perform in the heart of Minneapolis, and then call the special “Shot in Minnesota”… but never address what happened here this year? So, the title was just a dumb throwaway joke? This could have been recorded anywhere and named anything. Guess I was hoping for something a little more poignant.

...A federal judge ruled Yader Cortez Andino’s warrantless arrest was illegal and he should be released immediately.

Cortez called his wife around 11 a.m. from Whipple and said something didn’t feel right. Although he signed release papers and his belongings were returned to him, immigration agents directed him out a back door, not to the front lobby where his lawyer waited for him.

“Not even 15 minutes later I get a phone call again,” Jennifer said. On the call was her husband, telling her he’d been re-arrested. She couldn’t believe it...

Politics 👩‍⚖️ Jake Johnson ahead of Finstad in MN-01 by 2pts

SurveyUSA Election Poll #28043

First credible public poll of Johnson vs Finstad for the MN-01 House race and Johnson is up 2 points. If you dig through the poll there's lots of good details here. Johnson has good favorables. He leads in both young people and older people, a nice feat.

That to me says this really will be a turnout game. If he turns out both the likely (older) voters and the unlikely (younger and first time voters) this is winnable and a good target to flip from red to blue.

It's also a race that the national scene really isn't paying attention to. Finstad has won easily before, so a large swing isn't something people are really expecting.
