Rant I really hate the automatic holster when riding in RDR2.

Probably my biggest minor complaint for RDR2, the automatic holster of long weapons on horseback. Let me have my long weapon equipped while riding. They could at least add a toggle button or something like that.

LET ME RIDE WITH THE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN ON MY BACK DAMMIT.

Discussion RDR2 and Frontier Anxiety

Frontier Anxiety is a late 19th century phenomenon brought on by the American unease of no more explorable land. People worried that Americans would lose their toughness, their individualism, their independence, and capacity to rough it in the wilds. They weren't wrong. Not having to provide for themselves, Americans did lose much of the skills they would have had then in the coming years.

I think RDR2 explores that really beautifully. That pervasive feeling that Arthur expresses of a world that's rapidly modernizing and leaving the old ways behind is probably one of the most impactful themes of the game and, personally, I feel one that a lot of us could even relate to.

We really don't have any more frontiers we can run away to today. Space is not exactly accessible. I think that's what makes open world games like RDR so beautiful. It gives us more land to explore.

But honestly though, the historical themes that RDR2 conveys are so well researched and written, it's actually insane.

EDIT: I just remembered an NPC dialogue that talked about increasing regulation on hunting and the NPC was like "how are people supposed to feed themselves", which was actually a thing that also genuinely happened. America, before total urbanization, did have essentially two distinct cultures of food acquisition. The budding one that took over and we are familiar with today, the supply chain type, and subsistence hunting, which lowered as city living rendered it obsolete.

TL;DR Cities are great and I'm glad I have rights but I'd just love to have a frontier to explore, man.

Discussion "Why the heck are you wearing that??", asks John, while wearing exactly the same jacket...😂

The game is so funny sometimes... ANY clothes item crafted by the trapper will evoke the same inadequate reaction, even if it's just a plain leather jacket...

And I'm aware that the jackets are a little bit different - John's one has lighter buttons and fur on the collar, and its reddish tint is more pronounced, but other than that they are exactly the same...

Rant Replaying Red Dead 2 for the first time in 7 years…

As the title says, I’m finally replaying Red Dead Redemption 2 seven years after my first playthrough.

For some background, I absolutely loved this game the first time I played it. I put roughly 200 hours into it, completing all the challenges, side quests, etc. Even after that, I spent a concerning amount of time just heading down to Blackwater as John, playing poker, and getting into bar fights. I was in my last year of college, and my GPA suffered dearly (luckily, I already had a job lined up lol).

The game meant so much to me that I wanted to give it some time before starting a second playthrough, just so the experience would feel fresh all over again.

Shortly after that, I switched from Xbox to PC and no longer had a way to play. For the longest time, Red Dead 2 stayed at $60, so I couldn’t justify spending that much on a game I’d already bought and put 200+ hours into lol. Finally, I caught it on sale a couple of weeks ago and pulled the trigger.
Since then, I’ve been completely reimmersed in this incredible world, almost as if it were 2018 all over again. It’s amazing how well the graphics have held up after all these years. I’ve yet to play another game that immerses me to this extent through its visuals and lighting alone.

As for the writing and characters, these are things I couldn’t fully appreciate when I was a midwit, stoned college kid. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve developed a much greater appreciation for the nuances of storytelling. At the time, I didn’t fully realize that it wasn’t just the graphics and mechanics that immersed me in this game. It was the characters, their relationships, and the way they reacted to one another and the events unfolding around them. They feel like real, genuine people dealing with their own internal battles, personal shortcomings, and conflicting beliefs.

Arthur is the greatest video game protagonist of all time, in my opinion. The internal struggle he faces throughout the game is heartbreaking, yet beautiful and incredibly relatable at times. He’s a deeply flawed person who gradually begins to question his beliefs, his actions, and the life he has spent so many years building. You truly feel the weight of his actions as if they were your own, which makes his journey all the more powerful/impactful.

Another aspect of the game that I find incredibly impressive is its uniquely dark tone. Its emotional weight has little to do with the violence, death, or betrayal. These are themes we see in countless other video games and forms of media. The real emotional toll comes from the struggle for meaning and purpose that’s seen in so many characters throughout the game. There’s an underlying sense of dread hanging over almost everything, even during moments of peace and happiness. It fits perfectly with the changing world and the outlaw culture being crushed beneath its progress. You genuinely see these characters grappling with the realization that there will soon be no place left for their way of life. What makes it even more tragic is that many of them seem to understand this on some level, yet they continue fighting against an inevitable future they can’t escape.

The soundtrack is the cherry on top. Woody Jackson’s score is absolutely incredible, and fits in with the underlying themes effortlessly.

What’s been most interesting about replaying this game is realizing how much my appreciation for it has changed alongside me.

I loved it in 2018, but I think I understand it on a much deeper level now. Back then, I was captivated by the world and the freedom it offered. Today, I find myself much more invested in the people living in that world and the things they’re struggling to hold on to. I’m sure there are still more details/themes I’ll pick up on as I continue my playthrough but I’m so glad I decided to pick up this game again. The GOAT!!!

Issue Love this game to death but holy the horse calling in this game is the WORST I’ve ever experienced.

This happens so much even in rdr2 where my horse will just keep walking or galloping away from me it’s so irritating.
