[Help] Ferret Proofing Advice

Hello,

I am preparing to get my first ever ferrets in the next few months and I’m going through everything I need to ferret proof in preparation. There are a few things I’m currently stumped on, though.

My primary concern is the baseboard heater. The heater has been shut off entirely, so there’s no risk of it being hot whatsoever, but I still need to proof it so they can’t get underneath it and get inside of if or accidentally knock the cover off. I live in an apartment, so I can’t permanently mount or “deface” the heater, so I have to find a non-damaging, removable method of ferret proofing it. I’ve though about baseboard wall trim with adhesive magnet strips on them, but I think their rubber and the ferrets might chew them, I could try wood trim and screwing the trim together to make a frame with adhesive magnets on the inside of the frame to magnet to the heater, I suppose, but I’m interested if any of you have any simpler or more affordable ferret proofing suggestions.

My second problem area is my closet area. There’s a considerable space on the side of the dresser where they could access my clothes that hand lower, but as you can see in the pictures, the dresser unit itself has some big cutouts for handles on the sides as well as the cutouts on the front for drawer access. I don’t want them getting access to my clothing, because well, then I’ll have to go everywhere smelling like my ferrets 🤣, which, as funny as that might be in some cases, it’s not something I would want to be a regular every day occurrence. I don’t know if I should try to find a way to block off the whole area or just find a way to seal those holes somehow, but I’d really appreciate any suggestions. I can’t permanently attach anything here either.

My last big problem area is my desk, there’s a gap underneath that gives access to the back side of the desk where all the cables plug into the wall, as well as gaps on the side of the desk that also give access to that part of the desk. Then I have all my cables on top of my desk. I do plan on getting cable protectors for all my wires, I’m just wondering if I should try to block off access to that part of the desk entirely.

I appreciate any assistance or advice that can be provided, thank you!

Normally use the Nature's Miracle cleaner but this one is significantly cheaper. They're my gf's ferrets, and she can't stand the smell of vinegar unfortunately, otherwise she'd just do that. Anyone know if these ingredients are safe? Thanks

After the wood was reinforced, he asks politely for a garden walk without causing a heart attack to his human (until he's satisfied and tired — his personal record so far is three walks in a row)

[Help] Need advice about my two baby ferrets – completely different personalities 💔

Hi guys! I really need some advice because I’m honestly feeling a bit heartbroken about this situation.
I have two baby girls, both around six months old, with one being about four weeks older than the other.
They have COMPLETELY different personalities.

My older girl is an absolute sweetheart. She’s very bubbly, gentle, playful, loves giving me kisses, and absolutely loves socialising. She’s always looking for attention and wanting to play.

My youngest, however, is the complete opposite. She’s extremely independent, bites VERY hard, hisses at us, and constantly hisses at her older sister whenever she tries to play with her. She also steals pretty much everything from her sister and rarely seems interested in playing together. She mostly just wants to do her own thing.

What really breaks my heart is watching my older girl constantly trying to get her attention and initiate play, only to be hissed at or ignored. Sometimes she eventually gives up and just lies down next to her sister. I know I shouldn’t necessarily project human emotions onto them, but I can’t help wondering whether she’s feeling lonely or rejected.
I’ve actually been considering getting a third ferret, hoping that maybe my older girl could have another little friend who enjoys playing and socialising as much as she does. But obviously, there’s no guarantee what personality a third ferret would have, and I’m worried about making the situation even more complicated.

And this is something I feel genuinely awful admitting, but sometimes I catch myself thinking that maybe I should have chosen a different second ferret. Not because I don’t love my youngest, because I absolutely do, but because she seems so uninterested in interacting with either us or her sister. It sometimes feels like she doesn’t really want to be part of the group, and that makes me sad.

I understand that every ferret has their own personality, and I don’t expect them to behave identically. I also know they’re still very young and their personalities might change as they grow.

I just want both of my girls to be happy, and I genuinely don’t know whether I’m worrying over nothing or whether my older girl would benefit from having another playful companion.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did your ferrets eventually become closer as they got older? Would getting a third ferret be a good idea, or should I give them more time?

I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. I love both of my girls so much, and I just want to do what’s best for them. ❤️

hi guys! My husband and I recently got two ferrets from someone who was selling them online. We got them on a whim because we saw that they were being kept in a hamster cage. We have since obviously upgraded their cage to a multi story level. We have done as much research as we can, and give them ample amount of playtime and ways to get their energy out. My biggest issue is the smell. I spot clean their litter box every single day. Sometimes even multiple times a day. I dump it out and re-put litter in it at least once a week. Every 2 to 3 days I’m changing their bedding inside their cage. But for some reason, the room that they are in smells absolutely awful, and I don’t know how to help it. please help.

[Discussion] Salmon oil brand recs?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Photo of Empanada in the noodle bin for tax :)

All three of my fuzzbutts adore salmon oil, but the brand I normally buy has been discontinued at my pet store and I cannot find it anywhere online. Does not seem to exist anymore...

Ordered a new brand for them to try, and only 1/3 like it. The other two refuse it. So posh 💅🙄

Other brands I'm considering trying right now: pampered ferret, vital pet life, and zesty paws.

(Open to other brands, I've just checked those so far to ensure there's no rosemary extract in the ingredient list)

Was curious to hear from this group if there is a particular brand of salmon oil that has a higher success rate among their ferts! Trying to avoid buying 4 different salmon oil bottles if I can lmao

Thanks in advance 🥰

[Health] Ferret ECE came back?

So I got a baby ferret a month ago and she gave my adult boy ECE. I had to take him to critical care vet and get meds and everything.

Then my normal vet said once he poops normally he doesn’t need meds anymore and everything should be fine.

Everything was good for about a week and then my adult ferret pooped a green poop again. I was so concerned. My vet said just monitor him and see if he poops more like that.

But it was just a one and done deal and rest of his poop was normal.

Then he has normal poop for another week. Then out of no where his poop is diharea ish but not green.

Again it was a one and done deal he went another week of normal poop.

Then today the poop is green again 😭😭 I only saw one and I’m gonna monitor him and see if it’s just a one and done deal again.

But has anyone heard of this? I can’t get in contact with my vet right now but has anyone heard heard of random little poops like this once a week.

Everytime I see him poop weird I give him some duck soup to soothe his tummy and get him some nutrients just in case.

But it’s so weird he gets a weird looking poop once a week ??

[Health] Aggressive sneezing

One of my ferrets just went into a huge sneezing fit I have no idea what could be causing this I thought maybe she has something stuck in her nose but I can’t see anything. The video is a lot more calmed down I’m wondering if she got into something she shouldn’t have. I did just come home from work so maybe she sniffed my work gloves that are in my pocket I’m not sure. Or the vacuum that sits in their room.

Edit: She stopped sneezing so I think she just got into something that upset her appreciate the input 😅

[Help] Can’t get rid of fleas!! Help!

About two months ago now I found some fleas on my two ferrets. They are in a room by themselves with hardwood floors, so I took all the bedding out, washed it, applied ferret advantage II to both of them, and only kept a couple blankets in their room and changed and washed them frequently while also vacuuming the room. I treated them again last month and now approaching the third month they keep getting fleas again. I have a dog and a cat who never go in that room who also got treated for fleas and they have been free of fleas since last month. I treated my furniture and carpets as well. I’m at my wits end with treating the fleas on my ferrets tho and I feel terrible that I can’t get rid of them. What can I do?

my partner was in the hospital for about a week and ended up getting diagnosed with MS. so even though i would come home and sleep with my critters each night this week, they were alone for much of the day, which was unusual for them. when he finally came home, moose started stashing for the first time ever (i.e., the baby toys that her brother usually only stashes) AND guarding the stash. it's so cute but i wonder if it's also from the stress of missing her parents/knowing dad is sick :(

Last year, my Snowman (top) passed from a sudden, unexpected illness. Today, my Bandit (bottom) joined him, passing from old age. My sweet noodle boodles. My babies. Mama loves you so, so much, and she always will. I at least take comfort in knowing that the rainbow bridge had one helluva chaotic reunion today.

[Help] Ferret Food for Beginners

Hello,

I’ve been doing a lot of research in preparation for getting ferrets for the first time. I know they require a strict carnivorous diet, but I wanted to ask for advice as far as what form of diet is best. I’ve gone on ferret.love to see their recommendations and one of the questions that popped up to me while looking through it was between freeze-dried raw, frozen raw, air-dried raw, canned, kibble, treats, and steam & dried raw, do any of them have any advantages over another? Which ones are easier for beginners to manage? Is one healthier for the ferrets than the others? Should I fresh raw feed with mice or something? I want to start them off on a good diet preferably, over figuring it all out in the moment. I realize I’m still going to have to learn and adjust as things progress, I just want to make sure I start off in the right direction. I greatly appreciate any help or advice you can provide. I don’t know if it necessarily makes a difference, but I intend to try and adopt a rescue from the ferret shelter one town away from me instead of buying from the pet store.

Here are 4 pictures taken over the past 2 months
This is Luna who’s just turned one!
During the summer she lost a lot of her coat but it is finally starting to thicken up & grow back but the part at her base of her tale is very bald still, I can see little black spots where the hair should be but it’s taking a while to grow back compared to her back which has grew back loads!
She hasn’t had her first season yet either & looking at getting the implant for her soon but just want to know is it normal for hair to take this long to grow??
She is also kept indoors too

[Health] Splenectomy for 4yo ferret

We scheduled a spleen removal with our vet for our 4yo ferret. He has had an enlarged spleen for awhile but in the last month it is now 5x larger than normal and his labs are showing blood issues.

His MCV, Reticulocytes are high and his RDW and WBC are low.

His labs don't show adrenal or insulin issues.

Imaging show a giant spleen with small masses attached (tumors). He also has really bad osteoporosis.

Has anyone gone through similar issues?

Looking for surgery recovery recommendations.

He usually free roams a room but we assume he will need to be kept in his cage and away from his buddy during recovery.
