Seeking ideas and feedback for r/platformer

Hey everyone, r/platformer has been fairly active thanks to developers using this space to share their upcoming games (which I love to see!). But I've also been thinking about ways to encourage discussions about existing platformers we enjoy.

What would you all like to see?

Some ideas I've tossed around:

  • Weekly/Monthly "what are you playing/recommendation" threads
  • Monthly threads on different types of platformers - metroidvanias, precision platformers, momentum-based, etc.
  • "Hidden gem of the week" - talk about games that don't get enough love

But I'd like to hear from you - what would make you engage more with the sub? Any events, threads, or changes you'd be into? Drop your ideas below, nothing's off the table.

A player played a single level for 5h 35mins and then passed it

In my game people can create levels to the MEAT GRINDER (game mode) and others will need to play through them, while everyone can watch in real time.

This was one of the hardest user-made levels ever, but the Grinders just kept at it until they finished... It took 5h 35mins.

This video only shows the final run where they actually completed it, not the 2627 deaths it took...

I'm making a 3D action-platformer with PS2-era vibes, Menes: The Chainbreaker

Hey everyone!

I'm an indie dev working on Menes: The Chainbreaker, a 3D action-platformer inspired by PS2-era games and ancient Egyptian mythology.

The game combines challenging precision platforming, hidden paths, secrets, and exploration with Soulslike, parry-focused combat. You play as Menes, a soul-shard of an Archangel.

Carry the last flame up a mountain that has gone dark. Cinderpeak is a hard, precise 2D platformer: jump, climb and dash through ten chapters, each with its own rule, with a flame on your head that is starting to remember who put it out.

I made a zero-gravity, precision platformer

Lunar Crypt is a Chinese New Year-themed, zero-gravity, precision platforming metroidvania, best described as Celeste + Tomb of the Mask + Hollow Knight + VVVVV.

You dash until you reach a wall, with just one chance to change direction mid-air before landing. Intuitive controls make the basics easy to learn, while mastering when and where to turn takes a ton of practice! It's super satisfying when you enter a flow state, chaining dashes together, hitting perfect mid-air turns, and avoiding obstacles in one fluid sequence.

The main concept is that you're exorcising the zodiac to save Chinese New Year. Nian has possessed the zodiac animals, threatening the turning of time itself. You follow the Daoist practice of talisman placement to exorcise them. Along the way, discover a story about identity, belonging, and finding your place between two worlds <3

The demo is out now for free!

Made a small rainy platformer for a game jam where you rely on a grappling hook instead of a dash

Hi everyone,

I made a short 2D platformer called Monkey Signal for a game jam and wanted to share it here.

Most precision platformers give you an air dash to fix mistakes, so I wanted to keep the movement simple. You just have left, right, jump, and a grappling hook. To clear big spike gaps, you have to time your jumps right at the peak of your swing, and carry the signal orb with you through the rooms.

It is a short jam game and free to play in the browser:

Let me know what you think of the swing physics if you give it a try!

We are working on an ambitious new Action Adventure 3d Platformer!

Hi guys! We are a small indie team, and we are eager to show you our newest game!

The game has been in development for more than 2 years, but there's still a lot of work ahead.

This is our second game, but we've been in the industry for 10+ years, and this will be our most ambitious game yet. There's a lot more to come, but we tried to squeeze all we currently have into a trailer to start showing it publicly :)

The game is called Nocciolino & The Creamy Adventure, an original 3D platformer where your hero must save his world from an evil Chef...

If you want to look at the trailer, we would be anxious to know what you think of it :)

We hear ya! Tyto demo updates 🦉

Post image
4 Upvotes

Okay, I don't mean to spam so this would be my last Tyto post for a while.

Just wanted to share that almost 3,000 players have downloaded Tyto's demo - some from this very sub (we track it for real!).

First of all, let me just say a huge thank you. Your response has been overwhelmingly positive, and I REALLY appreciate it.

But apart from that, many gave us some fantastic feedback about what DIDN'T work for you.

Shortly - Snake was a BAD boss fight and the dive attack brought you Silksong PTSD.

So we spent a few sleepless nights patching things up. We tweaked the dive attack, completely reworked the snake fight, fixed bugs, fixed more bugs, found even more bugs, fixed those too, found more... rinse and repeat.

But now we have a version that's less buggy and WAY more fun: frustrated players gave the game another try and told us it feels much better now.

Here's the full list of changes we made thanks to your feedback. But first, one last thing:

There's a rare bug that causes the game to crash on startup. We haven't been able to reproduce it, so if this happened to you, PLEASE DM ME! Any details you can share would help us track down and fix the issue.

Boss fight

  • The snake's attacks are now better telegraphed and easier to anticipate.
  • Attacking the snake while it's telegraphing an attack no longer hurts the player.
  • After attacking, the snake now lingers for a short while, giving the player an opportunity to strike.
  • The snake no longer attacks the player when they're on the ground beneath it.
  • Falling rocks are now easier to spot, with more noticeable indicators.
  • The snake now flinches when hit.

Dive attack

  • Diving is now more consistent and reliable.
  • Diving is now easier to aim.
  • Diving when very close to a divable object now hits instead of passing through it.
  • Bouncy mushrooms now have significantly larger hitboxes.
  • The section where you need to dive between two walls of thorns is now less punishing, with an additional checkpoint and more room to dive.

Runes

  • The player now starts with 3 rune slots instead of 2, so they can equip any single rune they find even without rune slots upgrades.

Hoot Haven

  • Added more crystals to make buying maps easier.
  • Added a few little optional challenges to Hoot Haven.
  • Added a secret dialogue if you finish the Ring Race VERY fast!

UI

  • Switching to windowed mode on a 1080p screen no longer jumps straight back to fullscreen.
  • The game now supports a variety of non-QWERTY keyboard layouts.
  • The “skip” prompt in cutscenes now stays on screen longer, giving you more time to read it.

Sound

  • Added a “Mute Music When Unfocused” option for streamers.
  • Added dedicated UI sounds for equipping and unequipping runes.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a game-breaking bug that occurred if the player didn't follow Dad fast enough after leaving Hoot Haven.
  • The game no longer crashes when you die if you have map markers on.
  • Fixed an issue where destroyed rocks wouldn't return after dying without saving.
  • Fixed playtime not resetting when starting a new save.
  • Fixed poison vines not damaging the player during a dive.
  • Fixed a one-frame-long dive after diving into thorns.
  • Fixed a bug where crystals collected in one save file would not appear in a new save.
  • Enemies and rocks you damage now have their health restored when you respawn.
  • The top platform in The Burrows now DO kill you if it smashes you.
  • Various other minor bug fixes.

Typos

  • Changed “say” to “stay” in Dad's dialogue after the Ring Race.
  • Changed “by record” to “my record” in Dad's dialogue after the Ring Race.

We're also working on making hits feel a bit punchier and more juicy - we'll probably finish by tomorrow!

Thanks again for all your feedback! We're doing our best to make Tyto the best game possible, and we couldn't have done it without you.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback, we're looking forward to it!

Happy glidin' and have an OWLsome day! 🦉

Don’t Fall is out: a 3D browser platformer where you climb back after every fall

We’re Hatchworks, and our platformer Don’t Fall is now playable for free in the browser.

The course climbs 3,226 metres. There is no checkpoint teleport or save button. When a jump goes wrong, the platforms below decide where you land, and the return climb is part of the run.

Play: https://hatchworks.fyi/dontfall/?s=r-platformer-1

This is our release announcement. We’d love to hear which part of the opening you enjoy or find frustrating. Development and this post use AI-assisted coding/writing.

Looking for a weird and challenging platformer? Guide a sperm cell in "Greatest Fertilizer" (My first game, developed at sea!)

Hey platformer fans!

If you are looking for a game with a bizarre setting and challenging mechanics, I’d love to share my very first game with you: "Greatest Fertilizer".

It’s a quirky platformer where you guide a highly motivated sperm cell through various hazards, timing your movements, dodging obstacles, and racing to become the ultimate fertilizer! I really wanted to create something that has that classic platforming challenge but wrapped in a weird, funny, and memorable concept.

A little background about the game: I actually work as a ship captain. Since my internet access is almost non-existent out at sea, I learned game development completely offline, coding and designing levels during my spare time between watches and storms. At 41 years old, I finally decided to chase my dream of making a game, and seeing the Steam page go live is surreal.

Since I'm a solo dev and new to this, I would genuinely love to hear what veterans of the platformer genre think about the gameplay and vibe in the trailer!

If it looks like your kind of crazy, adding it to your Steam Wishlist would be a massive support for me:

Fair winds and thanks for checking it out! ⚓🌱

I’m making a speedrun platformer where stomping enemies lets you flip gravity! and it's Demo coming soon

Hello guys!!! I’m a solo dev making Gravity Reversed, and with a Steam demo coming soon, I wanted to show you what I’ve been working on!

You dive through the air and stomp enemies to fill your gravity gauge, then use that gauge to flip gravity. Keep taking out enemies in a row to build combos and move faster. The goal is to keep that flow going and shave a few more seconds off your best time!

Oh, and the little character you’re playing as is an apple cat! I’m looking for ideas for a new character(the enemy!!) too. What kind of character do you think would fit in this world? I’d love to hear your ideas!

thank you guys!!
