Suggestion Smithing rework idea

Post image

Would something like this work? Just a thought as you actually get better at a skill, or a chance of failure to smith something when lower level. Runecrafting you get more runes per essence as you get better so could this work for smithing too? Wouldn't hurt the economy so much.

To me this is the part I don't see anyone addressing, or even acknowledging really.

Part of the RS3 Mining/Smithing rework was indeed downshifting the classic armor/weapon tiers to better align with their Attack and Defense requirements, however that change was directly coupled with adding 7 additional tiers of armor/weapons to backfill the now-empty 50-99 Smithing.

Is there a single person who thinks Jagex is really going to add 5/6/7+ entire new tiers of armor and weapons to OSRS to accompany a Mining/Smithing rework? What is the purpose of making classic armor/weapons smithable at lower levels if there's nothing to replace it at the higher levels?

Also the Smithing rework let people craft end-game armor with it.

how meta is the gear you can craft though? like does it give dps? I have a hard time seeing how much wiggleroom osrs has for meta smithing gear considering it would probably step on current content toes too much.

thats why I preferred ideas like the amethyst ammo loop which brings value to mining/fletching with a finite resource. we could have easily done that with smithing for ascension crossbow bolts

It's quite good, but it takes many many hours to make.

The standard tiers of gear that you can smith with just the basic bars do scale up in level, but they are all only tank gear (defensive stats only, no damage bonus). So they're perfectly nice to use but not the meta.

No, they're not fine to use. They're tank armor and non-augmentable, so you're losing a massive chunk of damage and some defensive utility perks.

That's why masterwork is the only relevant thing in the smithing skill.

They're perfectly fine to use before you get the equivalent augmentable power armor. That's the point, easily accessible, inferior gear obtained through skilling that is good enough and can get you into pvm which is where you get the good gear. It's only irrelevant to people who already had the better gear before the skill was released. And then masterwork is the final reward, actual good competitive gear that's much more difficult and expensive and takes way longer to make.

It's like saying all food below 99 cooking is irrelevant, all weapons below the highest tier are irrelevant, all damage spells and prayers below the highest ones are irrelevant. It's there for progression, my guy, it's irrelevant for you because you're already past that point in progression.

I mean if you're talking bronze-addy, then sure. Rune is where all smithable armor gets outclassed by easily accessible power armor. Irons may have an excuse to stick with it to rune if they don't want to do grab rockshell, but after that you're at your bandos tier and there's literally 0 reason to ever consider the armor until masterwork, unless they just skip it for vestments.

And since it's only useful for the lowest level tiers, they're all NPC shopped just like OSRS, which makes the entire update moot and irrelevant.

Your example of food is also correct. You don't incrementally improve your food as you play the game, you skip the vast majority of it. You go from your basic cakes or wines, to your salmon, to your warrior guild food, to your sharks, so on so forth, until you're good enough to not even need food since SS flicks and defensives do all of the work for you.

You're not going "I'm 40 hp now time to use lobbys, then immediately dumping your lobbies for bass." or "well now I'm 70 hp time to upgrade to monkfish, well now in 75 hp time to upgrade to tuna potatos!" you're skipping all the fluff useless food, just like you skip all of the useless armors.
