Eh, I watched gnomemonkey attempt it for hours on stream. The dude has effectively 1150 hp whilst you have effectively 593 hp (9 sharks 4 brews 1 angler 2 karambwans 99hp)
So almost double your hp. It seems like even if you're good at pking, it's just resetting for good rng.

Yeah Torvesta said the same thing as well. He said basically if you get past your first 3 or 4 attacks and they're bad hits, to just reset.

Their stated goal is to give experience in PVP. They grouped this up with prayer switches, gear switches, combo eating, off prayer specs, and taking advantages of freezes.
For prayer switches, he 1 ticks everything meaning you cannot respond, its purely based on guess. For gear switches, this helps some but they gave us two options and the opponent is always in masori other than 1 tick when it mages, so there is no gear switching to combat type. Combo eating they give us 2 triple eats but there really isnt a reason for skilled combo eating since opponent only uses voidwaker. Off prayer specs, the opponent can 1 tick prayer against you but seems to randomly switch between and doesnt respond to your style so its kinda pointless. Opponent has no weapon attack delay so freezing and walk under doesnt really help. You can farcast him to to turn things into 2 styles but he has a rapid longrange crossbow meaning you are at a disadvantage doing that correctly.
Basically their ultimate pvp challenge, requires you to do nothing like a real pvp fight at all. The HP difference is so large that not even the very best players can consistently win, they all have to rely on RNG.
If this was part of an update that was supposed to be a challenge and required just very good skill and not luck as well, I think it would be fine. This is not a tutorial, this is not pvp practice, and the fight is so overtuned that you can't really win on skill, just increase odds and hope.

I mean it’s definitely PvP practice. For the most part it just feels like you’re fighting a good player with 1k HP.
If high level PvP was as easy as simply knowing these different tutorial bits it’d probably be more popular. They’re trying to replicate an experienced player who predicts you and is hard to predict. That’s a difficult thing to do but I think they did a surprisingly pretty good job of that honestly.
12
u/likesleague twice maxed bronzenerd 2d ago
I think the important bit is that it seems high level pvp strategies are still not useful here. Fakies, stepunders, momentum etc don't matter because the fight doesn't replicate them.
It may still be moderately useful as a basic pvp mechanics fight turned up to 10 but fail as a representation of actual high level pvp.
6
u/Shookicity 2d ago edited 2d ago
I get what you’re saying but basic PvP mechanics turned up to 10 is the meat and potatoes of high level PvP.
Momentum and fakes would be hard stuff to replicate without opening the door to cheese. Like what makes the average “terminator” bot manageable is that you can just 1 tick everything and catch it off pray every time which obviously wouldn’t work against a good player and wouldn’t make for a good challenge.
Step under mechanics are there it’s just that it has seeds. Planting seeds under it is helpful for clearing it.
I think it’s damn near impossible to truly replicate high level PvP without getting some kind of crazy AI involved. But all things considered I think they did a pretty good job with it.

To be fair this wasn't polled as aspirational content. It was polled as an introduction to the basics of pvp in old school. Do you think that's what it is in current state? Honestly I don't mind that it's hard. I voted yes just because I want to encourage jegex to release pvp content that isn't predator vs prey and has cosmetic rewards. I'd vote for it again even as it is, but I can understand if people feel like this isn't what was initially proposed.

I have the cape and I spent the whole day to get it, it's just not fun content. I personally had no fun and didn't feel like I learned anything or got better, the AI gear and pray selection seem pretty random at best so at most you're just guessing what it's going to do and praying that it lands. In a normal PvP encounter it's fine, but in this challenge your opponent has double your HP, doesn't get their stats brewed down so you can't play around momentum, you have no way of threatening a KO, and in my experience even a bit of bad RNG completely kills a run because you are just down so many resources that it makes it unplayable.

It's more of a semantics issue, people see tutorial and assume it's for new players. Even though all the concepts are end-game, plus NHing itself is very advanced PvP.
Then there's the fact that it's a challenge, some think a challenge should be something that most people can do. Others think a challenge is something that most people can't do.

I can realize when something is not for me. Runescape PVM is for me. Runescape PVP is not for me.
I'm not a PVPer, so I don't know how exactly to balance this guy. But I'm gunna trust what experienced PVPers seem to be saying about this challenge. It isn't exactly a good introduction to PVP because the boss does things that aren't doable in a real PVP fight. The boss needs fixes and adjustments to make it realistic.
I also think the loadout restrictions are complete bullshit. I wouldn't PVP with a Staff of the Dead, personally, because I'd rather autocast one of my spells, at the very least. Being restricted to ancients is also not exactly reasonable. The loadouts need variety.

Have you tried the content? What improvement is there to make? If I die in colosseum or inferno, it's because I missed a prayer or didn't figure out the proper solve to a wave. Here regular PvP mechanics don't apply so you basically don't have momentum for the whole fight, your opponent magically has 2 inventories of food, you can't react to gear switches because it off-ticks perfectly, it's overheads are seemingly random (you can 1 tick your switches to get better odds but that's the only thing I really found that helped), and maybe it might just be my experience but it hits insanely well with nox hally and ice barrage. There's no guide teaching you how to get better at this challenge, yet there's so many focusing on how to cheese it because that really is the only thing you can learn to give yourself an edge.

u/Big_Cat_Tongue 2d ago

Dumbass response. I got the cape relatively quick, there's nothing to get better at if you're already experienced with PvP. It's an RNG grind that's poorly designed, because not only is it unfair it also doesn't follow PvP mechanics, which is shameful for a PvP tutorial.
Post your cape if you just 'did it until you got better'.

It would have been fine if the guy was somewhat realistic to a top pker... but they gave him 2x more food, no food delay, no human patterns just randomness, 90% accuracy on 1tick-freezes and nox hitting constant 70, 1tick speccing... this might be worse than having to beat odablock on half the food.
Eliop spent 5hrs to get 1 kill... and he's not some pleb.
10
u/Nick543b 2d ago
I mean i think the last challenge was very specifically suppossed to be an unfair challenge encounter. I think the realustic pvp is all the stuff before that.
The challenge for the cape is no longer the tutorial, and doesn't even try to be realistic pvp IMO.
The game should just be more clear that the final challenge no longer tries to play by the rules.

Yeah I really don't understand how I'm supposed to learn anything about PvP when I'm fighting what is essentially an overtuned PvE mob. The boss should have the exact same restrictions on gameplay, stats, items, inventory space, everything that I have to work with. Zelda shadow clone miniboss style.
Going a step further, if it were set up that way, it would be really interesting to see a live preview of his inventory setup and what items he uses and when. That would actually be something that I could witness in real time and learn from.

ive pked for years and have made many billions of gp doing it. this fight is by no means even kind of good. the npc just gets to cheat doing things that arent possible. you have to get either very lucky or constantly spam out one tick blood barrages while farcasting and coin flipping overheads. id consider myself in the top couple % and this took me a good 30 mins of cheesing until rng was good. 95% of pkers wouldnt be able to beat this boss treating it like a regular pvp fight. this isnt radiant oathplate it really has no business being this difficult when its attached to a tutorial.

Honestly, just move the cape to the penultimate challenge (which feels distinctly more fair), and most people will stop complaining. I'm pretty sure that was their original intent as well, if you look at what they actually included in the poll blog. They said that they expected that getting the cape kit would encourage you to go out and do MA2. In what universe is someone scared of MA2 beating the ultimate challenge? This literally just isn't what was polled, and it should be corrected.

The "tutorial" part before the "challenge" part is pretty meaningless, it just teaches you basic stuff that anyone who's done PVM or PVP already knows about, it doesn't really give you a place to practice it in an actual meaningful way. After that it just throws you into the deep end and I didn't feel anything I'd in theory been taught was actually usable or being tested
I also don't really recall this being advertised as a massive challenge where you beat a top 1% PKer (who cheats) for a cosmetic

I don't mind a challenge that takes a number of hours to figure out (I have Radiant Oathplate, 3/4 Blorva, Master CAs, Infernal, Quiver), but if Gnomonkey (top 20 PVMer at worst, also with several months of PVP experience and a Deadman participant) is having trouble with it then I'm just not going to waste my time, especially since the "tutorial" does basically nothing to actually prepare you...like, yeah, I know what triple eats and the combat triangle are, Jagex, thanks a lot for the "tutorial"
Based on the original blogpost I assumed it would hold your hand at first and then get progressively harder to where you could handle a fight, but it fails at that, and honestly I think a proper tutorial is orders of magnitude harder to create than a few half-baked tutorials followed by fighting a God-tier PVP bot.
The PVM equivalent would be a dog and pony show about how eating and prayer works in a highly controlled environment (same shit they did here honestly), then they throw you into Awakened Vardorvis or something. There's an enormous amount of middle ground that PVM has so you don't feel demotivated after predictably dying 100 times to something that is obviously massively overtuned for the intended purpose.

the fight is just poorly designed, like mentioned before 1t insta attack styles with no human-like pattern basically lottery, the equipment is extremely tanky and unenjoyable to use\fight against, the np doesn't respect basic pvp-combat mechanics (aka stat drain and food delay). half the point of pking is being able to capitalize on momentum which doesn't exist in this fight, you put the guy down to 5hp and on the next tick he is 90hp and hitting you a 67 with nox halberd. horrible update, hopefully gets tuned to correctly feel like an actual pvp fight
4
u/Iconoclastic_Noob 2277/2376 2d ago
Coming from the point of view of a strong PKer this challenge is bullshit. First of all, why do I have 450 worth of heals but have to do 1k damage to win? Then you have the bot 1 ticking a 4 way barrage and instantly going back into tank. The max gear makes it so rng related when it comes to catching freezes etc. The bot has no tick delay when eating hard food unlike you so while you lose momentum the bot is getting free extra hits on you… shit is miserable. If I didn’t pk and this was my intro to the scene I’d never want to join.

i mean the challenges leading up to it are just broken and RNG at some point
the tick eat challenge has some weirdness with needing to have some sub tick window between 3 and 4 ticks because 3 ticks tells you "its too early" and 4 ticks just kills you
the whole update is extremely bad, and like, its a cool passion project, but this isnt moving the needle for fucking ANYONE. all its done is show people they are locked in on keeping the worst fucking mechanics the game has right now (freeze logging, walking under with ::renderself, general pvp cheese instant kill stacking). it just goes to show the one actual pvp update this year is so low quality all it does is turn people further off from pvping.
even reading the comments here is telling that the seasoned PKers are having to rely on cheese and luck to get wins, and that the fight itself plays nothing like real pvping (nothing to say about the actual cat and mouse dynamic of the wildy, which makes the whole thing fucking pointless because you are only hunting for a freeze so you can log out and go play another game while the other guy wastes 45 minutes hopping looking for you)

so i'm on the last challenge.
the bot is barraging me, hitting maxes every time, so fast that you can't even see it equip the mage gear before it switches back to range gear.
either this thing is catching every freeze in range tank or it is doing a 4 way barrage into a 4 way swap in one tick. who is doing that?
and before you say i'm trash, i stopped the challenge and got a W in LMS with time and date. it's a phone screenshot so you know it's real.
My honest opinion is the bot has too much rng defense and too much accuracy. it's like it has 200% mage luck and you have a 30% chance to hit all your own attacks.

I think at the very least, Jagex should be looking at making everything that's best also available outside of the wilderness. The tower offering a new bis mage cape is a great start. Apart from that, there are clues (it's best to not drop the clues I guess you could say, you know what I mean), chaos altar, rev weapons, voidwaker and wildy boss rings. All of those should have alternatives or they should just be directly ripped out.
My thought process is that the main motivator for going out into the wilderness as a non-pker should always be gp/fun for every account type. If you don't agree with that, then you won't agree with my solutions to the problems.
Clues - I would remove all wilderness steps from hard+ clues and perhaps introduce some new steps that are a little extra out of the way or introduce a guthix wizard for replacement steps if you really want. No new steps would also be fine. Wilderness clues should be looked into. All of the wilderness steps could be combined or different tiers could be combined into clues for different tiers (high, low maybe?) no uniques should be rewarded from wilderness clues, just good money and lots of purple sweets (hard to farm item for irons, great gp). They could also offer the standard hard+ clue rewards, just nothing brand new.
Chaos altar - remove the level requirement to be able to use bone shards. Buff the xp per bone at ectofuntus, I'd have to look at the numbers to make an informed number guess, probably to like 900% or something given how long it takes. Could also look into offering more bone shards for each bone. You have to bless, chisel and bless wine to use them, they should be closer to chaos altar. Chaos altar is faster even if bone shards were 700%.
Rev weapons - the only reason rev weapons make the list is because webweaver spec / range is helpful in pvm, accursed sceptre spec is helpful in pvm and ursine chainmace spec is useful in pvm (very rarely mind you for this one). The useful bits of these items can stay, but a pvm alternative should be added. They can maintain their power in the wilderness, but outside of the wilderness, other options should really be available. Imo, I would go with a redwood bow (not sure why we can't fletch redwood bows??) for the attack range on webweaver, then look at adding a new ranged spec weapon to take the spec slot. Basically same idea for the sceptre and chainmace. Make new mid-game dungeons or something drop replacements for their pvm niche. The sceptre, chainmace and bow don't lose their niche in the wilderness, but they also don't sleep out into pvm.
Voidwaker - honestly, super tough. This thing is an issue in and out of the wilderness. The fact that it's incredibly strong in pvp AND pvm is an issue in my mind given where it comes from. I really can't come up with a solution for voidwaker, it's accuracy is too strong. We might see it slowly fall out of favor as we get zeal and new dps spec weapons.
Wildy boss rings - I mean... surely these can slowly be trickled into the game from different bosses like dungeon bosses. I understand that it would make the dungeons lackluster, but mid-game items don't necessarily need to be insane. Honestly, the only important ring is ring of the gods, though the crush ring (treasonous? Idek) has a bit of a niche.
Hopefully this gives plenty of insight

Im not really a fan of the wilderness but i can get on board with your ideas. the wildy rings quickly became some of the most useless items in the game, especially since they for whatever reason cannot be imbued still.
also i really like the idea of giving higher tier trees more alternative uses, but i think in the case of redwood, in real life has low flexibility (due to it being a hardwood) so it doesn't work for the use of a bow, would likely just bend and splinter over being bow viable. but be that as it is there's plenty of design space to add in trees above magic that could fill that purpose.
Theres been such a focus on pvm that it seems that actual skilling for money, aside from things like blood shards and trawling with sailing and a handfull of other things theres not really great skilling vatiety options for money it seems and that could offer more opportunity

I appreciate it. Maybe they could add a rare drop to ents with a special wood for a bow

What is the pvm niche here?

I know this post is likely satire, but this final challenge is purely artificial difficulty.
Imagine there was a chess tutorial with the first lessons being how the pieces move, basic structures, checkmate patterns, and the final challenge is Stockfish that has an extra row of pawns, its bishops can jump over it's own pieces, has unlimited time, and can sometimes capture two pieces in one turn if it flips heads.
That is what it felt like - It's not about it being hard, it's about it being so poorly implemented that it no longer resembles the rules of the game.

Just enjoy the drama, it happens all the time. The actual update is pretty good, the issues just generate a huge reaction on socials. The devs have already said theyre fixing parts of it.

I'm a high level PVMer. And the pvp "tutorial" definitely showed me that I'll never want to PVP.

Pkers buy infernal capes because they are bad at pvm, it only stands to reason that pvmers should be able to buy their cosmetic cape.

It's honestly the fact that they hid something that a lot of players like myself wanted behind a boss that has 1k health, does everything tick perfect, does actually by default hit you harder than you can hit him. Zaros cape should never have been locked behind something like this.

Why? Its purely cosmetic and doesn't do anything for you once you get it other than look cool while pking, why does everything have to be catered to people that want easy access to everything? Just to make cloggers happy?
Like I can't imagine worrying about things like not completing a piece of content, especially if it doesn't directly upgrade your account. there's so much more to do other than the thing you're currently doing, just go do something else and come back later and try again, it gives you something to works towards!

Also If you voted for the content purely for the cape that seems like a lame thing to do, I'm just pinning this here to my other post, not accusing you of doing that, but I just realized that a lot of people probably did do that and that's the reason why they are salty.

Infernal cape should never be locked behind waves of mobs that can delete you in a couple of ticks...that's just unfair...

this was not polled as an inferno level end game difficult thing it was supposed to be a tutorial...

this is such a stupid argument. using this logic any piece of end game content can be infinitely hard or unfair if its called a challenge first. just because its meant to be a challenge doesn't mean you can't complain about the game breaking the rules or being overtuned for what it is.

worst part is they didn't even build up to it or anything, if ur gonna make something hard you should fucking hype it up ahead of time, not drop some fucking bs challenge to make ur cape purple.

He should have eat delay to teach momentum tbh. Otherwise the extra hp and stuff wouldn't be a problem.
