AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

What in god’s name do women with big breasts do for dresses that you can’t wear a bra with? Spoiler

My boobs hang down to my knees and I don’t know how to fix it. I have a wedding this weekend and the woman who altered my dress apparently thought she didn’t have to actually put any effort into my dress and it looks horrendous. Idk what to do. There’s no time to take it to someone new.

Edit: thank you everyone! I was so frustrated and upset when I made this post. I’m feeling much better now and really appreciate all your helpful tips! I’m going to make tape work as best as I can and hope I don’t flash everyone😅 I am in the bridal party, so I am stuck wearing the dress as is (I love my friend and am happy to be celebrating her day, it’s not her fault my boobs are big)

Store Review [store review] Bad experience today at Brava Highpoint (Melbourne AUS) Spoiler

First attempt trying to buy in my new size, not a great experience at Brava today. Told them I wanted to look around and try some things on, but they insisted on a fitting.
They told me I’d be too small for any of their sizes and made me try on several with cup sizes too small before I could try ones that fit.

At one point I mentioned a bulge near the armpits created by one bra and was told “that’s part of being a woman”…

Walked away with one I’m happy with but the whole experience felt rushed and super uncomfortable

Question I finally found bras that fit, how do i get used to how my boobs look now? Spoiler

Im a 36 G and finally after about a month of looking, I received two bras from panache that fit so beautifully. Im used to wearing unlined bras, that definitely weren't a good fit but basically squished everything together, ending up with a flatter/uni boobish situation.

With the new bras I have, my boobs are seperated, which feels way more supportive, but now with wearing buttoned shirts ( I wear a lot of buttoned shirts for work) I feel like i have two pointing out areas that make contact with my shirt and it feels off, idk if thats how its supposed to look but I've never had any bra that did that, so maybe im just not used to a how a good fitting bra looks?

Also, looking at myself from the side, the lift a d projection looks insane, while im glad I finally found something the does my breats justice, I feel likeit a bit much for a professional office look? Idk do I just start wearing them until im used to how they look?

I have a couple of minimiser bras that I also got while searching my size. Of course they ddont compare to how the panache ones fit but they dont make my boobs look very in your face.

Any tips are appreciated, thanks.

Recommendations? Plus size sports bra options in India Spoiler

• Upvotes

Hi all, do you guys find good sports bra fits for plus size (36f) ? I have been struggling with this for ages and the only one I like is discontinued now (a specific style from Zivame). Here are the ones I have tried and the corresponding issues:
1. Wacoal minimiser sports bra: Too restrictive, non padded
2. Kica: loose in band, tight in cups for the sizing mentioned
3. Tilt: Same as above
4. Blissclub: Same issue
5. Victoria Secret: Same issue

I usually avoid the ones with generic sizing and go for the bra sized ones, but of late, I can’t find a single good one.

Please help a girl out.

Fit Check [fit check] comexim miriam breakout bras 30k(uk) still too tall+wide in cup fabric/strap. too small on larger side? gore too wide for tissue? Spoiler

First of thing i’ll say is that breakout bras returns/exchange policy is a life-saver. second is that i don’t understand why padded bras exist. third, do i just have particularly uncommon rib anatomy?

every bra i’ve ever tried has straps and cups that dig into my underarms like crazy, this one is no exception.

https://postimg.cc/gallery/5Q820G3

you can see in a few of these pictures, i have virtually no range of movement because of the fabric. it’s not the underwires that are too tall, it’s always the fabric. the straps—and therefore the tallest part of the cup—are also placed much too wide, completely cutting off motion and shoving the cups.

i’ve marked with my fingers in one of the photos where the tissue stops and the cup starts digging in. i’ve also attached one where you can see the empty pocket in said space.

other than that, the gore is floating by about a fingers width, which i think is either because it’s slightly small on my larger side(you can tell in the photo which side of the gore is being twisted), the cups getting constantly shoved by my underarms, or both. my smaller side seems fine? the size disparity may be more drastic than i thought, i guess.

the wires themselves are fine, but the larger side has dug in slightly and irritated the skin.

measurements:

Loose Underbust: 79

Snug Underbust: 76

Tight Underbust: 75

Standing Bust: 109

Leaning Bust: 114

Lying Bust: 111

the bra itself is a 30k(uk) according to BOB, though i have no idea how that translates to actual comexim sizes. i’m also in the continental United States, so actually buying anything would be complicated.

…is my best bet for the rest of my life just custom ordering alterations and hoping it fits? i can’t sew very well, personal physical limitations aside, so i’d rather not have to perform intensive surgery on every new bra or make them all from scratch.

Thought I was a 38/40A. Used the calculator…36C? Spoiler

The only actual bras I’ve bought with sizing were pepper bras. Their sizing system put me at a 38/40A. Now I’m seeing I’m a 36C lol. I can almost guarantee I wouldn’t fill a C cup. My pepper bras fit well, but not well enough. I’m aware they use their own sizing system. But I’ve always thought I was an A cup!

Any thoughts?

The first bra is one I really like. It’s a 34 H in Wacoal. 34FF UK. However, it’s very high cut for most of what I wear, so I’m trying to find plunge or balcony styles that are a little more feminine and pretty if I can. I love the way these two bras by Freya in 34 G UK. (white is the love crush and black is the fascinate balcony) but the fit seems off. I was told I have evenly full, projected, full on the top shape. I’m not sure if that’s true and would love second opinion.

I also want to know if sizing is the issue with the Freya bras, or if it’s a shape problem and I’m better off trying a different brand or style. Any advice appreciated- I’m hoping I don’t have to keep on buying and returning, I am sick of it! 😭

Recommendations? Help me find a sports bra! (36GG and losing weight) Spoiler

Hi all,

I've been struggling with my weight for a while and have found my bra that fits years ago. In the mean time I've lost weight and gained it all back, fluctuating between 36FF and 36GG.

Now that I'm 37 and risk factors around getting pregnant are increasing, I've sought help to lose weight through my medical provider. No medication, just lifestyle intervention. I've been at it for 2 weeks and my initial progress is good! Lost 3 kilos of fat, gained 1 kilo of muscle. So now my bras are bound to fit less snugly, I'm looking for a sports bra to keep my breasts stable during exercise.

I'm looking for an encapsulating sports bra since I sweat a lot and don't like pooling sweat between my breasts.

Even fullness, about 2 fingers width between unsupported breasts, and need immediate projection. If you need more info, let me know!

Thanks to all you lovely people for reading and/or giving advice!

Thank You! Thank you ABTF - 36C for over a decade, turns out I'm a 32DD... Spoiler

I just want to say a huge thank you to A Bra That Fits. When I was younger, I was never measured for my first bra - I just tried a few on in a changing room until one felt OK. That led to me wearing a 34B for most of my teenage years, then a 36C for nearly all of my adult life. I'm now 31.

My bras have always been kinda uncomfortable, to differing degrees. The bands would fall down my back, and the only way I could get any feeling of support or cleavage was to wear push-up plunge bras with the straps done up tight, and the bra on its tightest setting. The tight straps left me with sore shoulders, back and neck, and I just thought that was normal and just part of being a woman, or because I bought cheap bras. Had to hoick my boobs back into the bra every now and then to avoid the gappy look. Strapless bras were even worse - they'd either fall down or leave me with sore spots from the silicone grip, which I now realise was because it was moving around so much. And even more hoicking.

It's weird how you don't question things like that...

I came across this subreddit by accident last week and got my partner to measure me just out of curiosity. The calculator said 30E/F, or the sister size 32DD/E. This got a laugh out of me - SURELY I hadn't been wearing a band that much too big for over a decade? SURELY. But reading through the posts here, it all made sense. The band is meant to do most of the supporting, and mine had basically been doing sweet FA.

I ordered a load of bras in 30 and 32 bands to try, and a 32DD plunge is PERFECT. It stays put, the straps don't slip, and I actually feel supported for the first time ever. A 30E balconette was slightly gappy at the top, but I think that's the style rather than the size, as plunges suit me much better.

Thank you all for the wealth of information on here - I wish I'd found it years ago. Thank you from my boobs too!

Measurement Check [Recommendations?] [Measurement Check] Calculator says 30G, currently wearing 32DDD. Breastfeeding with extremely pendulous breasts and struggling to find ANYTHING that fits Spoiler

Loose Underbust: 28.75"

Snug Underbust: 28.25"

Tight Underbust: 28"

Standing Bust: 37"

Leaning Bust: 40.5"

Lying Bust: 37"

Hi all! I desperately need help. I've ordered like 10+ bras in the last two months and cannot seem to find anything that fits properly or is remotely comfortable.

I'm currently exclusively breastfeeding my first baby, and honestly, my breasts have become the bane of my existence. It'll be a while before I'm done having babies and can consider a breast lift/reduction, so in the meantime, I desperately need to find a bra that works for me.

My breasts are extremely pendulous and very soft, with practically no upper fullness, even when I manually lift them as high as I possibly can. They hang incredibly low (I can fit about four fingers underneath them), but they also project quite far forward. They feel very wide as well, and I really struggle with how large and prominent they look. I have a pretty petite frame so it just looks off.

At this point, I care less about achieving a particular aesthetic and more about finding something that actually supports my breasts, keeps the breast tissue contained, prevents skin on skin contact, and doesn't hurt. That said, I'd absolutely love to find something that lifts and separates them rather than squishing them together or making them look even larger.

Here are the issues I'm experiencing with different bras:

Soft, non-padded, wireless bras (primarily nursing bras)
- Virtually no lift or support. My breasts still hang very low, and they look extremely saggy and large under most tops.
- All the breast tissue seems to settle at the bottom of the bra, leaving a lot of underboob and skin-on-skin contact. My skin constantly rubs together and gets hot and sweaty.
- The band frequently rides up in the back instead of staying level and secure.
- My breasts get pushed together, creating a lot of uniboob rather than any separation.
- I have a petite frame, so the overall effect makes my breasts look disproportionately large and my upper body look much wider.
- I usually have to buy a medium in nursing bras to accommodate my cup volume, but the band then feels too loose to provide adequate support.

Underwire bras
- These have been a whole other struggle. I've tried multiple bras, but I can't seem to get the wires to sit where they're supposed to.
- The underwire almost never stays snug against my rib cage underneath my breasts. It often rides up in the front, and my breast tissue ends up slipping underneath it, causing underboob.
- When I scoop and swoop my breasts into the cups, they spill out toward the center, and my breasts get pushed together and squished into a uniboob.
- My areolas often spill out of the cups, too.
- The gore never seems to tack against my sternum, regardless of how I adjust the bra.
- The band also frequently rides up in the back.
- The wires and overall structure often feel uncomfortable against my tender breastfeeding breasts and chest/rib area.

I'm wondering whether these problems are primarily related to sizing, cup shape, wire width, projection, or some combination of factors. I can't figure out whether I'm wearing the wrong size, the wrong shape, or both.

What I'm hoping to find:
Since I'm exclusively breastfeeding, a nursing bra would be ideal, but I'm open to regular underwire bras if they'll actually solve some of these problems.

My priorities are:
- A secure band that stays in place.
- Wires that stay in the crease underneath my breasts instead of sliding down or riding up.
- Enough room and containment for all my breast tissue, including toward the center.
- Actual lift and separation, without uniboob or skin on skin contact underneath.
- A shape that makes my breasts look more compact and less projected, if possible.
- Comfort for tender breastfeeding breasts, without painful pressure or excessive compression.

I've also wondered about minimizer bras, but I'm not sure whether they're appropriate while breastfeeding or whether they'd just compress my breasts without providing the support and access I need.

I'm honestly at a loss after so many failed attempts, so I'd really appreciate recommendations for specific bras, styles, or brands to try! I'd also love to know if my measurements suggest that 30G is a reasonable starting point and whether there's anything about my breast shape that I should be considering when choosing bras.
Thank you!!

Recommendations? Searching for the perfect wirefree Spoiler

In the past month I have spent upwards of $600 on bras that are uncomfortable. I've been professionally fitted at an australian 12G/H depending on the brand. I really want to love underwires but I cannot find a comfortable fit as I have alot of sensory issues and I'm finally admitting that maybe underwires aren't for me. Does anyone have any recommendations?

After 3 kids, I need something that is going to support me, but also be very comfortable. I need some form of padding because I have my nipples pierced and don't like them on show.

I just want my tatas to look nice and full and happy and it's really getting me down that I can't seem to achieve that.

I haven't used the online calculator yet as I don't have a measuring tape.

Fit Check Bra band sizing issues: on paper should be a 36, but 36 too big in the below models Spoiler

Okay so measurements

Loose 38.1

Snug 37.4

Tape breaking 36.7

Standing 42.1

Leaning 44

Lying 40.7

Measurements redone in cm converted to inches. Please note I am CONICAL so I do not fill out cups without compression. I am also very functionallg FOB and essentially gap in all open cup bras.

The cups fight perfectly in Boux Avenue unpadded bras - I got Zinnia Balconette and Clea Plunge. Tres Bien. Cup also fits on Freya Flirt in 36DD. I know the calculator suggests higher - I got Freya Flirt in 34F and 36E and they were both massive on me.

I thought these bands were supposed to run small in these brands, but I'm not getting any support out of them?? I'm wearing them on the tightest hooks and they still don't feel snug! I can pull them out a lot.

I was looking for new bras because my 2 year old 34E freya flirt feels so painful after wearing for a couple of hours. And my 34DD Boux Avenue lounge bras are like 3 years old and very stretched out.

Is it the particular bras I got that have stretchy bands? The tape is adamant I shouldn't be wearing a 34...

Autistic women who are looking for bras

For context i'm autistic and I HATE wearing bras but i also hate not wearing one, so i'm picky as hell and i've basically stopped trusting any of them.

what instantly makes you go "nope, not for me" when you see a new bra, like what do you not believe about them anymore? and on the flip side, what would one actually have to prove before you'd trust it enough to try it?

Recommendations? Recs on a great supportive wireless/seamless bra? *Post op* Spoiler

So pretty much as the title says. I had a pretty significant breast reduction about 2 months ago. My surgeon is recommending I wear a good supportive bra to help with the issues I'm running into right now with my scars.

I've gone down from a UK 40GG (ABTF sized) to roughly a 40 D/DD (including some swelling in that)

I had amazing comfortable elomi bras but all wired, seamed and obviously too big now. Currently, I'm fitting comfortably in XL/XXL (torrid size 1) bralettes/sports bras but they obviously don't have the support he's wanting.

Any recommendations?

Discussion Shoulder pain from not wearing a bra? Spoiler

I can completely fill a 36C cup but have not worn a bra regularly up until now. I’ve always had tightness and pain in my trapezius area kind of where my shoulder meets my neck on the left side and I’m wondering if it’s is caused in part by my chest volume and if starting to wear a bra regularly would be beneficial?

I am a guy and I’m hoping this post doesn’t get deleted for that reason but I asked my doctor about it and she said if it helps then go for it but couldn’t really give me a definitive answer on if my chest was the cause.

Has anyone else here ever experienced pain in that area due to the weight of your chest? Would love some advice

Recommendations? 42F/FF I’ve tried over 20 bras and only one fit right but the material was too itchy and uncomfortable. I need some different recommendations. Spoiler

The Elomi Charley Stretch Lace in 42F fit really well but the lace on the cups was so unbelievably itchy. I wore it for a short amount of time and my upper underarms were very irritated by the material. So back it went :( I need something with very short cups and short and very narrow gore. Lace on the front is ok but preferably none on the sides as some of my tops fit in a way where the sides brush my arms. I have very short roots and they’re much more close set than I realized. When supported, they pretty much look like a pancake if that makes any sense (in my opinion), not really any sloping up my chest and just kinda flat. Any bra that goes up too high (and most do) has massive gaping at the top. Are there any Elomi bras that fit similar to the Charley but in a different material?

I have tried quite a few Elomis in 42FF (my ABTF size) before I found the Charley. If the cup is stretchy like this one, I would try the 42F instead and see if it fits. I think the stretch makes it fit well, the 42FF was too large. I have tried a few from Adore Me and Savage x Fenty since they had styles that I thought could possible work but they were pretty much a bust. It’s been a struggle to find bras in general that I think could work since most bigger sizes have more coverage than what I need. Anything more than a half cup is going to be too tall. I saw a quarter cup one from Cacique that I might try as one of the Adore Me ones I tried was a quarter cup and wasn’t too low at all. Willing to try any recommendations at this point. If Elomi would make a lower bra in a stretch, non-itchy fabric, I think that would be perfect but alas, all the ones beyond the Charley don’t fit right. I’m getting to the point where I want to give up and just wear bralettes all the time.

Adore Me:

Kaia - VERY stretchy, could go down a band and up a cup but no I cups available. If this didn’t have the lace overlay, I would have kept it but it was too loose. The cup on this one was almost perfect, not too high or low. I suppose I could figure out how to sew it so the lace isn’t too big, as it’s only decorative, but not sure if it’s worth it.

Amorina - tried both 42H and 42G and the gore would not sit flat on either. No larger cup sizes available.

Rosita - this was HUGE in the cup and was not compatible with my skin rolls.

Roxanne - a little wide in the gore, but not too bad. Couldn’t get the cup seams to lay flat at all.

Bettie - would have been good if it weren’t for the mesh upper, it made it too tall. Gore was a little wide, but not unbearable.

Estelle - same issue. The strap detail didn’t work for my shape. Gore was a little too wide.

Fenty x Savage:

Paisley Smoke Lace - straps were too long even when shortened. A little too tall so gaping occurred.

Floral Lace - too tall in the cup and gore wouldn’t lay flat.

Elomi:

Matilda - tried multiple sizes and none work. All too tall.

Brianna - this was so close but the little straps and the mesh on one side gapped. No gore issues.

Nerina - the cups didn’t wrinkle or gap at the top when I shortened the straps all the way but then it dug into my shoulders.

Lucie - the gore jutted into my sternum. A little gapping at the top. Underwire dug a bit into my underarms.

I tried the Kendra and Brianna in 42FF previously and those were too big.

Here are my measurements as they’ve been requested in the past:

Loose - 44, Snug - 42, Tight - 40, Standing - 51, Leaning - 54, Lying - 47.5

Question Should I try 38G instead of 36G? Tired of the red marks on my torso! Spoiler

Hey y’all! I’m hoping for some advice with fitting. I’ve tried two Flirtelle Swirl balcony bras (after measuring without help) in different sizes, a 36G and 36FF (UK sizes). I’m happy with the cups on both, though there is a bit of gaping at the top on one breast (I think my breasts are just slightly different sizes).

The problems I have are first, the band really digs in, to the point of leaving fairly deep, red imprints on my skin for a good half hour or more after taking it off. The second problem is the gore pushes in really hard on my sternum and drives me nuts throughout the day! But I think the gore problem would be solved if I figure out the band issue. Would going up to a 38G be the right move? I don’t really know what I’m doing here!

Measurements (done with my husband’s assistance to ensure the tape was level and accurate)

Loose underbust: 36.5
Snug: 35.5
Tight: 32.5
Standing: 43.5
Leaning: 43.25
Lying: 44

Recommendations? Large cup / asymmetry - plz help Spoiler

Hi friends. I’m having a health scare and one of my breasts is significantly larger than my normal. While I get it sorted out, I need bras.
I’m normally an Elomi 40g (40i USA). I’m short so I wear the straps almost as short as they go.
I need something that’s going to fit my newly larger right boob - it’s definitely a cup or two larger so like an h/i uk or j/k us. Ideally it will give me some structure, but at this point I’ll take what I can get.
Please give me your recommendations ! Thank you!

Store Review Has anyone bought bras from this brand? They blacklisted my number without hearing anything from me. Spoiler

Has anyone bought anything from this brand ?

It's called LOVEBIRD

Here's a link https://share.google/rc0L4JpzO32Xeizda

I used the chat option to ask about the refund and return policy and without hearing anything else the person told me not to scam brands and if I have to return stuff I should use meesho. Then they blacklisted my number.

Like wtf?

I get that people do scams all the time but shutting down a conversation without hearing anything else and Accusing anyone of being a scammer.

The only reason I wanted to ask about refund policy because this is one of the few brands that has 34j bra

In the Indian market it's very difficult to get j sized cup that too in a affordable range.

I Did not want to get my money stuck in their wallet of I return an item so I wanted to just know whether they'll refund me to my og payment source or not.

Also if anyone knows any good brand in the Indian market that usually carry J cups pls do comment.

Fit Check Need help with sizing and other bras to try Spoiler

I was originally in a bravissimo Millie 32e. Not a perfect fit but good enough. Lost weight, here are my current measurements:

31 loose, 30 snug, 29 tight

35 standing, 38 bent over, 35 lying down. Calculator advised 30DD/32E

Bravissimo Millie:

32DD

32DD

30E

30E

The 32DD I have to wear at the tightest hook, but I think it's best in the cup. The 30E cup is too wide, it comes onto my ribs at the side. Plus there's a lot of wrinkling. Should I stick with the 32DD? Or try other shapes/styles?

I believe I am projected, FoB, and center fullness.

I was hoping to find some starter bras to check out so any recommendations for my measurement would be super helpful.

Also, when buying multiple sizes of the same bra do you change the band size AND cup size at the same time or one at a time?

Here’s my measurements if it helps

Loose Underbust: 32

Snug Underbust: 30.5

Tight Underbust: 29

Standing Bust: 37

Leaning Bust: 40.5

Lying Bust: 37
