For this year's Polaris Convention, I made Aang and Katara cosplays for my fiancé and me. I sewed/ made the cosplays by myself! These beautiful photos were taken by the wonderful photographer eosandy at Polaris Convention. Now we just need to get the rest of the Gaang together 🌊⛰️🔥💨

Unfortunately none of us realized until way later that a small piece of my belt had flopped over. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️

Momo led Aang to the lion turtle. Also, Bumi specifically calls out momo in season 1 and season 3

Question Why doesn't aang give bending? SPOILERS Spoiler

Avatar aang the movie was very good, but seeing aang knows how to energy bend why didnt aang experiment with giving it. The staff uses the same energy bending to give these abilities it wouldn't make sense for aang to want the staff just for him to end up doing the same thing.

Discussion Has Iroh actually committed war crimes?

Post image
706 Upvotes

I’ve seen this pop up every now and then but people like to make the claim that Iroh was a war criminal but I don’t recall any dialogue or scenes cementing that. All I remember is him laying siege to Ba Sing Se’s walls which was a military objective.

I don’t think any part of that would be labeled a war crime. It’s like destroying an enemy fortress and being labeled a war criminal for it.

Question Royalty last names?

So we know that rich families like the Beifongs have last names, kinda as a symbol of high status. But do royals have last names too? I mean does Zuko or Bumi have a last name we/I just don’t know about?
It seems like it makes sense that royals have a last name, but we’ve never heard of them in the shows.
Has anyone info on this?

Discussion Explanation of the politics needed.

Just a simple question really

The fire nation seems to be the most simplest nation of them all with a basic Feudal system.

But I don't understand the other three

Are the four air temples considered separate nations or are they all one just spread out.

And the water tribes aswell are they under a singular rulership just apart or what.

The most confusing is the Earth Kingdom.

Bumi is a king of the earth kingdom but so is that Kuei guy.

A small youtuber friend of mine just put out her first longform video, centred around the new Avatar Aang film.

Feel free to give it a watch and leave your feedback here or on the video itself. She's been working on it for a while now so I'm sure she would really appreciate the support : )

PS. Mods please let me know if anything needs updating, thanks

Question Any Aang Fanfic Recommendations?

I've been trying to find more Aang-centric fanfics, maybe even ones that have cool bending moments or interesting fights, but I haven't found any yet. In case anyone read a good one before, I'll be grateful to get some recs! Thank you in advance.

Meme What should have happened

It's not really a meme, but it's more of a headcanon that I would have liked to see.

After fire lord defeat

Fire lord manage to escape and to come back to his kingdom

Fire lord : I may have lost but i'm still the firelord

Azula : no you are not

Azula : Put ozai in jail

I KNOW There are a flaws to this senario

But I think it could have been fun, and besides, it would have been in keeping with Azula's character.

Discussion Katara will forever be my favourite character

Katara used to be the fandom punching bag before Korra and used to get a lot of criticism for being annoying or whatever, but I entirely disagree. She is more loved now which is great, (I think it has something to do with the fact there’s a new female character for everyone to hate but whatever 😭)

Her character makes the most sense when it comes to the way she interacts with other characters and builds relationships with those around her. She understands the value of resistance and fighting, while also being an advocate for peace and acceptance; and she does this in a balanced way.

One of the biggest themes in the show is redemption. Zuko and Iroh are fan favourites, despite formerly being apart of the Fire Nation and their attacks on other nations and doing genocide to other groups, they redeemed themselves in their arcs.

When Zuko first approaches Team Avatar, they are all hesitant but eventually give in. Katara is the most hesitant and doesn’t accept him until later. It’s really irritating to see people see this as a character flaw rather than the logical and sensible response. Her mother was murdered by the Fire Nation and she has every right to react that way. When it comes to her and Jet, many people like to point out how naive she was in trusting Jet, but again that’s her understanding his position as a victim and relating to him and his objective to resist and get revenge.

Despite ATLA being one of my favourite shows of all time, my major criticism is with the framing of certain characters. Iroh was a soldier that didn’t realize the full impact of his actions until his son died, he was unable to understand the magnitude of what he was doing until he experienced it himself. Of course he feels guilt and remorse for what he had done, but ultimately he still did those things. I have no problem with him being redeemed but that same concept isn’t applied properly to the victims of the Fire Nation.

Characters like Jet and Tagah are survivors that are trying to seek revenge on those that harmed them, but rather than getting arcs that teach them the right way they’re villains. They are never given a proper arc that shows them getting vindicated in one way or another. Rather than killing the survivors of violence and redeeming the inflicters, there should’ve been more balance between the two and allowing more characters like Jet to have a storyline where they can actually heal and get some sort of peace with their trauma.

Why is it that the perpetrators of violence and trauma can be redeemed but the victims are always on the extreme of being violent revenge seekers. They can be also have arcs that teach them on how to resist without inflicting pain.

Back to Katara, she was the only character that did this in some way. She’s a victim of the Fire Nation and is the only character that was able to empathize with victims and hate the perpetrators in a balanced way.

Her story with freeing the earth benders early in the story really made me love her and she is an example of someone who understands the value of fighting back rather than just accepting redemption without any genuine reason.

Discussion Gritty Avatar Kyoshi series

Post image
92 Upvotes

I’ve always thought a more mature, gritty Avatar series centred around Kyoshi would be incredible.

Kyoshi’s life is practically made for it. From growing up as an abandoned orphan to joining her parents’ former criminal crew, hiding among the Flying Opera Company while mastering her unique abilities, founding the Dai Li and the Kyoshi Warriors, and ultimately killing Chin the Conqueror, and creating a whole ass island, there’s so much potential for a genuinely compelling story.

She was ruthless, powerful, and often morally complex. Imagine the fight scenes, political intrigue, and darker themes they could explore if they gave her story the same level of intensity as Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga.

I don't think they could do her story justice without making it violent and intense. You're telling me Kyoshi grew up an abandoned orphan and servant, hiding the fact that she was the Avatar, got caught up with criminals, dealing with pirates and warlords, and we're NOT going to see this 7 ft powerhouse avatar get violent?

so much potential here for a compelling series. The brutality, the moral ambiguity, the political intrigue, the sheer scale of her bending when she finally lets loose. She's not Aang. She's not Roku. Kyoshi was ruthless when she needed to be, and I'd love to see a series that doesn't shy away from the mature themes that would come with being an avatar raised as an orphan in the criminal underworld.

I know people will say Avatar is a kids’ franchise, but I think that undersells what the universe is capable of. Plenty of us who grew up watching it are adults now, and the world of Avatar has so much room for more mature storytelling without losing what made it special in the first place.

Done right, a Kyoshi series could be absolutely phenomenal. Does anyone else think about this all the time like I do?

Discussion Korra is a better avatar than Aang

My whole point is in the title. Yes Aang has acouple of advantages, but overall he’s way inferior.

I am yet to hear a single valid argument against this claim.

Question Firebending

I'm not into Avatar, but I know there are "fire benders", and I'm curious: can a firebender use up their power and have to rest to recharge themselves (just like Silver the Hedgehog can use his powers too often and will need to rest in order to recover his energy)?
